QUESTION 1

A highway is being planned to be built across 5 km of marine clay area with the possibility of
settlement to occur in future as shown in above diagram.

i) Propose the most suitable method of soil improvement if there is a possibility of


settlement at this area. Justify the reasons of your proposal.

ii) Describe the method of soil improvement that you have proposed.

QUESTION 2

Landslides are a natural phenomenon and are very common in Malaysia. This may range
from small localize incident to more serious ones. Human activities may engrave the
problem further. Referring to the above diagram:

i) Discuss the the landslide prevention and control at this area.


(40 marks)

ii) Propose a suitable slope stabilization method for the above project and explain
the method of construction.
(60 marks)
QUESTION 3:

A road embankment requires 600,000 m of compacted earth. Required excavation


produces 250,000 m and another 100,000 m from nearby borrow pit.

Relating to the above:

i) Calculate the estimated quantity of earth that is required to be imported to


complete the embankment. Assume wastage is not considered and the
shrinkage factor is 0.8 and the bulking factor is 1.2.

ii) Prepare an earthwork method statement.


(100 marks)

iii) Prepare a work programme and cost of earthwork.


(60 marks)
