REVIEW QUESTIONS STEEL FRAMING

Question 1.
What is a portal frame and what are its benefits as a structural solution in support of architectural
design and project brief response?

Question 2.
Structural steel offers a number of benefits as a construction element; however, it also has a number of
disadvantages. Discuss two of these disadvantages including an example of what design responses may
be appropriate to overcome these in the use of steel as a construction element.

Question 3.
Atelier RaDD ask your advice on another design for an exposed steel, post and beam framed
residential building with glass cladding on all four sides. They are unsure of how to maintain the
stability of the structure. Their design intent is for uninterrupted views from floor to ceiling with the
minimum number of columns. Provide two options for the framing system, one which would provide
them with their design intent on all sides and the other, which would provide the design intent on only
two sides but which would potentially be a cheaper system. Annotated sketches may be used to
illustrate your answer.

Question 4.
Sketch a rigid connection between a steel beam and a steel column support. Identify in the sketch and
then explain the critical features that make it a rigid connection. Include in your explanation the
relevance of moment and shear in this connection type.

Question 5.
Explain why it is better to use boxed or tubular steel column members in a two-way rigid structural steel
frame system. Include a sketch of the steel framing system, demonstrating in the sketch the benefits of
the system as a structural solution.

Question 6.
The image is a construction photograph of a
factory/warehouse project. The building incorporates a
combination of load bearing precast concrete and
structural steel framing. Provide two detailed
explanations to justify the use of structural steel as load
bearing elements in this building.

In the image the central columns are 200UC80s and the

outer columns are 530UB82s. What do these
designations mean and why have these different column
types been used in the building?

Question 7.
You are documenting a new project and it is proposed that the roof purlins be cold-formed Z10015
sections. What does cold formed Z10015 mean and why might it be considered that the Z-section be a
better roof framing solution than a cold formed C-section?

Question 8.
In the lecture it was explained that there are three basic steel framing systems. Match the basic framing
system that best suits the steel framed building below. Explain the features of the system as utilised to
support the design intent of each of the buildings.

Question 9.
Sketch and explain the following steel designations provide an example of where each would be used
in a building: 125PFC, EA100x10, 200UC46, 76CHS, 310UB46, 90x90x2.5SHS.
