Guidelines
Released: 7/29/2012
Revised: 5/3/2013
Overview
This guideline replaces and supersedes any and all previous editions.
The guideline is to be used for all purchased parts shipping into all Yanfeng
Corporation Manufacturing facilities located in North America. If there is a viable and
documented business reason for a deviation from these guidelines, the purchased
part supplier must receive approval for the deviation in writing from the respective
Yanfeng USA facility.
Yanfeng USA facilities may have specific regional and local requirements that should
be considered in addition to these guidelines. In cases where the local Yanfeng USA
facility has supplemental guidelines, the more severe, most strict guideline will apply.

I: Packaging Determination Flowchart
II: Yanfeng USA Recommended Domestic Container Sizes
The purchased part supplier is responsible to insure their packaging delivers their part
to the final point of use, in a production ready and damage-free condition, assuming
normal handling in transportation, storage and in-plant movements.
Yanfeng USA facilities will provide packaging approval based off the container
selection, container size, container density, and overall design to help insure in
plant requirements are met. The purchased part supplier is responsible for the
design and development of the production packaging to fit all variants and
design levels of the sourced part and to insure the part quality is maintained to
the final point of use.
The supplier is responsible for providing adequate protection of their parts. Some
packaging systems and components may require additional protection such as
corrosion, surface abrasions, or static build-up. The use of preservatives or other
special packaging must be reviewed and concurred by the receiving Yanfeng USA
facility prior to adoption.
Whenever possible, easily recyclable and/or reusable material should be used, such
as paper corrugated, plastic containers, thermoformed plastics, etc. Certain non-
recyclable materials can be more difficult and costly to recycle or dispose of, such as
foamed plastics, and therefore should only be used when no suitable substitute is
available.
Due to material properties, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) in its natural compound state
is not to be used as a packaging material without prior written approval by the
receiving Yanfeng USA facility.
Plastic material must be labeled with the appropriate material code in accordance with
"The Society of the Plastic Industry" guidelines and/or in accordance with local and/or
national government regulations.
Metal banding must not be used unless authorized in writing by the receiving Yanfeng
USA facility.
The gross weight of containers designed for hand carrying and handling, shall not
exceed 25 pounds (weight of the product plus weight of the packaging materials), even
if palletized. Containers should be modularized to fit standard unit load shipping sizes.
Deviations will require authorization from the receiving Yanfeng USA facility, and
should be addressed as early as feasible in the packaging development process.
It is the purchase part suppliers responsibility to insure that all packaging conforms to
all government and transportation rules and regulations for the ship from location and
the ship to location.
Packaging design and part counts (pieces per container) shall not vary and containers
should always be shipped with full container quantities except when authorized by the
receiving Yanfeng USA facility and should be marked accordingly (i.e. Final Release
or Balance Out).
One container shall contain one part number only. Mixed loads are acceptable but
require written approval from the receiving Yanfeng USA facility prior to shipping
All packs must have sufficient vertical strength and stability to withstand tiered heights
to maximize in transit freight. Stretch/shrink wrap, banding, seatbelts or other
stabilizing techniques must adequately secure palletized loads. Nailing, stapling or
gluing is not an acceptable method for securing the loads.
Containers must be oriented so that they will fully utilize the length and width of the
pallet. To help insure vertical integrity containers must not overhang the edge of the
pallet
Unit load sizing should maximize shipping density and minimize the necessity for
blocking and bracing. The proposed packaging method must conform to the mode of
transportation designated by Yanfeng USA. Every effort should be made to minimize
the cost of transportation.
All expendable packaging should be paid for by the purchased part supplier through
the piece price. All returnable packaging should be 100% owned and maintained by
the purchased part supplier and funded through the piece price. Yanfeng USA retains
the right to design, develop and purchase returnable packaging for suppliers on a case
by case basis as determined by Yanfeng USA.
Transport regulations will vary for hazardous materials depending on the transportation
mode. Hazardous materials shipped to any Yanfeng USA facility must comply with all
applicable international and local regulations and be accompanied by the necessary
shipping documentation and safety data sheets.
The length and width of pallets and other unit loads are governed by the size and cube
of the transporting conveyance. The following standard pallet footprint dimensions are
compatible with both current and older trailer widths:
UNIT LOAD
Length Width
48" 45"
32" 30"
If the dimension of a part requires a pack greater than 48" in length, size the
package length to accommodate the part length, but maintain the width
dimension at 48" or 32".
Most parts are compatible with standard size containers, which will efficiently cube a
standard size pallet. The table in Attachment II reflects standard container sizes.
Unique size containers must have approval from the receiving Yanfeng USA facility.
Bulk containers should be sized to maximize cube utilization of the intended mode of
transportation. The following are examples of common bulk containers:
If the dimension of a part requires a bulk container larger than 48 length, size
the package length to accommodate the part length, but maintain the width
dimension at 48" or 32".
When determining carton size and construction, use standard size manually handled
containers. Cartons/containers are to be designed to be modular to the standard
shipping pallet. Cartons must not overhang the pallet. Parts longer than the standard
size pallets will require a container and pallet design to have one dimension to be 48
or 96.
The use of Half Slotted Container (HSCs) with common covers is strongly
recommended. One common cover over each full layer of HSCs on a pallet is the
preferred method; although in some cases, (low volume requirements) e.g., covers
may be required for each individual carton, or the use of Regular Slotted Containers
(RSCs) should be considered. HSCs use less corrugated fiberboard, and reduce
packing and unpacking labor as well as reducing personal injury and part damage for
the use of box knives, etc. The use of uncovered (uncapped) HSC, unflanged tubes
with unsecured bottom caps, and design style (custom made) containers are not
acceptable.
All containers must be constructed with an outside tab style manufacturers joint. A
stitched manufacturers joint is recommended, and will be required if a glued or other
type joint proves inadequate.
All pallet cartons over 33 in height must have a scored drop side. Although normally
on the longer side of the container, the location and size of the drop side is determined
by part orientation and operator ergonomics. The bottom of the drop side opening
must be no more than 33 from the floor.
All containers must have a box makers certificate visible on the assembled container
and display edge crush, bursting or puncture test.
Wire bound wood pallet boxes or wood and wood composite crates are not
acceptable.
Expendable container systems should be designed and engineered for use within
reasonable, foreseeable environment conditions. The receiving Yanfeng USA facility
can provide specific restrictions on time frames and expected order rates.
In order to be kept clean, some parts may require additional protection during
transportation, storage, and/or plant environment.
The internal dunnage should be designed for minimal set up, maximizing density,
loading and unloading labor, and allow for ease of recycling and/or disposal. The use
of partition or cell type dividers is generally preferred over individually wrapping parts,
to minimize labor. The use of dunnage constructed of combined and/or non-recyclable
materials (i.e., foam glued to corrugated) is difficult to separate and recycle, and is
therefore highly discouraged.
Alternatives are:
2.3.2 When selecting ESD safe packaging materials, follow Packaging Materials
Standards for ESD Sensitive Items ANSI/EIA-541-1988.
2.3.3 If VCI packaging is needed, the part supplier is responsible for selecting the
best VCI material to be used for part protection.
The general guidelines of the method in which containers must be sealed after being
filled are stated as follows.
2.4.1 Containers must be adequately sealed to ensure they do not open during
shipping or handling. Closure is generally done by taping or gluing.
2.4.2 Packaging materials containing asphalt, such as asphalt sealing tapes, must
not be used. Paper tape or strippable reinforced tape (repulpable) is the only
acceptable tape for carton closure. Plastic film tapes are only permitted if
sealing performance is compromised by using paper tapes.
2.4.3 Spot gluing is an acceptable method for carton closure. If gluing is selected,
glue transfer to the part surface is unacceptable.
Half Slotted Containers with full layer lids should be used wherever possible to
eliminate the requirements for carton closures.
To minimize manual handling; all containers must be palletized unless part volumes
and shipping releases to individual receiving plants are insufficient to complete one full
palletized layer.
Cartons are to be palletized in full layers only (no "pyramiding"), to allow tiered unit
loads in transit and storage. If carton quantities are inadequate to complete full layers,
additional cartons must be shipped empty (and marked as empty) in order to
complete a full layer.
Suppliers must size all cartons to fully utilize the length and width of the pallet.
Thus, a 45 x 48 x 5 pallet has 45 stringers, 48 deck boards and the top of the deck
is 5 above the floor.
NOTE: For a four-way entry pallet, the primary (easy entry) opening is
across the 48 width.
(By contrast, box and corrugated manufacturers standard practice is to always state
the larger dimension first)
2.6.3 Corrugated Pallets: For pallet loads weights under (500) pounds, corrugated
fiberboard pallets are recommended.
If paper fiber cores are used for load-bearing members, use no more than four with a
maximum thickness of .
2.6.4 Wood Pallets: The use of wood pallets is recommended to pack/load weights
that exceed (500) pounds.
Pallets other than corrugated or wood construction are to be reviewed and concurred
on by Yangfeng USA Packaging Engineering and the receiving plant prior to use.
1. Full telescopic
2. Regular slotted, with an inner liner, when necessary
3.2 Each 9 X 9 container must be identified with one (1) Standard Identification
Label. All cartons are to be loaded onto the wooden pallet so that their labels
are visible (faced outward), where possible.
Most parts are compatible with standard size containers, which are readily available
from several manufacturers. Some examples include plastic totes, collapsible plastic
containers, steel and wire racks. Yanfeng USA Packaging Engineering can provide a
list of recommended suppliers upon request.
Some parts may require unique or specialized packaging designs due to part
characteristics, automated handling, ergonomics, etc. Special characteristics include
part geometry, fragility, cleanliness, etc.
For any returnable material that may require outside storage UV protection and
applicable weather protection (i.e. drain holes) should be reviewed.
All returnable packaging must have the proper identification to help insure they will
be
utilized as intended. Proper Identification includes; supplier name, supplier
address, and container code.
Totes
Must have two hot stamps (see diagram below)
Hot stamps must include supplier name, city, state and container number
WHEN CONTAINERS ARE FULL WHEN CONTAINERS ARE EMPTY
Pallet Lid
Adhesive sticker (approximately 1" x 4") on all four sides of lid with proper
return to information
Vinyl ID plate in center of lid
Hot stamp includes supplier name, city, state and container number
Emergency expendable containers must emulate the size and part quantity of
the returnable container it replaces. It is EXPECTED that suppliers maintain a
sufficient quantity of emergency packaging in inventory at all times.
See section 2.0 Expendable Containers for details regarding expendable packaging
design considerations.
The part supplier is expected to conduct routine container inspections and perform
required repairs to insure container/dunnage are in a safe and useable condition and
capable of delivering a quality product. This typically involves replacement of container
dunnage, details and assemblies, replacement and/or tightening of fasteners, removal
of debris and dirt, etc. at no additional cost to Yanfeng USA.
Labeling requirements must be verified with the receiving Yanfeng USA facility.
Specific Identification requirements (e.g., labels, tags. etc.) shall be determined by the
receiving Yanfeng USA facility. Unless otherwise advised, use of bar coded shipping
labels as specified in the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), B-10 shall be
required.
The packaging and shipping label is used to identify the contents in the container being
shipped to the plant. It shall include the part number, part description, supplier name,
supplier code, quantity, engineering level change, safety item identification, date
manufactured, plant dock location, drop zone location and serial number. All part
numeric identifications shall have the bar code identifier directly below them. The
character size for the part number on the packaging label should be 0.5 inches
(12.7mm). See Attachment IV.
5.1.1 Label
The label paper shall be white in color with bold, black printing. The required label size
is 4 in. (102mm) high by 6 in. (152 mm) wide or ISO size A6. All labels must meet the
AIAG specifications for quality, reflectivity, and readability. Labels must be scannable
from the exterior of the shipping unit (not covered by banding, cardboard, or shrink
wrap.
Adhesive types can be pressure sensitive or dry gummed as long as adherence to the
packaging substrate is assured and application is wrinkle free and only for use on
expendable packaging.
The label or tag shall be attached to two adjacent sides of each individual
package/container (See AIAG B-10) exceptions may apply where there is no area on
the sides of the containers to apply the label. For unit load packaging that is stretch
wrapped the master label and mix load labels must be applied to the outside. When
individual containers are palletized and made into a unit load for mechanical handling,
the master label shall be attached to two adjacent sides of the unit load.
Label protection against moisture, weathering, abrasion, etc., may be required in harsh
environments and is encouraged wherever practical. Laminates, sprays, window
envelopes, and clear plastic pouches are examples of possible protection methods.
Care must be taken to assure that labels meet reflectivity and contrast requirements
and can be scanned with contact and non-contact devices.
A Master Label is required to be used to identify the total contents of a multiple single
pack load of the same part number. The label shall be placed on the unit load in such
a manner that when the pack is broken apart the label is discarded (e.g. attached to
the outside of the stretch wrap). For further information see AIAG B-10. See
Attachment V for sample.
A Mixed Load Label shall be used to identify a load of multiple single packs of different
parts numbers. For further information see AIAG B-10. Note: Mix loads are required
to have a Master label of each individual part applied to the shipments. The label
shall be placed on the unit load in such a manner that when the pack is broken apart
the label is discarded (e.g., attach to outside of stretch wrap or affix to the banding).
See Attachment V for sample.
6.0 TRANSPORTATION
The packaging method must conform to the mode of transportation designated by
Yanfeng USA Corporation. Every effort shall be made to minimize the cost of
transportation. This process involves routing instructions and conveyance selection, as
well as packaging design.
Failures to comply with these specifications that result in excess transportation costs
may result in charges to the supplier.
In most instances, Yanfeng USA Corporation will designate the most economical mode
of transportation, and will specify carrier and carrier's routes. If the purchase order
does not designate the mode of transportation, consult the Transportation activity at
the affected receiving facility for assistance.
When the supplier is required to determine the routing or conveyance selection, the
Material Control activity at the affected receiving facility should be contacted for
shipping information (shipping frequencies, conveyances required, etc.).
Packaging must be designed to fit within the conveyance selected. Packs should fit
snug within the internal usable space of the conveyance to eliminate need for blocking
or bracing.
Compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations must be maintained.
As with all packaging, Intercontinental Packaging must be designed to deliver and present
parts in their intended condition. Packaging must have sufficient vertical strength and
stability to withstand a maximum tiered height of the shipping conveyance while fully utilizing
the length and width of the conveyance.
In most cases the Recyclable Backup container may be used as the International
Shipping Carton (container). The supplier is responsible for the packaging design,
prototype, and purchase of all corrugated packaging.
The following carton sizes were designed for the best sea container cube utilization. It
is important if you are designing packaging for International Shipments that you stay
within the following footprints, unless your part dictates a new size.
