THE WHIMSICAL WORLD By NANCY SPRAKER Muppets, originated by puppeteer-film-maker Jim Henson, are the lovable, like-nothing-else Creatures (varmints? monsters? thingies?) that you and your children have been enjoying on television for the past ten years. Now, along with their usual appearances on shows like EG Sullivan’s~they'll be there on December 21— Muppets have become regulars on the exciting new television series for preschool children, “Sesame Street.” ‘This program, which just made its debut on November 10, is broadcast daily (and in some. cities twice daily) over more than a hundred seventy education stations, and might be de- scribed as a video version of Headstart. Puppets, cartoon animation, live-action film, comedy-ad- venture parodies and celebrity guests are used to teach children letters and numbers, increase their vocabulary, sharpen reasoning skills, ac- quaint them with social concepts and generally prepare them for school. The Muppets’ role, like that of the other characters and people on “Ses- ame Street,” is to disguise instruction with en- tertainment. Obviously, Muppets and children have a spe- cial rapport, and that’s because the puppets are created by a special man in a special place, Muppetsville is an old carriage house in New York's East Sixties; nailed beside the door is a weather-beaten plank bearing a hand-printed message: “Henson Associates and Muppets, Inc. .. . This sign will be replaced with a nice ‘expensive one some day—maybe.” Passersby ‘occasionally leave [continued on page 100) (PETTING THE WLATCH (J! 10 ight) Jim Henson with his son Brian, sks daughier Cheryl, eight; son Jonn Paul, tour.
