Economics Graduate Programs
Economicsexamineshowindividuals,businesses,andsocietiesinteract.Bystudyingeconomics,yougainabetterunderstandingofthe
costsandbenefitsofalternativecoursesofactionandthusmakeinformeddecisions.Decisionmakingskillsarenecessaryinallareasof
theeconomyincludingthegovernmentandbusiness.

Economicsteachesyoutothinkcriticallyandtosolveproblems,skillsthatarehighlyvaluedintheworkplace.Youlearnnotonlyhowto
finddata,buthowtoworkwiththatdataandthenlogicallyexplaininsightsgainedfromtheanalyses.Currentresearchinterestsof
economicsfacultyincludetopicsintechnology,telecommunications,behavioraleconomics,forecasting,environment,labor,health,
internationaltrade,andinternationalfinance.Thediverseskillsandinterestsoftheeconomicsfacultyprovideopportunitiesforlearning
andgrowthtothestudentinourmoderneconomy.

Admission Requirements
AdmissiontotheMSinEconomicDataAnalyticsisbaseduponthecompletionofthegeneraladmissionrequirementsoftheGraduate
AdmissionsOffice.ForadmissiontotheMSEconomicsprogramascoreoneithertheGraduateManagementAdmissionTest(GMAT)or
theGraduateRecordExamination(GRE)andrecordofonesacademicundergraduateperformancearerequired.Studentsforwhom
EnglishisnottheirnativelanguagemustmeetlanguagestandardssetbyUTAontheTOEFLorIELTS.Internationalapplicantswho
scorebelowminimumacceptablelevelsontheverbalportionofentranceexaminationsmaybeadmittedundertheconditionthatthey
passanEnglishproficiencyexamorcompleteUTArlingtonsGraduateEnglishSkillsProgrampriortobeginninggraduatecoursework.
Applicantsareencouragedtosubmitwiththeirapplicationaresumethathighlightsprofessionalandpersonalaccomplishments,
linguisticabilities,computerexpertise,andleadershipexperience.Astandardizedtestscore(GMATorGRE)willnotbeusedasthesole
criterionforadmittingapplicantsortheprimarycriterionfordenyingadmissiontotheMSinEconomicDataAnalyticsprogram.

TheGRE/GMATtestrequirementforadmissionstotheM.S.inEconomicDataAnalyticsprogramcan,underextraordinary
circumstances,bewaivedatthediscretionofthedepartmentiftheapplicantalreadyhasbeenawardedaterminalgraduatedegreefrom
aregionallyorprofessionallyaccreditedprogram.Waiverofthisrequirementisrareandwillonlybemadeatthediscretionofthe
Department.

Multiplecriteriaareusedtomakeadmissiondecisions.

1.Abachelorsdegreefromanaccreditedgeneralorspecificprogram.
2.AnacceptableundergraduateGPAascalculatedbyGraduateAdmissions(approximatelythelast60hours),generallygreaterthan
a3.0ona4.0scale.
3.AnacceptablescoreontheGREorGMAT.Successfulstudentsgenerallyhaveaminimumscoreof148(600oldGREscale)onthe
quantitativesectionand150(450oldGREscale)ontheverbalsectionoftheGREoraminimumscoreof480ontheGMAT.
4.Gradesinspecifiedundergraduatebusinessandnonbusinesscourses(e.g.,math,accounting,economics,statistics).

UNCONDITIONALADMISSION
Studentsreceivingunconditionaladmissionmusthaveabachelorsdegreefromanaccreditedprogram.Unconditionaladmittancewill
begrantedtoanapplicantwhomeetsoneofthesestandardsbelow:

1.Unconditionaladmissionwillbegrantediftheapplicantscompositetotalfromtheindex(thisindexisderivedbyusingaformula
thatmultipliestheGPAby200andaddstheresultingvaluetotheGMATscore)mustbe1080orgreater.

2.Unconditionaladmittancewillbegrantediftheapplicant'sscores148orhigherontheQuantitativesectionand150orhigheron
theVerbalsectionoftheGREandtheapplicant'sundergraduateGPA,ascalculatedbyGraduateAdmissionsisat,orabove3.0on
a4pointscale.
PROBATIONARYADMISSION
Ifapplicantsdonotmeetthestandardslistedforunconditionaladmission,theymaybeconsideredforprobationaryadmissionafter
carefulexaminationoftheirapplicationmaterials.ProbationaryadmissionrequiresthatanapplicantearnaGPAof3.0orbetterinthe
twosemestersofgraduatecourseworkatUTArlington.

DEFERREDANDPROVISIONALADMISSION
Adeferredapplicationdecisionmaybegrantedwhenafileisincompleteorwhenadenieddecisionisnotappropriate.Anapplicant
unabletosupplyallrequireddocumentationpriortotheadmissiondeadlinebutwhomotherwiseappearstomeetadmission
requirementsmaybegrantedprovisionaladmission.

DENIALOFADMISSION
Afterathoroughreviewoftheapplicationfile,acandidatemaybedeniedadmissionifheorshehaslessthansatisfactoryperformance
onanytwooftheadmissioncriteria.Allapplicantdatawillbecarefullyreviewedbeforeanadmissiondenialismade.

FELLOWSHIPSANDSCHOLARSHIPS
Studentsadmittedwithnoprovisionalconditionstosatisfyareeligibleforavailablescholarshipand/orfellowshipsupport.Alimited
numberofmeritbasedscholarshipsandfellowshipsmaybeawardedtograduatestudentscurrentlyenrolledwhomeettheminimum
requirements.

Degree Requirements
MSinEconomicDataAnalytics

TheMSinEconomicDataAnalyticsprogramfocusesonthemajorgrowthareaofdataanalytics.HalVarian,chiefeconomistatGoogle,
hasexplainedwhythedemandfordataanalysisisgrowingrapidly.Organizationshavelowcostcomputertime,hugequantitiesofdata,
andaccesstosoftwaretoolsthatallowdataanalysis.Theprobleminusingtheseassetsisashortageofqualifiedempiricalanalysts.
Onemustknowhowtofinddata,becriticalofit,developitbyuseofsoftwarepackages,andexplainwhathasbeenlearnedbyanalysis
throughthelensofeconomictheory.Advancesineconometricsanalysisallowustobetterunderstandkeyissues,suchaspricingand
cost,inventorymanagement,populationtrends,andotherissuesthatimpactbusinessandgovernment.

ThefocusoftheMSinEconomicDataAnalyticsprogramisonquantitativeanalysisbasedoneconomiclogic.Itisa10course,30hour
programhighlyfocusedondevelopmentofrelevanteconomictheoryandempiricaltoolsneededbysuccessfulanalysts.

empiricalskillsrequiredtoeffectivelyextract/scrapedatafromthewebandvariousprivateandpublicsources,andcarefullyanalyzeitto
uncoverpatterns/trends,andanswersignificantdatadrivenreallifequestions,relevanttobothlocalandglobalenvironments.The
programprovidesourstudentswithanunderstandingofissuesinvolvedinoperatinginanydataenvironmentandequipsthemwith
skillsneededtoanalyzeavarietyofdataandpresentresearchfindingsinreports.

TheMSinEconomicDataAnalyticsprogramparticipatesinboththeFastTrackandFacilitatedAdmissionprogramsforUTArlington
undergraduates.
