OFFICE TYPES
Closed office: A closed office environments consist of offices with closed off spaces,
cubicles or isolated environments. These offices are more private but tend to foster
introversive behavior as well as prevent collaboration and communication in an
office environment.
Open Office: A open office environment consist of several workstations and open
areas with many workstations. These office types place people together in clusters or
large groups when working. This being the most preferred work environment, it
fosters comradery, teamwork and an overall happier, more productive work
environment. There is a lack of privacy and some users of this office type may
complain of being bothered often due to this lack of privacy.
Co-working spaces: Co-working spaces are offices that utilize free work areas in
which people may work in a different location or share a work area. Enabling
communication and bit more contact often fosters an environment for increased
productivity.
OPEN OFFICE
CLOSED OFFICE
CO-WORKING SPACES
CULTURE OF THE OFFICE
ENVIRONMENT
Large companies such as Microsoft utilize the open office space. This type of space contain
free areas with no assigned seating. Office cultures wanting to promote communication and
encourage information to flow freely. This option also has been thought to be easier for
management as well because it makes them more approachable. This enables transparency,
openness and communication.
Closed office spaces are more so for those that require more private environments such as
legal offices, the need for privacy is a must. Closed office layouts are for those that love their
privacy and that prefer to avoid distractions. This environment also foster more creativity,
more productivity and increases concentration.
Co-Working spaces are designed for those that desire a high energy, collaborative and
interactive environment. The co-work space is a response to the oppressive cubicle.
Unassigned seating has brought people together, preventing isolated behavior, high
engagement and interaction between people of different groups. Fostering a work place of
total productivity and team work, all for one, one for all approach is the concepy of the
co-working space.

Top Five Workplace Issues

1. Poor ergonomic office furniture in workstations

2. Lack of adjustability of the workstation
3. No natural light or fresh air within the work place
4. Workstations are in close quarters so there is a lack of
adequate workspace
5. Workstation design which makes it difficult to function
quickly and efficiently. Area is not user friendly.

Work Modes: Prescription typing, patient care, stocking,

supply and inventory

Womack Outpatient Pharmacy

Relationships within the workplace are that of the regular staff,

supervisory/managerial staff and executive staff. Offices of the staff
that are in supervisory, managerial or executive positions are all
adjacent to one another making contact easy and access quick. This
is a closed office setting, with each office space having a door for
privacy. Regular staff members are able to interact with the superiors
as needed and proximity from management to staff workstations is
not far.
Ergonomics of the staff work areas are poor, which was one of the
largest complaints in the work place. A lot of the equipment and
computers that are used are not ergonomically designed and the
workstations are set up in the same fashion so discomfort is a
complaint after several work hours. Support, reach, vision and
breathing all need to be addressed with the work area. There is no
ability to sit while working due to constantly needing to move
around to several areas frequently. There is frequent and continual,
repetitive reaching for equipment or to interact with patients causing
muscular discomfort. The computer screens at most every
workstation cannot be adjusted much if any to accommodate the
user causing neck strain.
The air is recycled so there is no fresh air entering the workplace, nor
employees and patients.
All storage space is down low, which means more bending and
kneeling to access these areas. The panels that separate each
workstation are like cubicle type panels and provide very little
privacy.
Electrical wiring and cables are designed to go behind the panels or
underneath so they do not get on the way, however, there is no task
lighting for typing prescriptions, which is a constant part of the job.
There is only fluorescent lighting on the ceiling panels over head.

company area and meet all requirements and desires of the client.
Multi-level building design will provide space and diversity to meet
the requirements for each type of space. Primary challenges are to
deign according to desired adjacencies as well as providing
accessibility to upper floors.

Project must include the following areas:
