Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Bacteria Flyers

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9-10
Content Standard Addressed:
SB4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the organization of interacting systems
within single-celled and multi-celled organisms.
a. Construct an argument supported by scientific information to explain patterns in structures and function
among clades of organisms, including the origin of eukaryotes by endosymbiosis.
b. Analyze and interpret data to develop models (i.e., cladograms and phylogenetic trees) based on patterns
of common ancestry and the theory of evolution to determine relationships among major groups of
organisms.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Lesson idea implementation:

After discussing as a class, the relation between structure and function in organisms and going over
what makes prokaryotic organisms unique, the class will do a short project using Microsoft Word to showcase
an organism. This assignment will only take 1-2days, or could be used as a homework assignment. Students
will choose bacteria or an archean to study more in-depth with special focus on any special adaptations that
make it better suited to the environment it lives in. Students will then use a Word template for a flyer to
create a short summary of their organism. Each flyer will contain basic information about the organism like its
environment, scientific name, and a phylogenetic tree that describes where the bacteria fits into a genus.
There should also be a section devoted to one special adaptation (organelle, unique process, etc) and how
this allows the organism to thrive in the specific environment it lives in. Students will also be expected to
provide source for information and pictures.
This assignment will allow students to show their knowledge of the productivity software as well as
their understanding or structure and function. Since students are creating a flyer this assignment is at the
highest Blooms level, and shows that students understand and can identify the concepts discussed in class.
This also allows students to master searching the internet for relevant information and citing their sources.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
This assignment will be graded on the presentation of the content, the presence of all required information,
as well as how well put together the flyer is in terms of pictures, diagrams, and color. Feedback will be given
through traditional grading system.
