Reference Description

Convert To HIPS

The temporal overlap functionality in Simrad conversion was occasionally failing

when scanning the directory for overlapping data, which caused the converted lines
to be missing the overlapping data. This has been fixed.

Mosaic Editor

Profiles in GeoBaRs were slightly out of alignment due to the differences between
ground and geographic positions. The data is now being rotated correctly for all
sonar types. As well, GeoBaRs created from Kongsberg EM data have Bathymetry
registration (along track) to improve the geo-registration of the intensity data.

CARIS HIPS and SIPS 8.1.1
Highlights

Side scan contact images

When contacts are digitized in Side Scan Editor, images are automatically generated and stored in
the HIPS file. These images can be viewed using the new Image Preview window.

Simplified configuration for new side scan contacts

As a follow-up to the addition of the Catalogue Editor in HIPS and SIPS 8.1, addition of new side
scan contact types no longer requires any additional configuration. The list of available types is now
automatically read from the HIPS file catalogue.

Filtering for Critical Sounding Detection

To reduce the number of critical soundings generated by the Critical Sounding Detection tool, an
optional radius filter has been introduced. Using functionality similar to Sounding Selection, the
radius filter removes a sounding within the user-defined radius of another, keeping the shoaler or
deeper value.

Reference Description

Background

Some surfaces would not open in HIPS and SIPS as background data. This is no
longer an issue.

Calibration

Calibration is now applying the settings for each line from the last time it was
Merged, so that GPS Tide, Refraction and Smoothing are all applied as they are
applied to the data shown in the main Subset Editor display.

Compute GPS Tide

The Geoid Separation model was not being applied in all instances for NGS
GEOID files. This has been corrected

Contacts

Some .hips files from previous versions contained incorrect coordinate systems
for contact storage. This is now fixed so that the .hips file is updated to the
correct coordinate system when opened.

Convert To HIPS

SDF data containing datagrams that are not supported by the HIPS and SIPS
Conversion no longer cause the conversion to fail.

CUBE Surface, Swath Angle Surface, Uncertainty Surface

Scanning of the surface during surface creation was causing the saving of
surfaces to take longer than in 7.1.2.x. This is no longer an issue.
The speed of surface creation on a network has been improved.

Display

Colour by SV Profile now works correctly when two profiles have the same
location in the SVP file.

HIPS GUI

When multiple users work on a project at the same time, issues arose that
prevented a user from seeing the progress of a process, when a second user
was concurrently converting data into the project. This has been corrected so
that the progress bars will remain visible for the user running a process while
another is converting data.
An issue has been corrected that arose when more than one user had the same
project open, and conversion being run by one user caused a second user to
lose the line selection made in the project.

multiple processors/cores during concurrent processing.

Mosaic Editor

Altitude offsets set in Side Scan properties are now being applied during the
Mosaic creation process.

Processes

Under certain domain restrictions, the HIPS batch engines spawned per process
were each taking a network licence causing licence checks to fail. This has been
resolved.

SIPS Processes

Recompute Towfish Navigation is no longer failing when there are no ship track
lines.

Miscellaneous

The Measure Shadow tool in Side Scan Editor is now functioning correctly.

CARIS HIPS and SIPS 8.1.0
Highlights

New SIPS engine for processing side scan data

The SIPS processing engine has been upgraded to reduce processing times and improve the
quality of the resulting imagery.
For most formats, conversion to HIPS and SIPS no longer down-samples the imagery to 8-bit.
The quality of the source format is maintained throughout processing.
Corrections in Side Scan Editor are now visualized on-the-fly in the display, instead of each
intermediate step being written to disk. Final corrections are applied only when creating
GeoBaRs or a mosaic.
Slant Range Correction is now calculated automatically to maintain the best resolution.
GeoBaRs are no longer required before creating a mosaic. A mosaic can be created directly
after conversion with minimal configuration. The GeoBaR workflow is still supported for clients
requiring line-by-line corrections.

Functional Updates
Shoal Depth True Position surfaces can now be created in HIPS and SIPS. New optional layers
for this surface type have been added: Density, Mean, Standard Deviation, Deep, Median,
Horizontal TPU (Total Propagated Uncertainty) and Vertical TPU.

An automatic critical sounding detection tool has been introduced. This function contours a source
BASE surface, locates all isolated contours, and flags the shoalest or deepest sounding within each
isolation (depending on direction). Flags and attributes for the resulting critical soundings can be
customized by the user.

Holidays (data gaps) generated by the BASE SURFACE QC Report function are now also added to
the bounding polygon as holes. This simplifies producing vector coverage reports for re-survey
areas.

The ability to perform calibration on motion sensor values and time offsets has been added to the
new Calibration module introduced in HIPS and SIPS 8.0.

Export to GML and Formatted ASCII has been added for all feature types.

Format Support
Support for the Norwegian Hydrographic Service tide file format has been added to the Load Tide
function.

Support for Kongsberg PFreeHeave post-processed heave has been added. The Load
TrueHeave function has been renamed Load Delayed Heave to reflect support for additional
formats.

Support for TerraPos post-processed navigation has been added to the Load Attitude/Navigation
function.

CARIS HIPS and SIPS Changes List 35

Catalogue Editor
A Catalogue Editor has been introduced to HIPS and SIPS. This editor allows a user to modify an
existing HIPS file catalogue, or to create a template catalogue that can be re-used for all new HIPS
files.

Users can add custom attributes to a HIPS file catalogue. These attributes can then be added to
any existing HIPS object, including track lines, critical soundings and SIPS contacts.
User-defined SIPS contact objects can be added to a HIPS file.

Note: for the 8.1.0 release, an entry must also be made in a system file for the object
type to display as an option during digitizing. This requirement will be removed in a
future update. Contact CARIS Customer Support for additional information.

Catalogue Editor includes a template catalogue that can be used for all new HIPS files created
by the application, and can be modified and shared between workstations. This allows all users
to start from a custom HIPS file catalogue for new projects.

36 CARIS HIPS and SIPS Changes List

Interface Improvements
An Attributes window has been added to the application. This window allows a user to view
attributes of features in an ENC, HOB or HIPS file layer. For HOB and HIPS file layers, attributes
can be modified and saved.

The Show Rejected function has been replaced with a Display Filter. This Filter applies to all HIPS
and SIPS Editors.
When active, the display is filtered for only the types selected in the filter(e.g., Rejected and Desig-
nated):

CARIS HIPS and SIPS Changes List 37

When inactive all types are displayed (e.g., Accepted, Designated, Outstanding and Examined):

The Project Properties dialogue box has been removed. All project properties are now accessible in
the Properties window when the "HIPS_Data" layer is selected.

Colour by Tide for tide zones has been added as a colouring option for track lines. The track line
options have been re-organized into a drop-down menu in the Properties window.

Sound Velocity Correction is no longer required in HIPS to colour Simrad data by "SV Profile". The
required indexes are now generated during conversion to HIPS.
