UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Music Ministry has always played a key role
in Lovers Lane United Methodist Churchs
current and past history of dynamic worship,
with great opportunities for spiritual
inspiration and personal growth.
On Sunday, Oct. 20, 1946, the 267 members of
Lovers Lane Methodist Church began worship
services in Wallace Chapel at 5002 West Lovers
Lane. Organ music began to gift the worship
experience in 1948.

This brochure highlights the crucial role the

pipe organ has served and continues to offer in
that foundational priority, not only for regular
worship, but also for special services, concerts,
weddings, and memorial services.

In its history, Lovers Lane has owned seven organs:

AEOLIAN-SKINNER PIPE ORGAN
OPUS 1361 (1960)
Purchased in 1957, and dedicated Dec. 11,
1960, in the sanctuary at 5002 West Lovers
Lane, this organ was stored during the churchs
move to 9200 Inwood Road. It was later
installed on a hydraulic lift in the chancel of the
sanctuary built in 1978, and rededicated, along
with the new Schantz pipe organ, on April
29, 1979. The pipes for this organ are placed
in two free-standing towers on both sides
of the chancel, encased behind a fabric and
wood faade. Both the Aeolian-Skinner in the
chancel and the Schantz organ in the gallery are
playable from each of their respective consoles.

This organ was built and installed by the
Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company, Boston, MA
and J. S. Whiteford. It contains 33 ranks/30
stops (voices), including 1,967 pipes made of
pine, zinc, or tin/lead alloy. Its console has
3 manuals (keyboards): Swell, Choir, and
Great divisions, with 61 keys (notes) each,
and Pedal of 32 keys (notes). Its action is
electro-pneumatic, with Pitman stop action
wind-chests. The expression pedals operate
opening/closing of shades to control dynamics
of louder or softer volume, for Swell and Choir
divisions, as well as a Crescendo pedal, to bring
on gradually more pipe-sounds to full organ
ensemble.
SCHANTZ PIPE ORGAN
OPUS 1454 (1978)
Dedicated on April 29, 1978, and housed in
the sanctuary gallery at 9200 Inwood Road, its
pipes are encased in a free-standing wooden
case at the rear of the balcony, offering an
impressive visual effect when viewed from
below. The flamed copper, horizontally placed
Trumpet en chamade lends a vividly dramatic
aspect to that visual image. The aural effect of
herald trumpet adds excitement to worship
and times of celebration! For the first time
since its installation, each pipe of the Schantz
was thoroughly cleaned in Summer 2016, with
some adjustments to enhance its functionality
and glorious sound.
Built and installed by the Schantz Pipe
Organ Company, it is comprised of 73 ranks
of pipes, with 73 stops/56 voices, including
3,796 pipes, made of pine, zinc, or tin/lead
alloy. Its console has 4 manuals (keyboards),
which play four divisions: Great, Swell, Choir,
and Positiv, of 61 keys (notes) each; and Pedal
of 32 keys (notes).
Its action is Electro-pneumatic with use
of a Pitman action wind chest. It employs
a solid-state combination action memory
system, which enables many combination
pistons for registration changes. Swell and
Choir divisions contain expression pedals, to
effect volume changes, and a Crescendo pedal
activates additional sounds mechanically.
Some draw-knobs are included to activate
selective ranks from the Aeolian-Skinner
instrument on the Schantz console.
CASAVANT PIPE ORGAN
OPUS 3892 (2011)
Consecrated Sept. 18, 2011, in Thomas Joel
Shipp Chapel at 9200 Inwood Road, this organ
was specifically designed for this chapel. Its
22 ranks/18 stops of 1,562 pipes sit behind a
wooden faade of crosses in the chancel area. It
has 2 manuals (or divisions), Great and Swell,
of 61 keys each, and Pedal of 32 keys, with an
Expression Swell pedal to control dynamics
(getting louder and softer on the Swell),
Crescendo pedal to effect additional pipe
sounds, and, like both the Skinner and Schantz
instruments, uses a Pitman valve system.
The completion of this magnificent pipe
organ represents the fulfillment of eight
years of visionary labor and holy anticipation
since the original design phase of this great
instrument. A great tradition occurs each year
on Monday of Holy Week, when our church
organist offers an organ recital as a special
Lenten/pre-Easter message through music,
followed by free luncheon, open to all.

WESLEY CHAPEL ORGAN

A Saville electronic organ was installed in Wesley Chapel at its inception in 1971, supporting
many services. It was later replaced with the current two-manual Rodgers Digital Electronic
instrument of 36 stops/42 ranks.

RODGERS 990 ELECTRIC ORGAN

Dedicated Dec. 5, 1971, in Asbury Hall, the temporary sanctuary at 9200 Inwood Road, this organ
was moved to Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas, then later to Holy Covenant
United Methodist Church in Carrollton, Texas

BALDWIN ELECTRIC ORGAN

The churchs first organ was dedicated Nov. 21, 1948, in Wallace Chapel at 5002 West Lovers
Lane. This was later donated to The Museum of Biblical Art, when the church moved to its present
location on Northwest Highway and Inwood Road.
