Personal Statement

I hail from a comparatively backward region of my country. Considering its suitable climate,
abundance of water and other resources including cheap labor, central location and therefore
easy connectivity, the region has immense potential to become the industrial hub of the nation.
But hitherto the picture has been dismal and gloomy. I wish to change this scenario by
contributing in the industrial growth of my region and thus my nation. In the wake of
globalization, India has developed a behemoth and impressive IT industry in its own backyard by
collaborating with developed world particularly United States. But other legs of the economy
like manufacturing and agriculture sectors do not fare well and need a kick start which can be
provided by emulating the progress model of United States. The amount of time and money
devoted to research and development in US is simply unexceptionable. Equally unparalleled is
the education system based on appropriate mix of theoretical as well as practical skills. I aspire
to be a part of such a splendid and exemplary set of things and would consider myself successful
in my life if I could just carry this back to my country and contribute in illuminating the lives of
my very own people. This school of thought inspires me to pursue graduate studies where I can
move from broad curriculum to more specific and advanced. I strongly believe that it is only
graduate studies and experience afterwards will give me exact direction pertaining to my goal.
I wish to connect the advanced techniques and skills which I will study in my masters course to
the existing set of things in my country and improve the efficiency of the output. I would like to
work particularly in the fields like agriculture and non-conventional energy systems. Ours
economy is an agrarian economy with a major portion of workforce engaged in agro-based
activities. But relative output is on the lower side due to obsolete techniques still employed.
Similar is the case with energy production. With the advent of Bio-fuels and Solar, Wind and
Tidal power, it is imperative to focus on non-conventional renewable energy production
recognizing ever-increasing energy requirements. I wish to integrate my field of study with these
basic sectors directly affecting the economy not only nationally but also globally. I wish to start
with an integrated agro-based industry employing the cutting-edge technology with the long term
aim of working in the domain of economical and fully self-sustainable farming-cum-living areas.
I have deep interest in areas pertaining to Operations Research, particularly fields involving
application of Dynamic Programming, Linear and Non Linear Programming and Decision
Making. I am also interested in fields like Ergonomics, Lean Manufacturing, Supply Chain
Management and Financial Engineering.
I filled no option other than Industrial and Production Engineering in my undergraduate
counseling process and reason is crystal clear, I found no other branch of engineering more
versatile than this. A befitting blend of mechanical, industrial, production and management
subjects have helped me build a solid platform on a wide range of topics. I studied Production
subjects including Metal Cutting, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing, Metal Casting
and Metal Joining. Simultaneously, I learned Industrial subjects like Production and Operation
management, Industrial Inspection and Ergonomics. This curriculum has made me equally
proficient in technical subjects like Solid Mechanics, Theory of Machines, Design of Machine
Elements, Prime Movers and Pumps and Fluids and Thermodynamics on the one hand as well as
practical subjects like Operations Research, Engineering Economics and Financial Management
on the other. Subjects nourishing interdisciplinary skills like Object Oriented Programming,
Mechatronics and Basic Electronics have added to the versatility as well as utility of the course
which I opted for.
I would like to go for PhD but before that I would like to accrue a good amount of experience of
working in the industry.
Throughout my schooling I stood first in every class. I got 92.6% marks in 10th standard board
examination and was among the toppers in the whole region. I developed strong concepts in
Math as well as Science and always performed brilliantly in them. For this reason I got 373th
rank in National Science Olympiad 2007. In college also, I have tried my level best to maintain
my performance. I am among the toppers in my class with average CGPA of 7.36. Apart from
first year in the college, which was a hiccup in my smooth and steady performance graph, I have
cruised quite well and successfully throughout my educational career.
I have undergone major industrial training at Porwal Auto Components Pvt. Ltd., Pithampur
(India). It is one of the prominent casting plants in Central India. There I completed a project on
Time Study and Line Balancing. It was an intensive training program where I also worked on
Sequencing, Inspection and Quality Control. I have done my minor industrial training at Volvo
Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd., Pithampur (India) in the gearbox manufacturing unit. Training
was focused on Inventory Control and Reliability testing. I have done another minor industrial
training at GRM Engineers Pvt. Ltd., Halol (India). It was about Production and Purchase
planning. Currently I am working on a project on biogas. It involves cost estimation and
feasibility analysis of portable biogas plants.

I have always actively participated in extra-curricular activities. In sports, I play football,

volleyball and table tennis. In fact, I was the captain of school football as well as volleyball team.
We won numerous awards and trophies, Sports Council of All Indian Public Schools Football
Trophy being the most important one. Apart from sports, I have also participated in various
debates, extempore and essay writing competitions in both English and Hindi and won several of
them. I have also played roles in various skits and dramas in school as well as college.
I am also dedicating 6 hours of teaching per week at a local education consulting where I teach
Math to GRE/GMAT/SAT students. I definitely believe that this experience may help take up
some additional responsibilities at graduate school such as teaching UG students for SAT or
Math at the university.
Personally, nothing matters to me more than humanity. It has been my endeavor that I come out
to be an excellent person in the life that I lead. Traits like honesty, diligence, relationship
building and philanthropy have been imbibed deeply into me since childhood. Even though
having tasted success in numerous occasions and instances, the most important trait that I have
learnt is humility.
Having done a lot of research about your university , I have been led to believe that this institute
is great not only because of the finest brains which reside here, but more because of the ethos of
the place, the traditions and culture of being the crme-de-la crme of the world and yet
maintaining the spirit of the institution. When I wished that I would study in this great institute, I
weighed my academic prowess, my extracurricular achievements and other talents against the
criteria of the school; but in due course I understood that it was not just the above said qualities
which are required to get you an admission into such an institute, it is what you are made up of.
Pursuing MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Ohio State University seems to provide
me with an unparalleled exposure to the field of my interest. Work done by eminent faculty
members speaks to me and I can assure you that I share their enthusiasm for their respective
areas of research and expertise. The research work carried out by Dr. Ramteen Sioshansi on
analysis of renewable energy highly interests me. . If provided with guidance, I am confident that
I would expand my research horizons and can work systematically in this field. Research
interests of Dr. Marc E. Posner in environmental sustainability and Dr. Guzin Bayraksan in
Optimization Methodology and applications in Water Resources Management and Infrastructure
Systems also intersect my passions. I am eager to work on practical applications of simulation,
optimization and other operations research based methods particularly in the environmental,
energy based or agriculture based systems. I am highly attracted towards potential research
centers at the university like Institute for Ergonomics and Center for Resilience. While Institute
for Ergonomics uses real world problems as the basis for R&D in determining physical and
cognitive capabilities and limitations of people to ensure proper designs of work environments
and products, Center for Resilience applies interdisciplinary approach to improve the resilience
of products and processes in energy, transportation and agriculture industries. I realize being part
of such research oriented centers would make my studies at OSU highly rewarding.

So, my salute to the ethos of your institution, I am of the same sand

same finesse, same character lets join our hand!
Looking forward to see you on campus in coming fall!!
Thank You
