Leader in Me training
showing results in Evart
EVART Evart elemen-
tary school students showed
a return on an investment
community organizations
made last summer. The stu-
dents demonstrated their
leadership skills at a brace
of assemblies held late in
the school year. At the as-
semblies were many of those
who contributed for Leader
in Me training for elementary
school faculty and staff. Kin-
dergarten and first-grade stu-
dents led one assembly, and
students in grades two, three
and four led the other.
The assemblies had their
roots in last summers com-
munity activism.
Sarah Bailey, Evarts el-
ementary school principal,
had been hoping to obtain
Leader-in-Me training for the
schools faculty and staff last
summer.
The Leader in Me is a pro-
gram its developers say teach-

and life skills to students. It is
based on the book The Seven
Habits of Highly Effective
People. School personnel re-

of three training seminars

mers training has already
been provided. The Osceola
County Community Founda-
tion underwrote the cost of
the year two training, Bailey
said.
EVART Theodore Pagano,
chief executive of Michigan
Potash Co., was in town recently
to discuss the benefits of his
companys proposed solution
mining operation. He pressed
his case during a June 1 Friends
of Evart meeting and later that
evening at a town hall meeting.
Potash, Pagano said, is one
of the most tightly controlled
commodities in the world. Cur-
rently, only 10 countries in the
world produce potash. Potash is
important to the entire country,
and the Hersey reserve, where
Michigan Potash Co. hopes to
set up shop, has the highest-
grade potash in the world.
The Hersey reserve is also
large. Pagano said the proposed
potash extraction facility would
be a generational project. He
estimates the reserve has a
150-year supply of the sub-
stance.
About 94 percent of the potash
used right now in the country is
imported, Pagano said. Potash
potassium is an important
component of many fertilizers.
It also is a highly sought prod-
uct. Pagano said a number of
countries are looking for sup-
plies of it to import.
Solution mining is an efficient
method for extracting potash
from deep reserves. Water is
pumped into the ground where
the mineral deposits lie. Potash
dissolves in the water and the
water is pumped back to the
surface where the potash is
removed. The process uses no
mine shafts, has no need for
personnel to work underground
and it leaves no tailings behind,
Pagano said.
Pagano said the construction
of the potash extraction facility
will provide employment oppor-
tunities for about 300 workers.
When operational, the plant will
employ about 170. Total operat-
ing costs will run about $60 mil-
lion per year.
The plant will supply the en-
tire state with potash with the
water of one irrigation well,
Pagano said. And, because po-
tassium helps plants conserve
water, Pagano said farmers will
be able to reduce irrigation by
adding potash to the soil.

ney transplant.
Garys wife, Leslie Fite,
said Gary is looking for-
ward to getting his life
back on track. He loves
life and just wants to live
it. He has always been
a fighter and has never
given in to illness, Leslie
added.
The Fites face daunting
medical bills.
For fundraising support
and guidance, the pair
asked the National Foun-
dation for Transplants for
assistance. The foundation
is a nonprofit organization
that helps patients raise
funds to pay for trans-
plant-related expenses
through community-based
fundraising activities.
According to officials
with the National Founda-
tion for Transplants, the
average kidney transplant
costs more than $330,000.
Although health insur-
ance will cover a por-
tion of the cost of the
transplant, many related
expenses remain. For the
rest of his life, Gary will
need folllow-up care and
daily anti-rejection medi-
cations.
Gary said is thankful for
the love and support he
has already received dur-
ing his ordeal.

Betsy is survived by

gan, Judy (Rick) Smith,
Antioch, Tennessee, Joan
(Fred) Pekrul, Big Rap-
ids, Michigan, and Jerie
(Mike) Dyer, Evart, Mich-
igan; nine grandchil-
dren; 19 great-grandchil-
dren; five great-great-
grandchildren; and two
brothers, Delbert and
Cleon (Donna). She is al-
so survived by her dear
friends, Lloyd Rehopkf
and Norma Robbe.
She was preceded in
death by Paul, her hus-
