Maths Portfolio

Statistics and Standard Deviation

May 2017

Individual Goals
After you completed your TRansformations mini portfolio, you wrote down some individual goals
for maths. Add those goals to the table below.

SMART goal What is your strategy for achieving this

goal?

Ask a question/ or share once a week Every time I have a question ask it or in class
share observation

Distribute work among group members Make sure everyone knows what we are
evenly doing, and they have something to do.

Challenge myself once a week Take on more work when I feel like I did not
understand the topic as much as I would like.

Mathematical Concepts and weekly growth

Each week, reflect on your maths work, skills as a collaborator and one or more of your
individual goals. Provide evidence of your growth and plans for the coming week

Week 1 & 2:
Mathematical Skill - what Evidence of your growth and understanding. Think about

week?

The skill I worked on was When working on the Rinky, Dinky, and Minky problem We
finding the mean, and using looked at four data sets. When I found the mean for each one I
the same data with the same realized the all four data sets had 20 as there mean. I learned
mean. that you could still learn about the data set by looking at other
things besides there mean and other people might find other
ways to extract more data from the data set.

Ex) Best way to arrange the data set from least spread to -
most spread. Rinky find the range for each data set

Data Set 1: 19,19,20,20,21,21 Range 2

Data Set 2: 10,10,20,20,,2,21 Range 20
Data Set 3: 12,13,13,27,27,28 Range 16
Data Set 4: 9,20,20,,20,20,31 Range 22
Least spread out to most spread out Data set 1, 3, 2, 4
Based on just looking at the data and not the range I would've
said 1,2,3,4. It would of been different for everyone because
everyone has different perspective on data.

Group collaboration and Evidence of your growth. What do you want to try this

skills did you try this week?

This week we worked in This activity helped me grow on being more open to other
groups when we worked on people's ideas and also saying more of my ideas. This is
the activity gathering data. because throughout this activity I noticed that the activities and
tables we were filling in were destined to be different from
what our partners were putting in theirs. When we were doing
the time is relative experiment we all had different perceptions
of 5 seconds passing. For me 5 seconds of streaming of the
lock is actually 5.41 but for another person it is 4.07 seconds.

When we were working on When trying to figure out ways to weigh the bags the least
the problem of the week I amount of times. Some people were trying to figure out how to
was able to work with my put them in groups and some people were trying to figure out
group, so all of us were other ways. I felt like everyone in the group was doing

week?

This week we learned about This week when we were working on standard deviation, I
standard deviation. didnt really understand, But my partner sasha did and she
explained it to me step by step and in multiple ways until I
understood what was going on. We also analyzed data and
make frequency bar graphs using google sheets.

This week we worked in I was scared to ask for help when we were working on putting
group when working on the class data into frequency bar graphs because Dr. Cate had
analyzing data and making already gone over it a lot of times. But sasha saw I was not
frequency bar graphs. understanding what Dr. Cate was doing and she explained it to
me in multiple ways how to do it. The habits of mathematician I
used was collaborate and listen with modesty, this is because
when my partner and I got stuck on something we would
bounce ideas around to see if we could come up with ideas.
Another habit was staying organized this was important
because we were working with multiple sets of data.

progress in this week?

I did not challenge myself I did not challenge myself this because I was focusing on
this week. understanding everything we were learning.

Summary of understanding
Look at Edmodo and calculate the percentage of submitted assignments: 100%

Look at Powerschool and find out the proportion of your assignments with an A, B, C, D or F
grade. Complete this table:

Grade Number of
assignments

A 9

B 4

C 0

D 1

F 0
Summary of understanding. (If someone outside the school asked you to explain what you
learned during this unit and how it is relevant to your life, what would you say? Think about the
progression of concepts from start to finish and think about what new things you would like to
learn and why.)
Through this unit we learned that everyone analyzes data differently, we did an activity in Dr.
Cates class to prove that everyone analyzes things differently, like for example we did this
activity where someone looked at the clock for 5 seconds and someone would time their
perception of what they thought was 5 seconds. We also learned about frequency bar graphs, a
frequency bar graph shows the number of occurrences of a particular number. Than we also
went over standard deviation. Standard deviation is the quantity calculated to indicate the extent
of deviation for a group as a whole.

Provide a justification for your grade:

Grade Justification. (Looking back over all of your work during this unit, suggest a grade that
you think you deserve and provide justification for that grade. Explain how you have grown as a
mathematician and in your effort to achieve goals. Remember that a higher grade is justified by
growth not final proficiency. For example, even if you understood all of the mathematical
concepts, but you didnt challenge yourself in your group work or to achieve your goals, your
grade would not be as high.)

I grew this unit by making lots of mistakes, this unit in my opinion was really challenging. It was
difficult for me to understand what the difference between a bar graph and a frequency bar
graph was. I made plenty mistakes the first time I tried to make a bar graph on google sheets, I
kept on making a regular bar graph. Also when trying to wrap my head around you can get
interpret data differently from other people, I always thought people viewed data the same way.
I challenged myself this unit by trying to figure out new ways to look at data or different way I
could use the data sets.

What grade do you think you deserve for this unit?: A
