What is geography?

Geography is learning about the world around us, to study different places on the earth and other
cultures different to ours, geography helps us to explore our planet and study wonders around us.

Why is it important in todays world?


As the world we live in becomes more accessible from transport to connectivity, it is even more
important to understand the world now as we discover more and more of the planet. The planet is
becoming more interconnected increasing the need to understand geography.

Geographic Concepts
E - environment May be natural and/or cultural

P Perspective An individual or groups understanding of what is happening in their society or the


world around them

P Patterns Where interrelated ideas or objects form patterns within a space.

P Processes Sequence of related actions which can change or modify the environment are known as
processes

I Interaction Where two or more objects, environments or processes have an effect on each other

C Change Occurs in both natural and cultural environments, where something is different,
transforms, to be different from what it was before

S Sustainability Involves adopting ways of thinking and behaving that allow individuals, groups,
and societies to meet their needs and aspirations without preventing future generations from
meeting theirs.

Kaitiakitanga is linked with sustainability as both will take care and of natural resources and care for
the land

Taonga is linked with environment as both look at the natural wonders around them such as
mountains and rivers.
