Machine Reliability. The Early Years

In the 1980s the root causes for mechanical failure in hydraulic systems and rotating lubri-
cated machinery are well understood; contamination in the lubricating oil.

The major contributing factors were also easy to identify;

poor fluid handling procedures compounded by
ineffective air breathers.

With the introduction of the OILMISER FILLorDRAIN system,

fluid handling procedures throughout a manufacturing facility
could be standardized quickly and efficiently.

The results were immediate and undeniable;

improved reliability and increased productivity.

The OILMISER FILLorDRAIN featured two distinct passageways in one

cast aluminum body. The vertical passageway is the airway and is pro-
tected by a 5 micron replaceable air filter. Any air entering or exiting the
reservoir, has to pass through the high efficiency air filter element.
The filter element is protected by a high visibility, all weather, molded cap.

The other passageway forms of a 90 pipe elbow in the cast body. With a 1 inch pipe cut to the proper
length and threaded into the bottom pipe port of the FILLorDRAIN the reservoir could now be filled or
drained using a portable filter cart. A FILLorDRAIN mounted on the reservoir addressed one half of the
problem; airborne contamination getting into the reservoir.

The FDT-1000 Tank Mount FILLorDRAIN is much more than a conven-

tional filler/breather. The extremely efficient, 5 micron air filter remains in
place throughout both the filling or draining procedure.

This encourages and facilitates the use of a filter cart whenever a reser-
voir is being serviced, an essential procedure for maximizing the reliability
of every hydraulic system.

A second version of the OILMISER FILLorDRAIN addresses the other half of the air-
borne contamination problem; the suppliers oil drum.

The FDD-1100-5533 Drum Mount FILLorDRAIN has a 2" NPT male pipe thread, and
mounts directly into the 2 inch pipe bung on a standard oil drum. A 1" pipe extends to
the bottom. The " NPT pipe bung remains sealed, and the drum is remains upright.

This closed the loop on airborne contamination between the suppliers oil drum and the
reservoir long before the term Reliability Centered Maintenance was coined

Oil Cleanliness , Oil Sampling , Oil Analysis & Condition Based Maintenance .
Kidney-Loop Filtration, often called oil dialysis, for lubricated machinery, functions independently of the normal operation
of the equipment. The best form of health care and the best option for extending the service life of lubricated equip-
ment, off-line filtration, can be added to most equipment in the field.

OILMISER Technology offers a family of tools and accessories that will bring all the benefits of kidney-loop filtration to
most lubricated equipment in a matter of minutes.

To add Kidney-Loop Filtration to your machinery, you will require three prerequisites;

1. a high quality air breather to control airborne contamination in the air space above the oil.
2. an oil outlet below the oil level for a suction line from the gearbox sump or hydraulic reservoir.
3. an oil inlet above the oil level, for the continuous return of recycled polished oil, back
to the machine.

The OILMISER Off-Line Filtration Kit delivers all three prerequisites in one, easy to
install, component

Hydraulic Reservoirs & Kidney-Loop Filtration

On hydraulic systems oil quality is essential for equipment reliability. High pressures,
high speeds, close mechanical tolerances, and high operating temperatures, means that
oil cleanliness is crucial to the life expectancy of hydraulic components.

adds independent kidney-loop filtration to most hydraulic reservoir
in minutes. Without any tank modifications, the six screws and the Air Filter & Cap
existing filler breather are removed, exposing the 2" 5m Replaceable
diameter opening. The OILMISER Off-Line Filtra-
tion Kit, with the same 6 hole footprint is then inserted External Sample

The Oil Drum

Fig. 1
Where Reliability Centered Maintenance Begins
The oil drum; United Nations certified, with a capacity of 55 US gal-
lons, 45 Imperial gallons, or 208 Liters. Its quite possibly the most
recognized symbol of our industrial community. A nuisance or a
convenience is open to debate, however the reality is, the oil drum
isnt going away soon, so use it for all its worth.
Generally the first step in fluid handling is filling a drum followed by
dispensing the drum. Too often, these are also the first steps in oil
degradation. Potentially, the contamination introduced at this point
can be the most damaging, acting as the catalyst for an ever ex-
panding wear cycle. The OILMISER FILLorDRAIN has effec-
tively addressed this problem for over 25 years.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link

Above (Fig.1) is the OILMISER team of Drum Dispensing tools,
the basic Drum Dispensing Wand, # FDD-1100-5533-QN51, and
the Off-Line Filtration Kit (Drum) # OLF-1335-SP-QD51.
Continuing with the theme of a safe and clean working environment,
the Dispensing Wand Stand # DWS-1135 completes the picture.

With an OILMISER FILLorDRAIN on the reservoir, and an

OILMISER Dispensing Wand in the oil drum, the loop is closed in
the fluid transferring procedure. You control the variables, be they
the ever-present airborne contaminants, dirt and moisture, or a host
of solid contaminants suspended in the lubricating oil. The real
benefits of that filter cart can now be fully realized.

Pictured on the right (Fig.2) is a typical oil dispensing station, with

the oil drum safely in the up-right position. Using an OILMISER Drum Dispensing Wand and a filter cart,
the oil drum becomes a safe, and cost effective oil storage and dispensing station. When two or more oil
grades are used in the same location, each oil grade is identified and assigned a designated Dispensing
Wand and a Dispensing Wand Stand. The 2" NPT bung plug, once removed from the drum, is threaded
into the Dispensing Wand Stand, a simple convenience that further supports a cleanliness mind set.

Fig. 3 OILMISER Dispensing Wands have a separate filtered airway. This removes the
need to open the " NPT drum bung. It also eliminates all the hazards associated
with any unnecessary opening. In addition to the standard OILMISER 5m air
filter and cap, a number of top end adaptors (Fig.3) accommodate most particulate
and water absorbing spin-on filters, and most of the desiccant air breathers.

Pictured above (Fig.2) is the OILMISER Filter Cart, # OFC-15025-3403M-QD51,

featuring a 3 m.microglass oil filter, a flow rate of 1.9 US gpm., a hp. electric
motor, and unparalled portability.

Sampling are two of the prin-
cipal weapons in the arsenal
of Reliability Centered Main-
tenance.
The earlier these procedures
can be added to the battery
of oil maintenance tools, the
sooner the benefits of RCM
will be realized.
The ideal starting point?
Your suppliers oil drum.

Pictured above left (Fig.4) is a typical set-up for kidney-loop filtration right in the oil drum. Again, only the 2"
NPT pipe bung is used. Any special or area specific air quality issues can be addressed with one of the op-
tional top end adaptors and the appropriate air filtration system. All OILMISER Drum Dispensing units can
be ordered with a sampling port. Oil samples are drawn using a standard vacuum pump. Now, cleanliness
levels can be quantified at the very start of the reliability cycle. Drum dispensing (Fig.5) is as simple as dis-
connecting the return hose at the oil drum, and redirecting this polished oil into a secondary container.

How Clean is the Oil in a Plastic Bucket

It has been generally accepted that oil supplied in a new plastic bucket is as clean as it can get.

At a large USA research facility, a team of well trained and focused maintenance personnel clearly demonstrated how
better maintenance procedures can improve equipment reliability and reduce recurring mechanical failures.

However, despite their best practices in oil maintenance, which included oil sam-
pling, oil analysis, and tracking results, they were really struggling to keep par-
ticulate levels low in their compressors. The problem was traced to the cleanli-
ness of the new lube oil supplied in 5 gallon (20L) plastic buckets.

OILMISER Technology has over thirty years of experience in fluids handling,

including kidney-loop filtration on hydraulic reservoirs, all types of gearboxes
and lubricated machinery, and polishing new and used oil directly in a 55 gallon
(208L) oil drum. The OILMISER Off-Line Filtration Kit was a natural fit.

A modified version of the The OILMISER Off-Line Filtration Kit is specifically

designed to fit through the pour spout of a
standard 5 gallon (20L) plastic oil pail.
