Index Card Exercise
Kirchhoffs Rules
1. Draw a large circuit diagram so you can clearly label
all quantities.
2. Assume a direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) to
travel around each closed loop.
3. Assume a current direction. Label the current direction
passing through each resistor and emf accordingly. If a
junction is present, use the junction rule to express the
outgoing current in terms of the incoming currents.
4. Travel around the loop in this direction, and add
potential changes as you cross a resistor or emf. Use
sign conventions for each.
5. Use the loop rule: equate sum of potential changes to
zero.
6. Continue until you have equal number of unknowns
and independent equations.
7. Solve equations simultaneously to get unknowns.
ATTENDANCE QUIZ
For the given circuit below, what is I, I1 and I2 ?

3. Loop rule: left loop bcdeb
2 3 + 21V 2 2 + 1 6 = 0
For the given circuit below, what is I, I1 and I2 ?

(1) = 1 + 2

(2) 12 1 6 + 18V = 0

(3) 2 3 + 21V 2 2 + 1 6 = 0

Eliminate I in (2) using (1): (1 + 2 ) 12 1 6 + 18V = 0 (4)

Add up (4) and (3), eliminating 2 :
1 18 I2 12 + 18V = 0
+1 6 I2 5 + 21V = 0 3

I2 27 + 81V = 0
2 = 3A (5)
(5) To (3): 3 3 + 21V 3 2 + 1 6 = 0 1 = 1
