A
t the risk of sounding trite or
sentimental, I have to say, it
feels good to be home. I
came to Shaarey Zedek with an open
mind and an open heart, not quite
knowing what to expect, but the reception Ive received,
the unwavering support and immeasurable hospitality
has been a true blessing, and I thank you all for making
my transition so easy and special.
The Talmud tells us, shinui makom, shinui mazal,
change your home, change your luck (Maseket Rosh
Hashanah 16b). This concept of changing our destiny
by changing our location in the world has often been
misconstrued as a magical fix-all, and as such, it has

caused a false sense of security and a rejection of
personal responsibility. But is this message in harmony
with our tradition?
Rather than providing us with an exit strategy, the
Talmud is giving us the hope and encouragement that
we so badly need when we arrive at a new chapter of
our lives. When we change our home, we change the

way we see the world. We see new faces, new
landscapes, and a new culture. And regardless of how
desired the move, the bombardment of the new is
invariably overwhelming.
However, with change comes opportunity. Shinui
makom, shinui mazal. By changing our location, we
also change our community, and it is community that
changes our luck, changes our fortune, changes our
lives. My luck is weighed so incredibly favorably by
coming to this great community; a community of
kindness, of passion for Jewish learning, prayer, and
tradition, a community that looks after one another,
celebrating in times of joy, and mourning together in
times of pain and sorrow, a community that is
adamantly and genuinely a family.
It is an honor to now call myself part of this family.
My place has changed, but my luck has never looked
more favorable. Thank you for being the wonderful
people you are, and thank you for welcoming me home.

A
ccording to the Bible (II Samuel
11:1), we are now in the midst
of the season when kings go
off to war. Admittedly, this is a strange
beginning to the summer edition of our
Recorder. The summertime is normally the season in which
we tout our outstanding successes in the areas of adult
education and youth and family experiences. Indeed,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek has been extraordinarily
successful in these endeavors.
This is the season when kings go off to war. Yet the
summertime is normally the season we celebrate our
prayer services. Indeed, our Shabbat morning services
continue to be exceptionally well-attended and those who
have tried our new Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat options
are overjoyed with the spirituality and the music.
We are also extremely excited to welcome the newest
member of our clergy team, Rabbi Yonatan Dahlen. Rabbi
Dahlen is my rabbinic partner and a full member of our
clergy. With his warmth and wisdom, he is here for you
in all aspects of the Jewish lifecycle, for spiritual counsel,
for deep Torah learning, and for Jewish journeying.
Yet, this is the season when kings go off to war. And,
sadly, the summer of 2016 shows us that little has
changed since biblical times. From the shootings in
Orlando and Tel Aviv to the terrorist bombing of the
Istanbul airport, let alone whatever else (God forbid)

happens between me writing this article and it arriving at
your door, our world continues to be threatened by those
who seek to perpetuate evil and tyranny.

RABBINIC REFLECTIONS
As our government does what it needs to do, God
willing, to protect freedom, democracy and peace here
at home and abroad, let us as a congregation come
together to do what we need to do so that love and
righteousness can flourish.
As adults, children, and families, let us come together
to study sacred scripture so that we might bring a day, as
our prayer book articulates, when all who live on earth
shall realize we have not come into being to hate or to
destroy. We have come into being to praise, to labor, and
to love. Let us come together for prayer, that we might
celebrate lifes joys and relieve lifes burdens. At such
times, we are so acutely aware of lifes transience.
Let us come together as one congregational family to
seek a path of spiritual growth and moral reasoning, that
we might fully realize our duty to revere our Creator so
that we can, without exception, fulfill the most sacred of
laws: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. As Hillel
said, this is the Torah and all the rest is commentary.
Bayom hahu: on that day when we have truly come
together for such learning, such prayer, and such
community, then and only then may we call our great
synagogue a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community, and
only then may we shep nachas (feel pride) in our
accomplishments. I look forward to continuing to partner
with you in this holy work, and to continuing to walk with
you on our blessed journey.
