The novel that I read was Dear Mr Kilmer by Anne Schraff.

The event that I find

unforgettable is the unfair treatment towards the Schermers. I would like to explain why I feel
this event is unforgettable to me.
Firstly, I dont like to be called bad names. In the story, Hannahs schoolmates called her
Dirty Hun. They even scribbled Dirty Hun all over her book cover. Unfortunately, some
Turtle Lake people believed that Huns were a barbaric clan originated from Germany. Do you
like it if people start calling you Dirty Malay/Chinese/Indian? This is just childish and extremely
immature and thats why I find it unforgettable.

Secondly, I dont like when my loyalty towards my country being questioned. Some
Turtle Lakes residents said that the Schermers were unpatriotic because they spoke German and
served Hun food at their tavern while a war was going on against Germany. To make it worst,
their tavern was vandalized by some irresponsible people of the community which I considered
as completely uncivilised. So, lets get this straight. If I were a Malaysian Chinese and I am
selling Chinese food. Does this mean I am not a loyal citizen of Malaysia just because I sell the
food? The answer is no. I am still a blue-eyed Malaysian. Besides that, Hannahs brother Otto
was serving in the Army to fight Germany. Therefore, this accusation is totally baseless and
ridiculous. And thats why I think it is unforgettable.

Thirdly, I think we should stand for what is right although everyone goes against
you. We can see this when Mrs Hansen asked her class to sign a sympathy card for the
Schermers. Richard was the only student who signed the sympathy card for Hannah Schermer
and sent it to the family personally. The troublemakers like Abner, Harry, Blanche and Peggy
refused to sign the card. On top of it, they warned other classmates not to sign the card. This is
just wrong and Richard had shown a great example to stay genuinely righteous despite all the
unfair treatment towards the Schermers by others. This attitude is very much commendable and
makes me find the event is unforgettable.

In conclusion, although the Schermers was mistreated by some Turtle Lake people, they
remained calm and patient.
