Theoreticallyspeaking,therecanbetwoscenariosasfollows.
Scenario1:StatorWindingofthemotorconcernedisStarConnectedandtheStarPointhasbeentaknoutthroughaBushing
andisavailableforinstallationofaCTthroughwhichtheStarPointcaneitherbegrounded.InsuchaScenariothreeCTs,each
ofproperratiosoastocorrespondtoatleast110%ofFullLoadCurrentshouldbeprovidedforphasesatoutgoingterminalsof
theSwitchgearandtheCTofsameRatioprovidedatMotorNeutralformeasurementofNeutralCurrenttoGround(whichwould
normallybeZero).Withsuch4CTsaRESTRICTEDEARTHFAULTSetupcanbecreatedsoastoprovidehighlysensitive
protectiontomotorstatorwindings.
Scenario2:All6TerminalsoftheMotorStatorWindingsareavailableoutsidethroughrespectiveBushing.InsuchScenario
conventionalDifferentialProtectionSetupcanbemade.

However,inreallifeprovidinganyofthetwotypesofprotectionasdescribedabovewouldbehighlyunconventionaland
uneconomicalbasedonCost/BenefitRatio.

Themainquestionwillbetoconfiguretheprotectionrelayscorrectly,sincethedifferentburdenoneachsetofCTsperphasewill
bequitedifferent,duetothedifferenceincablelengths.ThestarpointCTsareuptoabout400mfromtheswitchgear,and
furthermore,theyareofdifferentmanufacture,butIhavebeenreassuredthatthesemodernrelayscanbesetuptocompensate
forallthesedifferences.


Ifthesemotorsweretobedeltaconnected,for6.6kV,thenthedifferentialprotectionwouldhavetoincludeaseparatesetofCTs
inthemainjunctionbox.ThereisnoreasonwhytheseCTscouldnotserveastheO/CCTs.

processtherelaywillfailtodetectanyshortcircuitcurrentwhichislessthantherelaysettingcurrent.Butthedifferential
protectionwilloperatewheneverthereisafaultinthe
regionbetweenthetwosetsofCT(lineside&neutralside)

overcurrentlimits.
Thisstylewillallowthestartinginrushcurrentprofile,butoncethemotorisuptospeed,itcannoteasilydistinguishbetween
somepartialfault,whilethemotorisonlypartloaded.
Thisiswhereadifferentialprotectionrelaycancomeinhandy,becauseitcansenseifanypartialcurrentintooneendofa
windingdoesnotcomeoutoftheotherendofthatsamewinding.Itcouldhaveasmallproportiongoingtoframe,ortoanother
windingduetosomeinsulationbreakdowninthewinding.Inordertominimisedamagestothestatoriron,andmaybeevenlimit
thenumberofcoilsthatneedtobereplacedafterafault,itisofbenefittodetectthistypeoffaultasearlyaspossible.
Yourmentionofprotectionproblemsduringstartupisnoteasilysolvedthroughthedifferentialprotection,becauseitisdifficultto
keepthediff.prot.CTsfromsaturatingduringtheincreasedstartingcurrent,andespeciallyduringthefirstfewcycleswhilethe
wholemagneticsystemundergoesitsfirstunsymmetricstabilisation.
