Question:

To what extent does globalisation have an impact on the us election?

By: Alicia Yan, Valerie Yue, Jocelyn Kwok, Herman Fung, Edmond Lai Year 10 Peace

Statement of inquiry:

Economic and social conditions impact people's perspectives on the equality, value,
and sustainability delivered by globalization.

Assessment:

Choose an aspect of globalization that interests you, research and present your
findings through a video presentation.

Research Question:

To what extent does the U.S. presidential election impact globalization?

Justification:
As we believe that the United States of America greatly influences the economy
worldwide, our group has chosen to investigate on the topic of how the 2016 U.S.
Presidential Election will have various different impact on globalization. America is one of the
worlds superpowers and their policies affects not only the American, but also the global
economy. However, both the democratic and republican party have voiced out different
concerns on globalization, which can drive the worldwide economy into two different
directions. This is why people around the world show concern towards this significant event.

Globalization impacts the world globally, as it is able to provide cheaper prices due to
cheap labor and it also has assisted in opening up markets for the United States. These
newer markets, provide an opportunity for America to sell domestic products worldwide.
Moreover, globalization has been able to do increase real-time communication abilities
between international organizations and nation, allowing a greater emphasis on international
cooperation.

As IB students who are part of the global community, it is important for us to be

aware of social issues of the world we are living in. Therefore, researching about how the
U.S. presidential election can affect globalization gives us a chance to gain deeper
understanding about the relationship between politics and economy, showing how
globalization and sustainability, and fairness and development connects to the world around
us.

Plan of Investigation

Where should I look for information?

During the research stage of this investigation, we will elicit information from reliable
sources. For example, we will be utilizing material from news reports when investigating on
the liberal bias (CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC) and conservative bias (NewsMax,
WorldNetDaily, Fox News) as well as neutral (The Wall Street Journal) of this presidential
election. These sources will be able to provide contrasting views of the election, giving
different perspectives of both the democrats and republicans.

Aside from primary sources, we will also gather relevant information through school
and public library databases. Through this type of resource, we would not be able to find
information about this 2016 election. However, to analyze and evaluate our research better,
we may find books to develop deeper knowledge about the economic and political system of
the United States. Online videos would also be beneficial, as this will allow us an opportunity
to watch documentaries and the official presidential debates. These videos will showcase
various point of views towards globalization, helping us develop our ideas on how the U.S
presidential election impacts on the globalization overall.

Where should I avoid looking for information?

Sources that we will avoid utilizing as a source of information, include Internet-based
knowledge exchange databases, such as Wikipedia, Answers.com, forums and so forth,
since these expressive platforms are easily accessible and can be edited by users all around
the world. This might result in the poor accuracy of the information majorly based on a weak
understanding of their personal opinions, therefore the information provided in these sources
may not be completely accurate, as expressive bias will create manipulation towards
information to certain sides of the presidential election.

What key words could/should I look for?

Presidential Debate
Globalization
Political globalization
United States
Effect
To what extent
Impact
Change
Economic Growth
Welfare of Citizens
Hillary Clinton
Donald Trump
Trade
Initiatives
Democrats
Republicans
Global network
International

How will I record relevant information?

We will paraphrase information that we think is useful for our investigation so that we
would understand the information more in depth. By highlighting and analyzing the most
important parts of the gathered information, this will allow us to analyze knowledge
efficiently. We will then organize our informations into different files under various sub topics,
so that the informations could all be easily accessed as a group.

How will I remember to cite my sources?

A shared document will be used amongst all our group members, that is dedicated to
documenting down used references and sources, so that if anyone has done further
research, they can place a recording of the source in the document. We will also be sure to
paraphrase our informations and also use quotations when stating others opinion, as well as
citing our sources immediately using online citing systems. It is really important for us as
learners to cite our used sources because this enables us to showcase how we have done
proper research by listing out sources we have used to obtain information.

What methods will I use to complete this investigation?

During this investigation, we will gather researched information from online and
book's references, to collect all information needed. Furthermore, we will also need to keep
an update on the election to stay alert for the most recent events. We have decided to use
both secondary as well as primary sources as by doing this we are able to view differing
viewpoints and interpretations of the situation.

Who can I look for guidance?

We can look for guidance from Mr Santella since he is our Individuals and Societies
teacher, most importantly he is American and he must have a deep understanding and
knowledge on these presidential elections, he can provide us a variety of information based
on his opinion and personal experience. Also we can seek help from the library staffs
because they are knowledgeable about the books we will need for this project. By being an
active inquirer and asking staff members for advice and guidance, this is highly important for
our group's development and successful outcome.

If a group project, what will be each members responsibilities?

Each member is responsible for doing research as well as preparing for the presentation.
Edmond Lai: Research online, Plan of Investigation, Powerpoint making
Herman Fung: Research podcast, Plan of Investigation, Powerpoint making
Valerie Yue: Research online, Plan of Investigation, Powerpoint making
Alicia Yan: Research from articles, Plan of Investigation, Powerpoint making
Jocelyn Kwok: Research in books, Plan of Investigation, Powerpoint making

What problems do I foresee? How can they be avoided/overcome?

Time Management as well as self management are two of the problems our group
foresee to be a problem during the process of this investigation, this is because we do not
have a long period of time to complete this full investigation. A factor that contributes to this
issue is how other subjects also require us to complete another task works. By having
effective Time-Management skills, our group would will be able to accomplish more with less
effort and also improve on our decision-making ability as a group.

There might also be vocabulary that we do not fully understand the correct definition
of, therefore we will make use of the dictionaries as well as thesauruses to check and
identify meanings of words. Vocabulary is extremely important to reading and correctly
comprehending the written sources of articles, webpages and so on. While researching we
are also able to better our ability of grasping the ideas delivered with the correct
understanding of vocabulary. By doing this, we ensure that we have a solid understanding of
our researched information and will not be confused or only vaguely knowledge on our
research.

Donald Trump targets globalization and free trade as job killers:News Article 1

Trump offered a series of plans designed to deal with what he called failed trade policies
Rejection of:
the Trans-Pacific Partnership with Pacific Rim nations
Re-negotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with
Canada and Mexico, withdrawing from it if necessary

globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very, very
wealthy ... but it has left millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and
heartache,"
Pursue bilateral trade agreements rather than Multinational deals like TPP and
NAFTA
He considers slapping tariffs on Chinese imports coming into the U.S.
Stepping up punishment of countries that violate trade rules

Clinton:
Theres a difference between getting tough on trade, and recklessly starting trade
wars.
Now opposes the Pacific Rim trade agreement and the other bad trade deals that
are hurting U.S. workers.
Analysts saids that Trump tends to ignore the benefits of a globalized economy,
including easier and increased movement of goods and services across borders that
leads to greater selection and cheaper prices for consumers.
Daniel W. Frenzner (Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law
and Diplomacy at Tufts University): Trump "talks about the economy only in the
language of globalization,"
Origin This piece of information is from USA TODAY, which is a well known and
internationally distributed newspaper. It is published on June 28, 2016, by
David Jackson.

Purpose The purpose of this piece of news article is that it offers the audience a
glimpse of what Donald Trumps campaign is targeting at in terms of
globalization. It gives an detailed information on how hes going to change
the globalization status of America and also give examples of the trade
policies that he has decided to renegotiate or reject.

Value This piece of information is one of the very few that provides an overall
look of Donald Trumps champaign on globalization, in addition it provides
numerous quotes from experts and specialists in the political field, which
can stimulate our thoughts on our presentation. Furthermore, this piece of
information interprets information of Hillary Clintons campaign, in-order to
illustrate a contrast of their views toward globalization, but also to prevent
bias interpretations.

Limitations The limitations of this piece of information is that it is not that updated,
since the candidates champaign may have changed by the time the
election happens, therefore some of their plans on dealing with
globalization may have some minor changes in the future.

Where They Stand on Economic Policy Issues:News Article 2

Donald Trump:
- Immigration: Border Walls-
42 million immigrants
One- fourth of them who moved illegally
Results in the consequential outcome, to reshape the countrys
demographic, social and economic landscape based from immigration
Trumps signature campaign proposal is to "build a wall along the
Mexican border and have Mexico pay for it"
He plans to change U.S. immigration policy, which will lead to the
decrease in advancement towards globalization
Work with immigrants who pay taxes, in order to be granted
citizenship
He has pledged to deport 11 million illegal immigrants in America.
Trump's disagreement with globalization was mainly supported by the
older generation of uneducated men and elderly voters in the election,
as they similarly hold a traditional view towards how to sustain and
"protect" America.
In contrast, Clinton portrays herself as a strong supporter to the rights
of immigrants
She has pledged, if elected, to create the first national office of
immigrant affairs and wishes to authorize an immigration adjustment
that would create pathways to citizenships
Supporting President Obamas executive idea to block the
deportations of four million illegal immigrants.
Clinton's point of perspective towards immigration has been greatly
supported by the modern and young generation, who has a opened-
minded conviction.
- Trade: Trade War -
He has reverted past Republican policies in the recent decades by
rejecting free trade along side with supporting the enforcements of
tariffs
The reason behind his firm belief is to decrease unfair competition to
better protect the American industry
However, various economists have made predictions on Donald
Trump's threats to raise tariffs as it might instead hurt the area of
American industry that depend on supply chains who exercise
internationally. If these raised tariffs created large impacts on the
economic growth, this might also start a potential trade war.
His firm opposition to trade deals has brought him closer to liberal
economists and Democratic lawmakers on the issue, that has also led
to clashes with the U.S. Chamber of Commercethe biggest
business lobby.

Hillary Clinton:
- Trade: TPP -
In July, Democrats decided not state any definite opposition to TPP,
when drafting the partys policy platform
In a speech from early august, Hillary Clinton has clearly stated one of
her most direct criticism towards the TPP and how she opposes this
trade policies closely followed within American, saying "I oppose it
now. Ill oppose it after the election, and Ill oppose it as president."
As secretary of state, Hillary Clinton has previously commented
regarding how she believed the Trans-Pacific Partnership to be the
set "gold standard."
However, holding this particular viewpoint, Hillary Clinton is in risk of
jeopardising support from Bernie Sanders, who was another
Democratic rival of hers, who instead ran a campaign with extremely
similar opinions on trade agreements when compared against with
Donald Trump's campaign.
Business communities and more centrist voters, who both hold a more
moderate political view will agree to the benefits of opening up to other
economies.

Origin This material is an online article published by The Wall Street Journal,
written by William Mauldin. The written is based in Washington, D.C. and
the topics he mainly covers include international economics.

Purpose The purpose from this article was to state the positions where the two
nominees for presidency stood in regards to economic issues that
concerned globalization. Both examples from the democratic as well as
republicans approach to globalization was shown alongside with factual
evidence, which showed that the unbiased intention from the writer.

Value This source is very useful towards to investigation of our project, because it
was able to provide us with numerous insights of the changes both parties
of the election are striving to make happen, if elected. From this article, we
were able to get a deeper understanding from both perspectives and how
ideas are created in both campaign, towards moving forth to two opposing
goals.

Limitations Since this article discusses ambitions of both Donald Trump and Hillary
Clinton, these two areas are only written about briefly, since a long article
would not gain the interest of readers. This means that even though a
relatively large area of globalization in relation to the 2016 presidential
debate is covered, it was not discussed about in great depth.

Donald Trump and globalization (Huffington): News Article 3

Author : Edward Goldberg

Donald Trump saw through what other politicians didnt. Showing the negative side views
of globalization to its citizens
Donald Trump attacked countries such as China, Japan and Mexico framing globalization
as a blame for the job losses in American manufacturing. However, it is more like less
people took the career of manufacturing instead of job losses.
Donald Trump also blames China for global warming and climate change from their
massive coal industry that led to the declining employment in America. Donald Trump once
said The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make
U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.
Trump uses the fear of change on its citizen and blaming it on globalization; however in
reality it is just the development of our society. Replacements and advancements in
technology is what causes the change, relying less and less on manufacturing.

seem to be biased.

Candidates and globalization (Washington):News Article 4

Author : Robert J. Samuelson

Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders are no fans of globalization
Globalization couldnt wrap around things like ethnic or religious strife, people overestimate
the power of globalization too much
People assumes that globalization gives a country a strong and stable economy
The idea of America first policies from Trump, Clinton, Sanders would just drag America
down, widening the gap for China
Even if globalization is flawed, we shouldnt underestimate it and change to protectionism.
Because it would limit trades of goods and services, affecting its international market
Just because globalization is flawed, we shouldnt abandon the whole idea

Purpose The purpose of this post is to talk about how the candidates judge and
leave the idea of globalization in their campaign. The author uses
evidence to back up his claims. It talks about the positives and negatives
of globalization and about the candidates perspective on globalization

Value This source is very valuable, because it gives us a lot of information on the
positive and negative facts on globalization, where we can look at the how
the candidates and citizen misunderstood the concept of it. Also cracking
the false claims from people and candidates about globalization.
Moreover, his use of language makes him sound like his information is
unbiased.

Limitations The limitations of this source would be that it wont contain all the facts on
globalization, since it is published in June, there is at least 4 more months
until the actual election. However, the author normally writes articles, so I
think that this is a very good article on the misunderstanding of
globalization and the ideas that were missed. This is a good source.

Description of Roles

Valerie:
As a group, we have assigned different jobs for each person, but most of them is the
same with everyone. I am responsible for filling out the action plan and the plan of
investigation, doing research and presenting our findings in the presentation. I have
researched primary sources, mostly newspaper articles, and have analysed them. I also
contributed in creating the powerpoint, I was responsible for the explanation of our research
methodology and our perspectives, I have also contributed on the other slides of the
powerpoint. During the presentation, I helped with the recording of our voices while
recording the slides and switching the slides throughout the presentation.

Herman:
Throughout this assessment, Ive been responsible for making the outline and
structure of the plan of an investigation but also helping to fill in details. Ive also been
responsible for researching primary sources as well as a few articles for supporting
arguments. Ive found a podcast and a few newspaper articles on how Globalisation affects
the US election, but also I try to find the newspaper article that has a neutral view, and this
was one of the challenges that I've faced during the research process. I also contributed in
making the powerpoint, I was responsible making the slides for both candidate's campaign
and how it relates to globalisation and comparing them. During the presentation, each of us
is responsible for presenting the slides that weve done ourselves, and while others
groupmates are presenting, I helped out on filming the presentation and I am responsible for
organising the powerpoint and switching slides throughout the presentation.

Alicia:
Concerning the main core of our investigation project, which was the research
aspect, my role was directed towards the search of useful and relevant secondary sources.
My study of secondary sources, was aimed majorly towards online news article that are
reliable, trustworthy as well as unbiased. About the creation of our groups presentation with
the demonstration of powerpoint, I made sure that the visual representation of our product
was aesthetically pleasing to the audience. As I added in background pictures of the 2016
American Presidential Election of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the American flag, this
may grasp the audiences attention and cause them to feel more engaged to our
presentation. Regarding the recording of this investigation projects powerpoint, I also took
part in assisting my group members while they presented on their responsible slides. For
example, areas this may include are voice recording, video recording and operating the
teleprompter. I helped ensure that this presenting process flowed smoothly and that there
were no hiccups, which would have resulted in time wasting.

Edmond:
Throughout this assessment, Ive been responsible for typing parts of the plans of
investigation and action plan. Ive also been responsible for researching primary sources and
the OPVL with it. The primary sources Ive found are two news articles, one is about trump
and his globalization views and the other is globalization as in the views of all the
candidates. I also contributed to the powerpoint, I was responsible for the slides about
results from research and conclusion. In the presentation, I presented the slides that Ive
done and helped out with switching the slides and recording.

Jocelyn:
During the assessment, I am responsible for doing parts of the plan of investigation
as well as the action plan. I have mainly researched some secondary information and
analysed them through the OPVL format. These research includes newspaper articles about
the perspectives of the supporters of Trump and Clinton, as well as books about the U.S.
economy and political state. I have also contributed to make the powerpoint that the slides
that I have presented and record and put together the video of the presentation.

Evaluation of Process/Product
Valerie:
Overall, I think that we have worked really well as a group, I am really happy with the
result of the product, and the quality of our presentation and research is quite good as well. I
think that we have presented our information and findings well throughout the presentation
and it was clear to the audience. As a group, we have demonstrated different ATL skills, for
example Critical Thinking skills, this was shown through our research and our presentation
as well. However there were weaknesses, I think that we did not have enough primary
resources, we could have done interviews with people who are familiar with this topic of the
US Presidential Election or even send out a survey asking students on their opinions
towards this election. We were also lacking in our Time Management Skills, we could have
planned our time better so that we would not feel so stressed out a few days before the due
date of the assessment.

Herman:
Overall I'm very proud of our groups final product, I think that both the presentation
and our research has been done in a pretty good quality. I think that our presentation is able
to give the audience an outlook of our topic clearly and effectively since weve summarised
our information into bullet points and have explained each slide individually. I think that the
major strength of our group was the research process. Throughout our research process,
weve been able to find and evaluate sources that are relevant and useful for making our
final product, I think our research has been beneficial and high quality for making our final
product clear and informational for our audiences. Our group has made use of our
communication skills and critical thinking skills to help us complete our research and
presentation. However our group do have some weaknesses, one of them was that our
research sources have too much on secondary sources and lacking on primary sources,
therefore this may affect our groups interpretations and ideas for our conclusion but also
have less information/opinion from other peoples thoughts.
Alicia:
Overall, I believe that our final product of the powerpoint presentation was effective to
deliver all main points, facts and provided an amount of information that educated our
audience well roundedly on the topic of globalization, in relation to the 2016 American
Presidential Election. A weakness that we should improve regards our time management
skills, because towards the end of our investigation project, our entire group was a little
rushed to complete each individual evaluation as well as to put together the final booklet.
Our groups demonstration of the communication ATL skills was very apparents, as we all
participated in various brainstorms and deep discussion, through this investigation project.
Another ATL skill that our group has shown collectively is the Critical Thinking skill, this is
because we were able to link all our large amounts of research back towards our
investigation question. By doing this, we have answer our original idea of this investigation
and showed the clear and concise connections between all our work.

Edmond:
Overall, I think that our final product was a success. We splitted the research equally
for everyone and everyone found a lot of good quality facts and information, which increased
our knowledge and understanding about the our topic question within the progress, we all
improved our researching, thinking and communication skills. The presentation was also
successful, I think it is informative, clear and made in good quality. It gives a good report on
the current events happening. After all, I think we all increased our awareness and concern
for global events, which made us a more international student. Im glad we didnt make a
mistake about our topic question, it was a clear and concise question that everyone was
focused and knew what to research. If not well be in big trouble. I think that our strength is
teamworking, we all had an equal share amount of work and we worked efficiently, as for not
having any conflict within our process. However, I have to note that we had a bit of problem
about time for our presentation, where some of our members nearly havent got time to finish
recording. But Im glad we got extra time in the last class to get it done. Everyone worked
very hard and tried their best in this presentation, no matter if its researching or recording
the final product. At last, I think we all improved certain skills and became a brighter, critical
thinker and a more passionate learner towards our studies.

Jocelyn:
Looking at our final product, I think that our strength is that the research we have
done is able to answer the research question that we have created and we have gained
deeper understanding and awareness of important events happening around us. Overall, I
think that the effectiveness of or product is good, since I was able to learn lots of things
about our topic and used our thinking skills to analyse and think about how this event would
affect us. However, I think that the weakness of our product is that we could have focused to
evaluate and analyse the information better through our critical thinking skills, as I think that
our answer to our research question may be a bit vague. Improving this weakness would
impact our effectiveness of the product as well as our learning.
