Outcome 1.2

ORIENTATION (EAO) SURVEY

This Entrepreneurial Attitude Orientation (EAO) questionnaire consists of 21 items, each
consisting of a statement followed by a 10-point scale asking how much you agree or
disagree with the statement. Move through the survey as quickly as you can, without
thinking too much about each item. Your initial response is usually the best one.

Indicate how much you agree or disagree with each statement by circling a number
between 1 to indicate you Strongly Disagree with the statement and 10 to say you
Strongly Agree with the statement. A 5 indicates you only slightly disagree, while a 6
shows only slight agreement. Work as quickly as you can and indicate your first thought
about the issue.

Interpreting Your Results On The Entrepreneurial Attitude (EAO) Survey
To determine your assessment of the EAO survey follow the following steps:

1. Sum your score on Items 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7. Divide by 6. That is your score on the
Innovation dimension.

2. Sum your score on Items 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Divide by 5. That is your score on the
Achievement dimension.

3. Sum your score on Items 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Divide by 5. That is your score on the
Personal Control dimension.

4. Sum you score on Items 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21. Divide by 5. That is your score on the
Self-esteem dimension.

Only about 15 per cent of the people in North America can be categorized as entrepreneurs,
that is, they own and operate their own business entity, usually for profit. This puts them in
a unique class both as individuals and collectively. Entrepreneurs are different. They may
not look or act different in everyday situations, but they are different:

In the way they react to the world and their own situation, and

In the strength of their passion that compels them to action.

Entrepreneurship, however, is not some exclusive club that admits only certain people.
Entrepreneurs were not born as business owners. For the most part they did not go to
special schools or have special privileges as they were growing up. Yet somehow through
their experiences they have acquired the mindset and the passion to make it as an
entrepreneur. If you havent already acquired this attitude toward the world, you can do so
through your experience, your desire, and your commitment.

The analysis you just completed was designed and tested to measure the entrepreneurs
mindset. You now have some insight and feedback on your own Entrepreneurial Mindset
and can now compare it to entrepre- neurs who have already started and operate their own
businesses.

The EAO measures your attitude or mindset that influences your behaviour with regard to
business activities. The mindset of entrepreneurs consists of a set of attitudes that help the
entrepreneur see and react to the world differently than most other people. This set of
attitudes includes:

Innovation or creativity in business activities.

Achievement or a desire to achieve concrete results in business.

Personal Control or a desire to have personal control over your business activities.

Self-esteem or a strong sense of self-worth.

You have determined your score from the survey on each of these dimensions. You can now
compare your scores with those of a group of practicing entrepreneurs. Remember that it is
not the absolute level of your scores that is important, but the consistency of your scores
across all these dimensions.

The shaded areas on the following bars represent the typical scores on previous tests from
samples of successful student and non-student entrepreneurs.

Plot your scores and see how they compare.

DESCRIPTION OF RESULTS
If your results are within the normal range for people who have started and managed their
own businesses, this is what they tend to imply about your attitudinal profile:

INNOVATION IN BUSINESS This indicates you are capable of seeking out new ways of solving
problems and working in unique ways to achieve your business objectives.

ACHIEVEMENT This indicates a reasonable emphasis and commitment to making your
business activities lead to successful outcomes. You have realistic expectations in terms of
your business objectives and the effort necessary to accomplish these goals.

PERSONAL CONTROL This indicates you have a desire to control your business affairs that is
typical of others who manage their own business. This means you will likely exercise
appropriate levels of control of information, resources, and authority in the start-up of a
new business.

SELF-ESTEEM This indicates you generally have a level of self worth consistent with what
others who have started and managed their own business normally score.
