BAB 1

From the description that has been found in the background of the problem, the formulation
of the problem, namely: is there any correlation between the eighth grade students reading
interest and their reading ability on descriptive text at SMPN 2 Amuntai Utara.
There are several reasons behind the author chose the title of the thesis above is:
Given the importance of the interest in reading and reading ability in improving language
skills, especially English.
Given, reading is one of the keys to reaching knowledge, especially knowledge in
mastering English.
Given, writing is one of the keys to bind science, especially science in English
Significance of research that hope useful for:
Giving ideas to the societies and information to know reading potential of the tenth grade
students at SMPN 2 Amuntai Utara
Increasing writer knowledge about education especially about English reading skill.
As an information and judgment to organize education as well as English teacher to
develop students reading skill of the tenth grade at SMPN 2 Amuntai Utara.

Reading requires understanding and comprehending the means of print. To understand
the English text, in this case is descriptive, is not an easy thing to do, especially for Junior
high school students in Indonesia. It is because reading English as a foreign language is
more complicated than reading in Bahasa Indonesia as a second language. A reader must
have capacity and ability. Reader also must have something inside himself to read, such
as interest or motivation to do such kind of activity. Someone who reads a newspaper, for
example, he must have the goal to do it. It is to search information or to be entertained or
anything else. This is what is called by interest or motivation. Interest is factor that can
push or support someone to do something. In case of reading interest, Someone who has
no interest in reading will not be able to understand the text well and someone who has
an interest in reading will have a long term memory about what is being read.
