INTRODUCTION
Gujrat heavy chemicals limited was commissioned in March 1988, at a cost of US $220
million at Sutrapada, Gujrat. The plant manufactures high grade dense and light soda ash, for
domestic and international use.

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona
or sodium carbonate bearing brines or manufactured from one of the most important of all
chemical products and is a starting material in producing many other chemicals, is produced
in largest amount compared with other soda products. It is an essential raw material in glass
chemicals, detergents, and other important industrial products.

1.1 raw materials:

1. Limestone
2. Salt
3. Coal
4. Power
5. Water

Production of soda ash is divided in 7 sections here.

100 SECTION
This section deals with the salt dissolution and brine purification. Through a roller
conveyor salt is drawn in a dissolver from up side and from down side water is supplied
in dissolver. An agitator is used for stirring. And we find raw brine in dissolver. This is
called raw brine because there are many impurities in this brine which is need to purify.
To remove impurity of Mg, magnesium carbonate is mixed and to remove impurity of
Ca, sodium carbonate is mixed. Now this is passed in settler where flocculent is mixed,
here also an agitator is installed. In settler impurities settle down and pure brine is found
which is stored in purified brine tank.

Now mechanical devices which are used in this section are centrifugal pump for liquid
flow and agitator.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational
kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational
energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. The centrifugal pump
creates an increase in pressure by transferring mechanical energy from the motor
to the fluid through the rotating impeller. The fluid flows from the inlet to the
impeller centre and out along its blades. The centrifugal force hereby increases
the fluid velocity and consequently also the kinetic energy is transformed to
pressure.
Shaft of centrifugal pump is connected to a motor by a rigid coupling. After
coupling there is a bearing housing in which a deep brew bearing is motor side
and a roller bearing in pump side. After bearing housing there is back casing
which is connected to impeller. Glanze is provided there to stop sealing glanze is
made of taflon on asbestos. Circlip is provided to lock bearing. Oil seal is
provided to prevent flow of oil from bearing.
