People say a leader should have loyalty as a quality. A leader is defined as someone that is loyal
to their crew, trustworthy, and brave. In the literary work The Odyssey by Homer the reader is introduced
to Odyssey. Odysseus isnt the best leader. Odysseus is from Ithaca who left his home to go to Troy for
war. Odysseus after the war ended up on a journey that lasted years for him to get home.Odysseus has
flaws, he doesn't tell his me about their deaths, he always talks about his fame, and he blames his crew
Odysseus isnt a great leader he isnt considered a great leader because he just lets his men die.
Odysseus didnt explore with his men, in the Lotus Eaters it says Then I sent out two chosen men and
a runner to learn what sustain the island. (Homer 39-40) This example shows how Odysseus lets his men
die because of two men were eaten by the creatures on the island. Odysseus is a leader that sacrifices his
men in order to survive. This example shows greatly how he sacrifices his men for his benefit. In addition
Odysseus learns about the death of his men and and does not share with the rest of crew. Odysseus knew
he would lose men but didn't care, Better to mourn six men than lose them all. (Homer 705-706) This is
a good example on how he doesn't care about his men because he wasn't truthful and loyal. In addition
Odysseus didn't tell his men about their adventure. What could be understood is Odysseus was a deceitful
leader.
A great leader should not be egotistical. A self absorbed leader would not have the qualities of a
great leader. Odysseus learned he would survive but that his soldiers wouldnt, But if you raid the
beeves, I see destruction for the ship and crew, though you will survive. (Homer 705-708) Odysseus
learned of their deaths but would continue to raid the land. He was selfish by not communicating with
crew. Furthermore, Odysseus wanted to leave course but his men wanted to stay. Odysseus went off
Sotelo 2
course while his crew insisted to stay and reach Ithica. This shows how a greedy leader doesn't care about
his crew. The quality of a leader should not be self-centered. Readers now know that Odysseus was a self-
obsessed leader.
Odysseus speaks very highly of himself and not of his crew. A leader should give credit to his
crew and not himself. Odysseus in this story says his fame is huge he says, Men hold me formidable for
peace and war this fame has gone abroad to sky's rim. (Homer 6-8) Odysseus says his fame is known by
all in the world. He does not give acknowledgement to his crew who helped him along the way.
Additionally, Odysseus blames his crew instead of taking responsibility. Odysseus sounds desperate and
frustrated when he says his hardships, What shall a man find sweetness to surpass his own home and
parents. (Homer 24-25) Odysseus is a bitter leader because he says what shall he do for sweetness. He
isn't always satisfied with what he has in front of him. This goes back to how he is an inconsiderate leader
Some may say Odysseus is a tremendous leader. However, he has many flaws like selfishness,
untrustworthy and accuses others of his flaws as a ruler. The point still is Odysseus isn't the a good
quality leader that many would want to be apart of. In the end of the story it shows the good and bad
qualities of a leader. In all a leader shouldn't accuse others of his failures and his mistakes and his
indecisiveness, instead should take responsibility for his own actions, decisiveness and integrity.
