What does the research say about advantages and disadvantages of distance

The researches show that online learning benefits are numerous. Instructors believed
that their students are forced to read more, to write more and better, to learn more on
their own, and to become problem solvers. They also believed students develop good
technology skills and learn time management and self-discipline skills.

Discussion threads and online assignments offer students opportunities to reflect on

the material and to revisit it more than they would in the seated course. In the research
of distance learning by article named Examining E-learning barriers there are a lot of
benefits if using distance learning tools. It is very easy to update the learning tools by
internet and computer. The author of the article says Although there has been some
growth in e-learning and distance education in Jordanian higher education institutions,
an assessment of the actual situation did not take place yet. Computer technology has
emerged very quickly in most Jordanian universities and community colleges; however,
managing online courses is still beyond the acceleration in this segment.

I can say that this university can adopt itself very quickly by looking at the article. Elise
Knebel the author of the article named The Use and Effect of Distance Education in
Healthcare: What Do We Know? says that Since the 1960s, distance education has
been used extensively around the world for the pre-service and in service training of
medical and allied health students and professionals. According to this article distance
learning was very important all the time for educators and students. The content of an
on-line course can be equal to that of a seated course and, in some cases, better.

Also, students who do not participate openly in a seated class may feel less inhibited
on the discussion board. Benefits to the teacher of the on-line course are not as
numerous as those to the students, but some benefits do exist. One benefit is the
flexibility and freedom from certain time constraints. For example, a teacher is free to
work on the on-line material on his own time and his own schedule just as the student
is. 'e may teach a class from anywhere that he finds an Internet connection. Nick R. says
that Only in a small group can a person develop properly. At school, students learn
how to make friends, be patient, get rid of disappointment, and especially to compete.
Competition between colleagues can be very stimulating and students will only benefit
from it. Online learning cannot offer human interaction.

Most of the instructors did not use a large number of videos, recorded presentations,
simulations, models, or any type of large files that would require someone on dial-up a
great deal of time to download. In fact, the very slow connection speed offered by dial-
up can make a very tedious task something as simple as navigating Blackboard to obtain
a daily announcement. The Internet infrastructure in rural areas poses serious problems
for on-line learning and teaching. As to the problems posed for dialup Internet access in
rural areas, seven of the nine participants believed dial-up posed major problems. For
example, a study conducted at Colorado State University determined that instructors of
on-line courses found them very satisfying, and they were likely to teach additional
courses on-line (Townley, 1997 and another study at California State University
at Northridge determined that on-line students tested 20% better across the board
than their counterparts who learned in the traditional classroom (CNET Staff,, 1997, n. p,). Specifically, in the California State University study, Jerald
Schutte, a Northridge statistics professor, randomly selected half of his statistics class to
be taught in the traditional classroom environment while the SUMMER 2008 remaining
students completed the class on-line+ 0n the on-line class, Schutte utilized on-line text
posting, e-mail, newsgroup postings, electronic assignments, and on-line classroom
chats (CNET Staff,, 1997).

Actually, when I think my education life, I am a traditional education person even I do

my master degree online. There are a lot of benefits of distance learning but
disadvantages of distance learning are more them its advantages. When you try to lead
a discussion in the class, it is very easy to control it.

Distance education brings a lot of opportunities for learners to manage social life and
educational areas. Learner has flexibility about place and time. You may have
communication from all over the word and you may have benefits from them
educationally. It fair way to have equal education for everybody. Students are doing
generally individual works and they have their own responsibilities.

In the discussion of classic education, you can control the temper of it and try to
make everyone join the discussion. You can see which student does not involve and
which one involves more. You cannot control discussions in online session very easily. If
a student doesnt want to join the discussion, you cannot see what is happening all the
time. Learner has opportunity to see her/his good sides and bad sides with the help of
this online courses or tele classes. For educator distance education is best way to teach
subject because they do not have any concern about time they may prepare lesson any
time and when they have internet they can put it online assignment. That will help them
about class and organizing.

I agree with some points of the author about advantages and disadvantages of online
learning. I am using the advantages of distance learning in my career already. In
conclusion, online learning should be seen as a complement and extension of classical
forms of learning. Not even the best online course can fully replace the personal contact
with a teacher, or the human relationships that develop in a group. So, traditional
classes shouldnt be replaced with online learning. I think that it is cheapest way too.
Because you do not have to go school you do not have to spend money for your meal,
transportation or residence.
