Developmentally Appropriate Cognitive/ Language Environments

I. Implications of Preoperational and Concrete Operational Thinking and DAP


a. Unsuited for the learning tasks and methods of the typical elementary school classroom
b. There are not real changes in the thinking and problem-solving abilities of these children.
c. Notably mathematical skills, related to time and distance are beyond children who are only
developing concrete operational thinking.
d. The majority of kindergarten programs today attempt to each children formal academics using
formal methods.
II. Readiness has to be valued by including:
a. The diversity and inequity of childrens early life experiences
b. Wide range of variation in young childrens development and learning
c. The degree to which school expectations of children entering kindergarten are reasonable,
appropriate, and supportive of individual differences.
III. Cognitive/ Language Goals for Primary Education
a. Ensure that children have successful early experiences in learning
b. Ensure that children play active roles in their learning
c. Ensure that children develop dispositions toward learning
d. Ensure that children have appropriate learning opportunities to develop basic competencies of
literacy and numeracy
e. Ensure that children have opportunities to continue developing their individual and personal
interests

Question:

1. In integrated curriculum, children are exposed with a theme which relates all subject in school (mathematics,
science, etc.) However, we know that theres a belief that children needs to be exposed with the subject they
are interested with. In integrated curriculum, how can we focus on the subject that they are interested in since
we know that one topic relates with all subjects in school?
