CURS 4 2017
1. Consider the following questions (in pairs): Is there any way of knowing if someone is
depressed? How do you recognise depression?
2. Draw two columns on the board headed Actions and Words. What do you think a
depressed person may say or do? Make notes in the appropriate columns.
3. Read and translate the following text:
Depression is a brain disorder that can lead to much emotional anguish. Changes in
how your brain functions also can have a big effect on your body. Is it any wonder, then,
that depression contributes to a wide array of physical problems that affect everything from
your heart to your immune system? Depression doesn't just cause physical symptoms; it can
also increase your risk for - or may worsen - certain physical illnesses or conditions. In turn,
some illnesses can also trigger depression.
4. True or false:
a) Depression happens when something bad goes on in your life, such as divorce, the death of
a loved one or losing your job.
b) If you can't snap out of your depression, it means you're weak.
c) Depression means that you have something wrong with your character.
d) If you wait long enough, your depression will always go away.
e) Only suicidal people need antidepressants.
f) People who suffer from depression need medication.
g) People who are depressed can be happy sometimes.
h) Depression can go away and then come back again.
5. Debate the following quote: Depression is living in a body that fights to survive with a
mind that tries to die.
