Memorial Event for Dr Giannandrea Poesio, University of Bedfordshire, Tuesday 6 June 2017

The University of Bedfordshire organised and hosted a memorial event for Dr Giannandrea Poesio,
who, since 2011, had served as Reader in Dance and Director of the Research Institute for Media,
Arts and Performance. After some struggles with his health, Giannandrea passed away on February
9, 2017. Held in the University of Bedfordshire Theatre, the memorial event was attended by both
current and former students, colleagues and friends from across the academic and professional
dance worlds.

Professor Jan Domin, Dean of Creative Arts Technologies and Science, opened the ceremony with
some memories of Giannandrea. Professor Domin commented on his energy, care and compassion
in his work, and the passion that could be glimpsed in his eyes when discussing dance. Vice
Chancellor Bill Rammell followed with a tribute that accounted for his significant contributions as a
dance historian and as an inspiring teacher who was able to engage the diverse student body at the
University of Bedfordshire.

Following that, Professor Janet Lansdale, a friend and colleague of Giannandrea for thirty years,
recalled with fondness her relationship with him as a PhD supervisor, and the kindling of a
connection that stood the test of time. Professor Lansdale drew attention to Giannandreas
contributions to the development of the field of dance history, through his academic work and
through his roles as board member of the Society of Dance History Scholars and President of the
European Association of Dance Historians. Professor Lansdale concluded by paying tribute to
Giannandrea as a modern day renaissance man, a sentiment shared by many present.

Dr Tamara Ashley, a former student at Roehampton Institute and colleague at the University of
Bedfordshire, recalled Giannandreas humorous and entertaining stories that illuminated the lives of
dancers from the past. Describing him as the master of the anecdote, Dr Ashley recalled his
immense enthusiasm and encouragement as both a tutor and senior colleague. Current University of
Bedfordshire students, Nancy Lewendon and Mollie Street offered their gratitude for Giannandreas
support of the musical theatre society. Mollie recalled how Giannandrea advised the students to
celebrate tits, teeth and glitter as they started working on a new musical. Nancy emphasised how
Giannandrea made each and every student feel special in their endeavours.

The event concluded with University of Bedfordshire colleague, Dr Jane Carr, inviting the attendees
to share their own memories with one another. A short film that captured Giannandreas energetic
and engaging oratory abilities was shown. The evening performance of student work that followed
was also dedicated to the memory of GIannandrea. The event was both a moving and celebratory
tribute to the life of a remarkable, inspiring and gifted academic who will be greatly missed by all
who had the privilege to meet and work with him.

Giannandrea is survived by his partner Giannfranco Moradi.
