Flooding in Ganges River

This river passes through two countries, India and Bangladesh. The name comes from an
Indian word, gnga. The river begins in the occidental part of the Himalaya, in an Indian
place called Uttarakhand. It joints with another river called Brahmaputra. For some people
in India, this river is considered sacred. It is also a historical natural place, it is very
important for people province of India. Its median depth is of 16m down and it maximum
depth is of 30m.

This river can flood any time of the year, it can

flood more than once in a year. This is dangerous
for India and Bengal, how we know people like
there and if there is something a lot worth it can
be a bigger problem. There are tropical monsoons
(storm system known by its low pressure) around
those areas, snow from the Himalayas Mountains
melt and causes the problems. There was an
incident in 1970, it was the worst one, and it killed 500,000 people. In this cases erosion had
be another problem. Erosion can make this a bigger problem as the erosion process is very
difficult to resolve. These two countries are places where they have a lot of flora and fauna.
A flooding in these areas can be complicated as it
could damage a lot of cultivation. People work very
hard day and night for their work to be completed.
We know that flora needs water to live but when
there is an excess (flooding) the plants can get to
their limit and drown. Steep slopes from
mountains melt; one of those could come with a
big force and arrive with a big part of the country.
Dams are made to support water, if there were no dams all the water would go to the city.
Ganges River has a very big dam but that doesnt mean it could not break and cause a
disaster. India and Bangladesh are poor countries,
perhaps they decide not to perform maintenance for the
dam. Because of the poorness there could be
depression, illness and even death. In the area of Ganges
River there are not so many rainfalls. It is a less problem.
Rainfall, in this case, is dangerous because when all the
water accumulates in the river it causes the flooding,
rain could also bring contamination by acid rain. If this
situation continues like this it could bring bigger
problems for both countries, such as higher death rate, more contamination or extremely
poorness for kids and adults.
What happened?

The water of the Ganges River comes from the

Himalayas Mountain, it comes from snow or ice that
melt. There was a report in 2007 which informed
that all the snow and ice will melt in a few years. The
river had a flood. If there is no water in the river,
people cant continue their crop which means a
harder effort for their maintenance. But if it melts
quickly, all the water goes with a big force and destroy the city, it can pass the Indian dam
located almost between Bangladesh and India.

Where did it happen?

This happened in India mostly. Bangladesh

was not so affected because they are a bit
far away from the accident. Himalayas
Mountains are far away of Bangladesh.
More affected people where in Delhi and
Haridwar. Experts have already told to
people that is prohibited to live so close to
Himalayas Mountains but some people
decide to ignore the advice by living close
to them sometimes because they dont
have any other option, probably all their life is there, they continue having the idea that
they would get quicker and easier water supply for them and for their cops. This is true,
their cops would grow faster and in an easier way but they are not taking into account their
health and security.

When did it happen?

This happened at the start of the year 2007. In

January the water in the river was getting into a
higher altitude than the average. The experts
calculated that the river was growing 2cm more
in 2007, so imagine what would happened in
2030. When this problem started, a lot of
professionals, experts in the river theme, were
investigating and trying to find a solution for
this problem. Some people say that
contamination affects to this problem, which is
true, all the rubbish people throw increase the
height of the water.
Who was affected by the disaster?

People that were more affected in this

situation where people living close to the
Himalayas Mountains. This is because of the
negative aspects that affected their crops and
in some cases their cattle. Contamination was
one of the biggest problems in here because of
the number of floods which was in a lower
range in 2007. Dirty (contaminated) water was
(is) the one that damage nature including
plants. Major of plants drank that dirty water and died.
