HYDROELECTRIC MODEL

By : Aom, Bob, Chili, Dada, Seen, Sooyoung

What is Hydroelectricity?
Hydroelectric relating to or denoting
the generation of electricity using
flowing water to drive a turbine that
powers a generator.

Hydropower or Hydroelectric has been

used since ancient times to grind flour
and perform other tasks.
In the mid-1770s, French engineer Bernard Forest de Blidor
published Architecture Hydraulique which described
vertical- and horizontal-axis hydraulic machines.

By the late 19th century, the electrical generator was developed

and could now be coupled with hydraulics.
Introduction
Goal : use water resource and kinetic energy to
create electricity

Products : Water pump and water turbine

Electricity = Hydroelectricity (Hydro = water)

Objective : What this project gives
Know how to apply Physics knowledge to daily life
situation

Electric circuit knowledge is very important to

this project because both water pump and water
turbine need electric circuit in order to make the
system start and work.
Student become more familiar with the method and
process of how water pump and water turbine work.
Gives a chance for students to be creative and learn
to fix problem with their knowledge.
Students will gain an experience and learn things
that can not be taught in the class.

Method
Housing Structures

- Make sure that them system is placed in a container that is

able to withhold large amount of water.
- Measure the pump size as well as the turbines size
- Popsicle sticks are then measured and cut into small pieces
relevant to the pump and the turbine
- Attach* the sticks into structures as the drawn model
designs.
- Make a hard base for both motors.
- Make pipes, to be able to hold the base against the container

*Advised to use Gluegun at first then proceed using Silicon.

Circuits

- Connecting the adapter socket circuit to the switch with one

rod
- Connect the pumps circuit to the other rod of the switch
- Attach water hose at the end and the beginning of the pump

Placements

- The pump and the turbine must be in different heights,

therefore marking the destined area would be good.(Pump on
the top and turbine at the bottom.)
- Place both motors in their designed house
- Glue the pipe with the base then the other side of the pipe
with the container.
- Fill in water and some decorations, TA-DAAA!
Discussion of design
-inspired by hydroelectric dam

-Thai style house = high platform

-We put the water pump at the top, and put the water turbine
lower, then we run the water down to generates the
electricity by the water turbine.
Discussion of physics concept
Renewable energy

-Renewable energy is energy that is generated from natural

processes that are continuously replenished. This includes
sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, tides, water, and various
forms of biomass. This energy cannot be exhausted and is
constantly renewed.

Electrical Wiring

-An electrical circuit is a closed course through which

electricity continuously flows from a source through a hot
wire to the device to be powered and then back to the source
again through a neutral wire. Wiring may be routed in any of
several different ways.
Discussion of physics concept
3 Types of Wiring

1. Parallel Wiring- Several devices are powered on a single circuit.

2. Switch Wiring- Switches, which are installed on hot wires, allow

or disallow the flow of current to a light or other device.

3. Series Wiring- Series wiring routes the hot wire through several
devices and then joins the neutral wire, which leads back to the
source.

Hydroelectric power

Hydro energy is available in many forms, potential energy from high

heads of water retained in dams, kinetic energy from current flow in
rivers and tidal barrages, and kinetic energy also from the movement
of waves on relatively static water masses.
Recommendation
- Next time, we will change the material that use to build a model
house to be waterproof because from the trial the material that
we use are all broken due to the water splashes.
- Use softer and more flexible water hose, because it is easier to
adjust the angle.
- Use longer connecting rod that connect to the turbine, because if
we use the short one the water will leak and get into the
turbine.
- Change the glue, we want a glue that waterproof and can stick
better.
- We will adapt and make our water pump more effective and to be
able to use the electrical power that had created in highest
potential.
Conclusion
The water which is falling has potential energy, the falling
water which has kinetic energy hits the turbine to produce
electric energy. We can make sure that this process works by
noticing that the light bulb that is connected to the
turbine glows, so we can conclude that our project is
successful.
