B.S. Community Nutrition Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

This weeks NSTP was interesting. The class were active because we were learning about First-Aid. I
had First-Aid training back when I was still in high-school but most of it I forgot already so this was a
good refresher.

Life is characterized with various accidents that first-aid training is so important. With this skill, one
can delay the worsening of a condition, save lives and even resuscitate an individual with CPR, if
necessary. With first-aid training, if an accident occurs, you would be able to attend to it right away.
First-aid training is also important in disasters. For example, a hurricane, earthquake or tornado,
immediate medical aid may be limited therefore, anyone who requires CPR or any other medical
assistance can be attended to straight away. In addition, when you know what to do in emergency
situations, you can become a valuable asset everywhere you go. For example, like in movies, when
youre in a restaurant, and a fellow diner begins choking, youll know what to do. Be somebodys hero
someday. This sounds incredible isnt it?

Furthermore, when you know first-aid training, it will help relieve the pain of the injured. Some injuries
only require very simple solution and doesnt require a trip to an emergency room. In these cases, a
person trained in first-aid is more needed. They can help reduce the pain by performing simple
procedures to help and relieve the pain.

This class was really helpful although it wasnt a formal training but some of us learned the basic first-
aid training and they encouraged us to further expand our knowledge on first-aid training.

In class we also talked about what to do during earthquakes. We learned that during this disaster, it/s
best to duck down a concrete table made out of stable concrete wood instead of glasses since
glasses are brittle and can be broken by falling debris during earthquake inducing more injuries. We
also learned the importance of carrying a whistle with you always in case of an emergency people
would know your whereabouts. Philippine is prone to earthquakes because it its within the famous
volcanic region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire and this encompasses 400+ volcanoes and is
home to over 75% of the worlds most active and dormant volcanoes.
