MeanTimeBetweenFailure(MTBF)isareliabilitytermusedtoprovidetheamount
offailurespermillionhoursforaproduct.Thisisthemostcommoninquiryabouta
productslifespan,andisimportantinthedecisionmakingprocessoftheenduser.
MTBFismoreimportantforindustriesandintegratorsthanforconsumers.Most
consumersarepricedrivenandwillnottakeMTBFintoconsideration,noristhedata
oftenreadilyavailable.Ontheotherhand,whenequipmentsuchasmediaconvertersor
switchesmustbeinstalledintomissioncriticalapplications,MTBFbecomesvery
important.Inaddition,MTBFmaybeanexpectedlineiteminanRFQ(RequestFor
Quote).Withouttheproperdata,amanufacturerspieceofequipmentwouldbe
immediatelydisqualified.

MeanTimeToRepair(MTTR)isthetimeneededtorepairafailedhardwaremodule.
Inanoperationalsystem,repairgenerallymeansreplacingafailedhardwarepart.Thus,
hardwareMTTRcouldbeviewedasmeantimetoreplaceafailedhardwaremodule.
Takingtoolongtorepairaproductdrivesupthecostoftheinstallationinthelongrun,
duetodowntimeuntilthenewpartarrivesandthepossiblewindowoftimerequiredto
scheduletheinstallation.ToavoidMTTR,manycompaniespurchasespareproductsso
thatareplacementcanbeinstalledquickly.Generally,however,customerswillinquire
abouttheturnaroundtimeofrepairingaproduct,andindirectly,thatcanfallintothe
MTTRcategory.

MeanTimeBetweenReplacements(MTBR)isusuallyusedfornonrepairable
componentsorsubsystemsinarepairablesystem.Forexample,alightbulbina
machineisreplacedaftereveryTphoursofoperationorreplacedatfailure.Themean

MeanTimeToFailure(MTTF)isabasicmeasureofreliabilityfornonrepairable
systems.Itisthemeantimeexpecteduntilthefirstfailureofapieceofequipment.
MTTFisastatisticalvalueandismeanttobethemeanoveralongperiodoftimeanda
largenumberofunits.Technically,MTBFshouldbeusedonlyinreferencetoa
repairableitem,whileMTTFshouldbeusedfornonrepairableitems.However,MTBF
iscommonlyusedforbothrepairableandnonrepairableitems.

MeanTimeBetweenDowningEvent(MTBDE)describestheexpectedtimebetween
twoconsecutivedowningeventsforarepairablesystem.

FailureInTime(FIT)isanotherwayofreportingMTBF.FITreportsthenumberof
expectedfailuresperonebillionhoursofoperationforadevice.Thistermisused
particularlybythesemiconductorindustrybutisalsousedbycomponent
manufacturers.FITcanbequantifiedinanumberofways:1000devicesfor1million
hoursor1milliondevicesfor1000hourseach,andothercombinations.FITand
ConfidenceLimits(CL)areoftenprovidedtogether.Incommonusage,aclaimto95%
confidenceinsomethingisnormallytakenasindicatingvirtualcertainty.Instatistics,a
claimto95%confidencesimplymeansthattheresearcherhasseensomethingoccur
thatonlyhappensonetimeintwentyorless.Forexample,componentmanufacturers
willtakeasmallsamplingofacomponent,testxnumberofhours,andthendetermine
iftherewereanyfailuresinthetestbed.Basedonthenumberoffailuresthatoccur,the
CLwillthenbeprovidedaswell.

dierence between the onset of revenue impacting event and its actual detection (either by auto
monitoring or manual reporting by business/technical teams). Aer which an Incident (or trouble
ticket) is created for technician to work on, from where MTTR clock starts.
