A Journal of John Cabot

This is the journal of John Cabot. My name is Giovanni Caboto but later was
changed to John Cabot. Im an Italian sailor, explorer and merchant. I was born in
Genoa, Italy in 1450. Giulio Caboto, my father was a spices merchant. When I was
eleven years old I had moved to Venice with my family. I helped my family with
the trading spice business and been taught on cartography, navigation, astronomy,
mathematics, and seamanship. In 1474, I married with the most beautiful woman I
have ever seen who named Mattea. Later on, I became a father of three sons. My
first son name is called Ludovico, second son is called Sancto, and third son is
called Sebastiano. Three of them are all handsome. Sebastiano my third son was
really like me, he followed what I have done and becoming an explorer in his own
right. Early year came I obtained a Venetian citizenship and naturalized on 28
March, 1476 and began to trading. Then I moved to the sea port of Bristol in
England because of the financial problems.

In 1469, I have received letters from King Henry VII to seek an island and
countries of the heathens toward the west, east, and north sailing under the English
flag. In early May of 1497, I was left from England to begin my first journey on
the Matthew, a fast and able ship weighing 50 tons with a crew of 18 men, the
finest weaponry available, and an abundance of DVDs for an entertainment. On the
ship was also included an unnamed Burgundian, a Genoese barber who
presumably accompanied the expedition as the ships surgeon, two Bristol
merchants, and Bristol sailors. We sailed to the west and north under which I
believed that it was the route to Asia and it might be shorter from northern Europe
than Columbuss voyage but the thing was we were landed on the east coast of
North America which is called the New world either called Cape Breton Island or
Labrador. After we landed, I went to explore around the island. I investigated
nothing even a person who lived there so, I just place a flag on the islands because
I decided to take a possession for expanding the reign of King Henry VII. After I
put a flag down on that island, then we return back to England with achieved great
fame and glory. I was given a gift of 10 pounds for found the new island and
granted a pension of 20 pounds a year from King Henry VII also he made me
dressed in a nice expensive silk.

After 28 years later in late 1497, I have a proposed to King Henry VII to set
out on a second expedition with some amount of money. On the second route, I
went to explore with five ships and a crew of 300 men for aiming to discover Japan
but the truth was I sailed across the north Atlantic near to the coast of Greenland.
Some of the ships were carrying some goods, including cloth, caps, lace points,
food for the entire ships member and other stuffs. Next, on July 25, we fleet
headed to the north then sailed along the east coast of Newfoundland which is now
America. In the middle way of our route we caught in a huge storm, one of the
ships straight to an Irish port for repairs which it was damage by a huge storm,
many people were getting hurts and some were get lost into the ocean and the rest
four ships were continued the journey across the Atlantic. As we continued further
and further north the sailing conditions became increasingly difficult. The main
problem for our ships was the cold weather because our ships were designed for
sailing in warmer water. At that time, I caught a fever from the unstable weather on
each hard day. On my own time, I studied and sketched the second route out on to
a paper also the floor of ship and having a small discussion with other crews. A
day later, I have some problems with the crews on my ship. They didnt listen and
refused to continue to the route that I planned on the first time. I had no choices
because that time I was very sick too. So, I follow them along way near the South
coast of Greenland and crossed the Davis Strait on to Baffin Land on to
Newfoundland and followed the coast Nova Scotia and New England. A week later
we were stop at some part of North America. Next, I explored the unknown island
again and adding some more details to my sketch route map. Then, we moved to
another place down to the south. Suddenly, I met the group of Spanish which they
were having the same goal as us but they didnt know anything much about the
land. We have a short conservation on the island that we met. As the conversation
finished I felt like they want to know more about the island. Moreover, as I was
very sick I thought I wouldnt like to continue my boss mission so, I decided to sell
my own sketch map to them with the amount money of 5 pounds. They agreed
with my offer and continued to explore from what I have done. Later on, I left all
my crews with the Spanish and I stopped to be an explorer at that point. Finally, I
started my life again then I wrote a letter to my family at Bristol telling that I wont
get back to England anymore and invited them to stay with me for the rest of my
life.
