MODULE 1 : GETTING STARTED

DATE PERFORMED : 19.05.2017
GROUP : EH243 6B
INTRODUCTION

In this example several inlet gas streams from wellheads are to be flashed through a series of
separators in order to remove water, along with some absorbed carbon dioxide from the main
process stream. The separators also separate the high molecular weight hydrocarbon from
the gas before it enters the Compressor Train unit. The separated liquids are stored in storage
tanks for further processing. Fig 1 shows the overall PFD of the example process.

OBJECTIVES

Create and connect two unit operations through form and icons.
Differentiate phases from PDF feature.
Able to perform a P-T flash in unit operation.

RESULT

Figure 1shows the overall PFD for Separator Trains.

DISCUSSION

One of the first learning objectives is to create and connect two unit operations through forms
and icons. To start and stimulate a separation in HYSYS, the simulation environment must be
initialized. First, all of the individual compounds that will exist in the overall system are
chosen. Then, fluid package that will accurately simulate all compounds in the range of
temperatures and pressures are also chosen. After all of that had been completed, the
simulation environment was entered.

To begin building the process, it is crucial to specify the feed stream that we are
attempting to separate including composition, flow rate, temperature, and pressure of the
stream. Once these parameters are entered, it is then necessary to connect the feed to the
desired separator type and then run the simulation. The first objective was completed.

Next learning objective is to differentiate phases from PFD features. The feed
specifications come from the descriptions of the problem that we are attempting to solve.
Within the feed stream, there are three phases exist, and the composition and flow rate of
each phase will determine the composition and flow rate of the three phases leaving the
separator. As usual, vapours flows upwards, heavy hydrocarbons flows in the middle, while
light hydrocarbons and water flows downwards. To double check the phases that flow out
from separators, HYSYS workbook can be opened to make sure there are no errors. Molar
flow and liquid volume flow for example can be referred to differentiate the phases.

Lastly, the learning objective is to be able to perform P-T flash in unit operation. Flash
(or partial) evaporation is the partial vapour that occurs when a saturated liquid stream
undergoes a reduction in pressure by passing through a throttling valve or other throttling
device. This process is one of the simplest unit operations. If there are only two phases, the
flash separator is sufficient, thought the exact same separation can be simulated with a 3-
phase separator.
WORKSHOP

1. What is the pressure out of M-101 and where does the value comes from?
The pressure coming out from the mixer M-101 is 1136 kPa and the value comes
from the pressure from vapour phases coming out from separator V-101 and
separator V-504.

2. On the Simulation Tree, double-click on the MaterialStream and a form will pop
up. Do you know what the purpose of this form is and how it can help in analysing
your results?
The pop up is to edit the specifications such as mass flow, temperature, pressure,
and to edit the composition of the stream.

3. By analysing your results of the feed streams compositions with the product of
stream 44 and 30, what do you think is the main purpose of separator trains in an
offshore platform?

Stream 44 is vapour phase coming from separator V-101 that is going to gas
compression while stream 30 is oil phase coming from mixer M-104 that is going to
storage tank. The main purpose of separator train is to separate production fluids
into their constituent components of oil, water and gas.
