PREPARATION FOR LESSONS 13-14 (Oct 25-27)) : The standard English debate (Thomas, 1999)

TURMA B: 18-20 (Tues/Thurs)

In these classes you will be giving individual presentations to each other in groups of three on one
particular section of The standard English debate (Thomas, 1999 see document in material de apoio).
For this reason it is absolutely vital that you come to class having read and thoroughly prepared your
relevant section only and no other part of the chapter (see the lists below). You need to prepare a set of
notes to present from (i.e. not grammatically complete sentences but rather bullet points with keywords,
etc). This is important in order to ensure that you have tried to put the text into your own words as far as
possible and that you do not simply read out chunks of the original text. You will also need to make sure
you teach key terms and vocabulary from your section to your colleagues. You may also want to make a
note of any direct quotes from the text you consider to be worth quoting in full.

You will notice that your section has a number of reader activities. Obviously, you should do these and
also allow time in your presentations for your colleagues to do them. You can then lead the feedback
discussion around each activity.

I will ensure that there is ample time for you to compare your notes and clarify your understanding of the
text with colleagues who have read the same section as you. After that, you will be placed in groups of
three (i.e. one student each from groups A, B and C below). Each student will present their section, you
will all complete the various reader activities, and then you can discuss the presentation, clarifying your
understanding and raising points for discussion. Given the variety of language backgrounds in the class, it
would be interesting if you could reflect upon your own experiences with regard to standard and non-
standard varieties in your own first-language, as well as exploring your own subject positions as non-
native speakers in relation to standard English.

And just a reminder: read your section only. If you read the entire chapter before the class, the whole
point of this activity will be undermined. You give a presentation to colleagues as the relative expert
on your particular section.
