Possible Misconceptions: Teacher(s) Name: Aydin Targil

Grade: 11- Pre-Calculus

Lesson: Exponential Functions

Content Area: Mathematics Pre-Calculus

Description/Abstract of Lesson: Students will learn the concept of exponential functions, the main
logic of exponential growth or increase ,they will learn how to represent exponential growth as a
formula, and how to draw their graphs.

Timeline of Lesson: 90-minute period.

Lesson Plan Type Inquiry/problem-solving

Texas State Standards:

2.F: graph exponential, logarithmic, rational, polynomial, power, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric,
and piecewise defined functions, including step functions.

5.I: generate and solve exponential equations in mathematical and real-world problems.

Content Strand: Pre-Calculus

Students will recognize, use, and represent exponential patterns, relations, and

functions.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

a) explore and extend a pattern;(exponential)

b) complete a data table that describes how the pattern is changing;

c) determine and write a function rule for the relationship found in the data table;

d) graph the exponential function; and

Pre-requisites:

Students need to know the properties of multiplication of numbers with exponents.

Students may have confusion about adding powers in multiplication of numbers with exponents, since it
is a multiplication they can multiply the exponents also ,where they should add them .At this point
teacher should stress it several times with questioning whether it is addition or multiplication for
powers.
Assessment Evidence

1.Pre-Assessment: A diagnostic quiz in the beginning of the lesson will be given to the students to see
the misconceptions of students coming from previous years and those misunderstandings will be tried
to cleared by discussing about the answers just after the quiz together.

2. Post-assessment: A post-assessment quiz (Lesson Quiz) will be held that is similar to pre-assessment
quiz. Students need to solve the questions with more than 80% accuracy to meet the primary objective.
The results of the post assessment quiz will be compared to pre-assessment quiz results. If the same
mistakes are done by the majority of the class a quick review will be done before class ends or at the
beginning of next class..

1.Introduction of Content: I will start my lesson asking them to choose two different job payment
options
a.Getting $10.000 per month
or
b. Getting 1 cent for first day,and doubling the money everyday

Students will be asked which option to choose

And their guess about the final money in option b after one month.
.
The answers will be collected on board and then the Then Magic Penny problem worksheet
will be passed to students with calculator and 20 minutes will be given to students to calculate
the amount of the money after one month with starting 1 cent.

2. Practiceguided or independent: The whole class instruction. Students may get ideas
from theirpairs near to them.Every student should do the practice work individually, since at the end of
great effort of calculations they will see that there is a shorter way. Some students will notice it and they
will stop doing calculations for every day and they will generalize a quicker way which will be named as
exponential function later .
After giving time to students around 20 minutes the answers of students will be asked individually and
asked to make comments about the huge amount.A discussion will be held for five minutes, students
will be guided to name this situation to discover to define exponential function and exponential growth.

Next step two short videos will be shown to students about exponential growth:

1. The legend of chessboard and rice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3d0Y-JpRRg

2. Powers of 10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CKd0aPSWe8

Students will be asked to write a paragraph about the videos.

A worksheet will be passed which is about to find the money amount for the given day numbers
a. If they double their money each day

b. If they triple their money each day

c. If they make they money ten times more each day

With working these questions they will improve their exponential growth understanding better with
different multiples .

After that students will be guided to name the functions in a,b,,c as 2^x,3^x,10^x

3. Closure: Students will summarize their understandings in a short paragraph and write the functions
they used throughout the worksheet.

1. Extensions/Enrichment: Students will individual work ,but they can discuss with their peers. As
homework students will be asked to find other examples from real life similar to the videos seen in
class.Students will be encouraged to ask the magic penny problem at least to 3 people and collect their
answers and bring to class,so that the next class all classes dat will be collected and graphed.

2. Technology Integration Calculators will be used by the students to complete their operations with
100% accuracy. Computer and projector will be used by the teacher to screen the content while
teaching.
