1. Purpose:

The Practical Strategies Guide was completed for the Final Course Project

assignment was completed for the course SPED 841: Advanced Methods and

Assessment: Learning Strategy and Content Mastery for Struggling Learners and

Students with High-Incidence Disabilities. The purpose of the Practical Strategies

Guide assignment was to present on specific evidence-based strategies that can be

used in a classroom to support learner variability.

2. Approach to assignment and revisions:

I chose the Practical Strategies Guide assignment for my final assignment for

this course because it was the option that was the most meaningful to me. It allowed

me to delve deeper into an area of interest to me. This course was difficult for me to

connect to because I did not work in an area of education that focused on a specific

subject area and that is what many of the assignments were focused on. With this

final course project, I was able to apply what I had learned in the class with what I

could use in my daily life with the children I work with.

The feedback that I received for this assignment was mostly positive with a

few areas that could be improved upon. One area that was noted was the connection

to students with disabilities. As mentioned in my introduction to the website, the

research supports the use of these strategies with children with autism as that was

my focus for students with disabilities for the project. All of these strategies are

common strategies used with students with disabilities in preschool programs. They

support learners of all ability levels.

3. How the assignment contributed to my development as a special educator:

This assignment was important to my development as a special educator

because it allowed me to focus on developing my knowledge base for working with

preschool students. I had just accepted the position of working in a preschool

program that was starting up. Throughout the year we have been working on

implementing many of these strategies into the preschool classroom. The most

obvious strategies that one would see in our classroom are those related to dramatic

play. We used play scripts and integration of writing and literacy into dramatic play.

We have been switching out our dramatic play center with each theme and I have

used the videos from this presentation to drive the use of play scripts in each of our

centers. Though creating the website took a lot of work, this was my favorite

assignment completed throughout the program.
