PART B (5 16 = 80 marks)

11. (a) A damped free vibration test is conducted to determine the dynamic
properties of a one storey building. The mass of the building is
10,000 kg.
Initial displacement of the building is 0.702 cm. maximum
displacement on the first cycle is 0.53 cm. and period of this

displacement cycle is 1.73. Determine the effective weight, undamped
frequency, logarithmic decrement, damping ratio, damping co-
efficient, damped frequency and the amplitude after 6 cycles.

(b) (i) Explain the important points from transmissibility curves. Draw
neat curve. (8)
(ii) An SDOF system consists of a mass of 20 kg, a spring of
stiffness
2.2 kN/m and a dash pot with a damping co-efficient of 60
N.s/m is subjected to a harmonic excitation of F = (200 sin 5t.)
N. Write the complete solution of the equation of motion. (8)

Live load : 140 kN
Weight of terrace floor : 660 kN
The structure is resting on hard rock. Determine the total base and
lateral loads at each floor levels for 5% damping using seismic co-
efficient method.
