Example 4
Design a simply supported beam of 7m span carrying a reinforced concrete floor
capable of providing lateral restraint to the top compression flange. The total udl is made up
of 100 kN dead load including self weight plus 150 kN imposed load. In addition, the beam
carries a point load at mid span made up of 50kN dead load and 50kN imposed load.
(Assuming a stiff bearing length of 75mm)
Step 1: Calculation of factored load
Udl:
Dead load = 1.5 x 100 = 150kN
Live load = 1.5 x 150 = 225 kN
Total udl acting on the beam = 375 kN
Concentrated load:
Dead load = 1.5 x 50 = 75 kN
Live load = 1.5 x 50 = 75kN
Total concentrated load acting on the beam = 150 kN
Step 2: Calculation of maximum bending moment
