Part 11 Description of the Cooperating School

Brief History of the Community

( Barangay Mayapyap Norte )

From the City going to Cayagan thru the Gen Luna Bridge one can go to

Mayapyap using transport vehicles for about ten minutes ride, view of church and

rice storage will be seen as you have arrived to the place.

Hundred years before this place was once a forest .Its and

kapangpangan were the first residents here. There were many fruits that grew

here ,thats why many were urged to come and pick them,Even farmers came

here to look for panaklayan and pagapang .

The first residents here were the Arenas

There was a time when a NEGRITO asked a

resident with regards to what he was picking the

latter reply with AYAP DATDY AYAP manong !

pointing at a vegetable gardens with fruits that

hanged like string beans. Not long after their other

neighbors planted the dyap in their gardens as well when someone is strangers

the place come to be known as MAAYAP or MAYAPYAP to them .

Another good legend was discovered about the origin of the name

MAYAPYAP one day there was Spaniards officer walking around the area and

asked for the name of place .The kapangpangan thought the Spaniards was

asking how they were and so he answers MAAYAP_YAP po And so the officer

ordered his subordinate to patrol the area of MAYAPYAP from then on the

name was written on the leaves of history .

Brief History of the Mayapyap National High School (MNHS)

In a 9,270 square meter lot amidst the fresh air in the newly opened Agua

Tierra subdivision is Mayapyap High School.

Like a newly-starting institution where trees are starting to grow, slowly the place

has started to be a landmark in Mayapyap Norte. Shaping into a real place of

knowledge, the school administration is as eager as its faculty, parents and

students in converting the former rice field into a conducive place of learning.

In school year 1967-1968 Mayapyap Barrio High School was opened with

Mr.Eliseo B. Carillo and Mrs. Juanita Arenas as the pioneer teacher.

Unfortunately it was closed after a year of operation due to lack of funds.

Through the efforts of the officials of Mapyapyap Sur, Mayapyap Norte and other

neighboring barangays, PTA, and DECS, Mayapyap Barrio High School was re-

opened in 1974.Mayapyap Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Trinidad Beltran

was at the same time its assistant principal. The first teacher were Mrs. Lydia R.

Rosaldo and Mr.Dalton D. Matawaran

.Some elementary school teachers served as

part-time instruction like Mrs Feliciana S.

Macapagal, Miss Erlinda Macapagal now

Mrs. Barlis and Eliseo B. Carillo. There were

two sections with a total of 100 students.

In school year 1975-76 it was called

Mayapyap Barangay high School. It was a

self-help barangay high school from 1975-

1988 where students pay tuition fees. In

1988 during the time of President Corazon

C. Aquino, Republic Act 6655 otherwise

known as An act establishing and

providing for a Free Public Education was

enacted .All secondary school in the

country were nationalized including

Mayapyap Barangay High School.

Teacher were paid by the national government .Students on the other hand, paid

no tuition fees, however they still paid authorized contributions like Boy

Scouts/Girl Scouts membership and sustaining funds drives ,Red Cross ,school

ID ,school publications and membership to school clubs. That was the time when

it was called Mayapyap High School.

Enrolment increases yearly from 100 in 1974 to 1008 in 1999.Below is the

historical enrolment for the past ten years. With the yearly increase in enrolment,

indeed the site, where the elementary and the high school were housed was

already congested. The school principal, Mrs Teresita M. Manantan almost lost

hope in looking for the possible donors of school site. Until her husband

Mr.Romeo D.Manantan ad at the same time a T.H.E teacher had a chance of

talking to Barangay Councilor Eddie M. Arenas.Councilor Arenas expressed

willingness to donate this land to be the school site while Mr.and Mrs Mariano

Arenas and Mrs.Victoria Arenas-Wegstroth donated the road-right of way.

With the authorization of the

Sangguniang Panlungsod, on July 21

1994,the late Mayor Honorato C. Perez

accepted the donation of the lot while

the road right of way on December

19,1994 .The school principal, faculty

members and the PTA, coordinated with

the Surveying Division of the City

Engineers Office as well as other offices until finally the lot was titled in the name

of Republic of the Philippines.

The first to be constructed was the administration building funded out of

the CDF of Senator Francisco Kit Tatad followed by four two-room buildings

through the efforts of the honorable Third District Congressman Pacifico Fajardo

.Many truckloads of gravel and sand were solicited from the City and Provincial

Government for the land fill of the new site.

After 23 years of sharing with the elementary school, the third and fourth

year classes moved to its new site on June 27,1997 ,followed by the first and the

second classes in February of 1998.The first graduation was held in a rashly

constructed stage where the then Senator now Hon. Vice President Gloria

Macapagal-Arroyo shared the initial five thousand pesos when she visited the

school few months of its transfer.

Mayapyap High School is Cabanatuan Citys Division Leader School

(DLS) one among the eleven DLSs in Region III .It receives facilities from DECS
Central Office and is a receipts of the DECS Modernization Program. It offers

Computer Education in the Third and Fourth Year. It is also the Division Flagship

School in Araling Panlipunan and has piloted the teaching of the history of

Cabanatuan City .

The school is proud of its faculty members who have undergone intensive

training in their field of specialization for the benefit of the students. At present

one of its teacher Mrs.Charina S.Soque is a recipient of a scholarship in Master

of Arts in teaching Music at Philippine Womens University.

It has upgraded its facilities in Technology and Home economics; Food

Management Service,Computer Education Electricity and Civil Technology.Mrs

Teresita M.Manantan requested honorable Congressman Pacifico Fajardo to

sponsor the bill converting Mayapyap High School into a full national high school

knowing that being one would mean more resources ,non-teaching personnel

and acquisition of better facilities with the

end in view of the delivery of quality

education which the youth deserves.

Several supporting documents were

submitted. Through the efforts of the

Honorable Congressman, House Bill No.

1146 was approved in June of 1999 and

was elevated to the Senate for its approval.

The Principal received a letter from

Honorable Senator Teresa Aquino-Oreta stating among others that Senate Bill

No.1146 was finally approved in its third and final reading in January 2000.

With this new and inspiring developments the academics community- the

school official, teacher, parents and the school in nearby barangays are full of

hope that the school will soon metamorphose into a more conducive learning

environment. Though, after barely two and a half years in its new site, the school

is proud to already have a perimeter fence ,a stage nine buildings where the 19

classes are housed a beautiful Science Garden ,Mathematics Gardens, Harding

Pangkasaysayan and a lot more which will not be possible if not for the support

of the parents, teacher and students and of course the DECS, and the local

government officials.

The school, in its vision to democratize access to secondary education

without of course sacrificing quality, will continue to instill into the minds and

hearts of the students the good values and the proper work attitudes needed to

face the challenges ahead, whether they pursue colleges course or be in the

world of work with the goal of becoming desirable and productive citizens of our

country following the doctrines of a good Christian.
