Theoreticallyspeaking,therecanbetwoscenariosasfollows.
Scenario1:StatorWindingofthemotorconcernedisStarConnectedandtheStarPointhasbeentaknoutthroughaBushing
andisavailableforinstallationofaCTthroughwhichtheStarPointcaneitherbegrounded.InsuchaScenariothreeCTs,each
ofproperratiosoastocorrespondtoatleast110%ofFullLoadCurrentshouldbeprovidedforphasesatoutgoingterminalsof
theSwitchgearandtheCTofsameRatioprovidedatMotorNeutralformeasurementofNeutralCurrenttoGround(whichwould
normallybeZero).Withsuch4CTsaRESTRICTEDEARTHFAULTSetupcanbecreatedsoastoprovidehighlysensitive
protectiontomotorstatorwindings.
Scenario2:All6TerminalsoftheMotorStatorWindingsareavailableoutsidethroughrespectiveBushing.InsuchScenario
conventionalDifferentialProtectionSetupcanbemade.

overcurrentlimits.
Thisstylewillallowthestartinginrushcurrentprofile,butoncethemotorisuptospeed,itcannoteasilydistinguishbetween
somepartialfault,whilethemotorisonlypartloaded.
Thisiswhereadifferentialprotectionrelaycancomeinhandy,becauseitcansenseifanypartialcurrentintooneendofa
windingdoesnotcomeoutoftheotherendofthatsamewinding.Itcouldhaveasmallproportiongoingtoframe,ortoanother
windingduetosomeinsulationbreakdowninthewinding.Inordertominimisedamagestothestatoriron,andmaybeevenlimit
thenumberofcoilsthatneedtobereplacedafterafault,itisofbenefittodetectthistypeoffaultasearlyaspossible.
Yourmentionofprotectionproblemsduringstartupisnoteasilysolvedthroughthedifferentialprotection,becauseitisdifficultto
keepthediff.prot.CTsfromsaturatingduringtheincreasedstartingcurrent,andespeciallyduringthefirstfewcycleswhilethe
wholemagneticsystemundergoesitsfirstunsymmetricstabilisation.
