action that will be taking place at the U.S. Championships in
Sacramento this weekend.

CITIUS MAG will have some of our best bloggers onsite in

Sacramento with Paul Snyder, Ryan Sterner and Kevin Liao
providing live updates from the track, the press box and mixed

womens 100m
The team from Rio has been a little all
over place. Tori Bowie has the world
lead in the 200m. English Gardner has
been sporadic due to an early season
calf injury. And Tianna Bartoletta has
been busy flexing her long jump
muscles, but expect to see her fighting
for a spot on this years US teamas
2015s gold medalist she has the auto
bid to London. Behind these three
women are a host of collegiate athletes
that hold down 7 of the fastest 10 times
in the US this year.
Star to watch
As the world lead in the 200m, and last
years 100m Olympic Silver Medalist, its
hard not to choose Tori Bowie as this
years champion. With Gardner
struggling this season, and Bartoletta
entering the twilight of her career,
Bowie is primed to take over as the
woman to beat.
Dark horse pick
If Aleia Hobbs can tap into her early
season speed, she should have no
problem running her way onto her first
USA team. It would be quite the
turnaround considering last year she
didnt run faster than 11.35, missing out Fun Stat:
on a chance to even qualify for Rio.
Picks to make the team
Torie Bowie, Tianna Bartoletta, and
Morolake Akinosun.
Mens 100m
The mens team from Rio hasnt had a
great 2017 thus far. Gatlin has ran
three open 100m races, with his
fastest being 9.97 for 5th place at the
Pre Classic. Trayvon Bromells first
race back from achilles surgery will
likely be the first heat of the prelims
and Marvin Bracy is out recovering
from surgery with his eyes possibly on
a football career as well. This leaves a
stable of young, recentlyturnedpro
talent poised to make their first
outdoor team.
Favorite to Watch
This one should be tight, but were
going to go with Christian Coleman.
The Tennessee Volunteer turned pro
earlier this month and also owns the
world's leading 100m time in 9.82.
Dark horse pick:
Trayvon Bromell. Yes, he made the
team last year, but USAs will be his
first race since he had surgery on his
achilles back in August of 2016. We
know he has the wheels, but will he be
ready when the gun goes off? Lets
hope so.
Last year, Justin Gatlin became the
oldest man to medal in a nonrealy
sprint event at the Olympics. Perhaps
father time has finally caught up with
him, but if he makes this team it will
mark Gatlins 4th trip to a World
Championships and hes 35..
Predictions of who makes the team:
Christian Coleman, Ronnie Baker, and
Justin Gatlin.
 weird that guys run 10 meters more but ok
womens 100mh
Last year, this was the hardest team to
make. Its a phrase that was plastered
all over Eugene regarding team USA but
more specifically, it was best applied to
the womens 100m hurdles. The United
States swept the medals in Rio with
Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin
while Keni Harrison set the world record
after missing the team. The U.S. squad
could have a new look while keeping the
same dominance. Rollins is out after
missing three drug tests and being
handed down a suspension.
Star to watch
Harrison is the favorite in the event but
she already has a lane at the world
championships due to the Diamond
League Wildcard. If she only decides to
run one round, which is what she needs
to claim her spot in London. Sharika
Nelvis is just .02 seconds behind
Harrisons world leading 12.56 on the
year.
Dark horse pick
Dawn HarperNelson is a veteran in this
event and one of the last remaining
members of that old guard from the
2012 Olympics. Lolo Jones is still
training but is focused on preparing for
bobsled in the 2018 Olympics. Harper
Nelson hasnt posted the fastest of times
but in a championship setting, she can
never be counted out.
Picks to make the team
Keni Harrison (Wild Card), Sharika
Nelvis, and Jasmin Stowers.
Mens 110mh
Its going to take a lot to catch
Olympic Omar McLeod, who remains
one of the most dominant hurdlers on
the circuit. The top U.S. hurdler at the
moment is the Olympic trials
champion and former Oregon football
player Devon Allen, who is in his first
season as a pro. Aries Merritt and
Aleec Harris are the only two other
Americans in the world top 10.
Favorite to Watch
Devon Allen has run 13.11 on the
season. It was a slight surprise for him
to make the team last year but he
showed no problem against
professional and top competition and
so well pick him as the man to beat.
Dark horse pick:
Aries Merritt looks to be back in top
form since undergoing a kidney
transplant less than two years ago. He
ran 13.13 at the Prefontaine Classic
and if his body can handle the rounds
then he could make a return to the
same track where he won gold in
2012.
Fun Stat:
At last summer's Olympics, the new
core of hurdlers failed to medal and
ended the United Statess streak of
medaling in the event in every
Olympics that it has participated in.
Predictions of who makes the team:
Devon Allen and Aries Merritt could be
close for the win. Aleec Harris could
hold onto the third spot based on
times since theres a bit of a gap
between his 13.18 on the year and
Devon Williams 13.37.

All three women from Rios team, and
the 2015 Beijing team will be on the line
in Sacramento. But just like every other
sprint event, theyll be joined by some
young college talent that could threaten
to dethrone the two year reign Felix,
Francis, and Hastings have enjoyed. On
top of that, veteran Quanera Hayes is
currently sitting on the no.2 time in the
world, having already run 50.04.
Star to watch
Allyson Felix has won the last two US
titles in the 400m and is fresh off a
silver medal in Rio. We dont expect her
to give up the title easily despite some
early season struggles.
Dark horse pick
Quanera Hayes. Hayes is a former DII
standout that has enjoyed a quietly
successful career thus far. In only her
second full year as a pro, she set the
300m American Indoor Record and last
year ran sub50 for the first time in her
career.
Fun Fact
Allyson Felix won her first World
Championship medal in 2005 at the age
of 19, taking home a gold medal in the
200m.

Allyson Felix, Phyllis Francis, and
Natasha Hastings.
Mens 400m
Its safe to say that we were all pretty
shook up after watching Wade Van
Niekerk run 43.03 in Rio. Was there
anything we could witness outside of
another world record that would
impress us? Enter Fred Kerley. The
22year old A&M senior will arrive in
Sacramento with the fastest qualifying
time (this year) by more than a
second. His 43.70 broke a 25 year old
collegiate record and has run the
fastest time by an American since
2013.
Favorite to Watch
There are probably plenty of people
out there that want to see Fred
Kerleys name at the top. Hes young.
He broke the collegiate record. Hes
.05 seconds off of LaShawn Merritts
personal best. But theres a little
something called old man strength.
What does old man strength mean? It
means that no matter how much you
can bench press, if you challenge your
old man to an arm wrestling contest,
the 65year old will do everything but
flip you over the table. That old man is
LaShawn Merritt.
Dark horse pick:
Tony McQuay. Hes been a staple on
US relay teams in the past, earning
himself two WC gold medals in the
4x400 in 2013 and 2015.
Fun Stat:
Bryshon Nellum is on the declared list.
Nellum has enjoyed a world class
career as a 400m specialist, which is
made all the more impressive by the
fact that in 2009 he was the victim of
a drive by shooting.

Dalilah Muhammad is the United States
golden girl after winning last summers
gold medal in Rio. Team USA is going to
be so strong in this event since four of
the top five times on the year have been
run by Americans and Muhammad isnt
even one of them.
Star to watch
You cant count out Muhammad but
Olympic bronze medalist Ashley Spencer
has the fastest time of the year with her the second fastest time of the year
53.38. Spencer has not lost a 400meter
hurdle race on the season and downed a
loaded field at the Prefontaine Classic.
Dark horse pick
With all of the media attention that shes final. Look for him to make up for that
received for her high school accolades,
Sydney McLaughlin would appear not to
be dark horse. She does have the third Dark horse pick:
fastest time of the year with her World
Junior Record of 54.03 from a high
school meet but shes been going for
such a long time. Maybe she gets tired
on the big stage? Shell finally be
challenged by pros for the first time
since last years trials and Olympics.
Fun Fact
Sidney McLaughlin has PRed seven
times in 2017.

Ashley Spencer, Shamier Little, and
Dalilah Muhammad.
Mens 400mH
The mens 400 meter hurdles is one of
the toughest events and there is much
carnage in aftermath. Before the
season Bershawn Jackson announced
that this would be his final season.
2016 Olympic champion Kerron
Clement finds himself outside of the
world top 20 list.
Favorite to Watch
Former LSU Tiger Quincy Downing has
after running a 48.13 personal best at
the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston,
Jamaica. Last summer, he missed out
on a spot on the Olympic team
because he finished sixth in the trials
disappointment.
Johnny Dutch is still around. The
longtime hurdler has contemplated
retirement before and has suffered
many national team misses in his
career. That 49.00 seasons best from
that meet in Kingston keeps him on
the radar. Can he finally put it
together on the U.S. Championship
stage? Well find out in the coming
days.
Fun Stat:
Bershawn Jackson has been competing
in the 400meter hurdles since 2000
and his personal best of 47.30 is from
2005. He went undefeated in 13 races
at the distance from July 2005 to June
2006.
Predictions of who makes the team:
Quincy Downing, Michael Sigler, and
Eric Futch.

Mens 800
Olympic bronze medalist Clayton
Murphy has continued his hot streak
with an early season 1:43.60 and a
3:51.99 in the mile. An early exit from
the trials last year hasnt deterred
Donavan Brazier, and his 1:44.63
shows hes ready to roll. Olympians
Boris Berian and Charles Jock dont
look to be factors this year as Berian
isnt listed in entries, and Jock hasnt
returned to his Olympic form but then
again, he came out of nowhere in
2016.
Favorite to Watch
Murphy should be a senior in college
right now, instead he runs for Nike
and looks nearly unbeatable on
American soil.
Dark horse pick:
The U.S. is deep in the 800 with 14
guys running 1:45.99 or better.
Someone like Isaiah Harris, who has
worldclass sprint speed and is a hard
closer, may be the next breakout star.
Fun Stat:
Nick Symmonds was relieved to find
out a fan had scoured the USATF rule
book and found that due to his silver
medal at the 2013 World
Championship, he has automatic
entry. One last shot at making it.
Predictions of who makes the team:
Murphy is too dominant to not see him
in a U.S. uniform in London. Brazier
got his rookie woes out of the way at
the Olympic Trials and has fared well
among American competition in 2017.
Harris may find a way to sneak onto
this team.
womens 800
After a triumphant 2016, Kate Grace is
moving up and giving the 1500 meters a
go, which opens up a spot. Ajee Wilson
seems to be out of the picture after eating
some tainted beef. Chrishuna Williams
hasnt improved upon her 1:59.59 that
she ran at the Trials, but did run
2:00.41 in April. It will take that and
more to make this team. Charlene
Lipsey has emerged as the next great
talent in the event she ran 1:58.64
this spring. Brenda Martinez is looking
strong in what she says is her last year
in the 800 meters. A 1:58.78 at the
USATF Distance Classic shows shes
ready to party.
Star to watch
Brenda Martinez looks to be in top form
right now. After disappointment in 2016
at the 800 meters, shell look to go out
on top.
Dark horse pick
We havent heard much out of Laura
Roesler since her impressive career at
Oregon. She appears to be coming along
right now, and that should make her
competitors take notice.
Fun Stat:
With the National Championship on the
line, Oregons Raevyn Rogers delivered
an anchor split of 49.77 in the 4x400m,
winning the Ducks the race, and the
title. That kind of speed will come in
handy in Sacramento.
Picks to make the team
If Martinez stays clear of any stumbling
in the final 200 meters, she will be a
factor. Rogers has been on a roll and we
dont think she needs Hayward Magic to
make the team. Lipsey, too. Why not?

Mens 1500
Before the year began, a lot of the talk
was about Matthew Centrowitzs
assault on the American record but
that hasnt amounted to much since
hes been a little banged up. In the
meantime, Clayton Murphy has grown
as one of the U.S. stars in the
distance.
Favorite to Watch
Matthew Centrowitz will have all eyes
on him as he defends his U.S. title. No
one finds a better position to be in
during this race than Centrowitz but
Murphy could give him a run for his
money.
Dark horse pick:
Johnny Gregorek of the New Jersey
New York TC owns the fourthfastest
time at the distance for the year but
moves into the third position since Eric
Jenkins will focus on a longer distance.
The mustachioed look of Craig Engels
also screams blue collar even louder.
Fun Stat:
Clayton Murphy will be attempting the
double with the 800 meters and the
1,500 meters in an attempt to become
the first man to win both events since
Rick Wohlhuter, who accomplished the
feat in 1976.
Predictions of who makes the team:
Its hard to see a team without
Matthew Centrowitz in it. If the double
or heat doesnt swallow Clayton
Murphy, well have him as one of the
top two spots. Ben Blankenship is
sharp and not to be messed with. This
leaves us with one or two more spots
so well throw in Engels and Robby
Andrews, if its a kickers race again.
womens 1500
We head into another U.S. championship
with Olympic bronze medalist Jenny
Simpson and American record holder
Shannon Rowbury as the two favorites.
This is a wacky distance where anything
can happen and we saw that when
Brenda Martinez just nipped Amanda
Eccleston at the finish line of the trials.
15 American women have run under
4:09 this year.
Star to watch
Jenny Simpson. She ran 4:04.16 at the
Prefontaine Classic and finished just
behind Kate Grace but we doubt she lets
that happen again.
Dark horse pick
Grace has run the second fastest time of
the year with her 4:03.59 from the Pre
Classic. Shes a dark horse in the sense
that she focused on the 800 meters last
year and is moving up for a spot at
Worlds. If were looking for a bolder
pick, then well go for Lauren Johnson
who has run 4:05.88 on the season.
Fun Stat:
Jenny Simpson is 209 against Shannon
Rowbury at 1,500 meters.
Picks to make the team
Simpson is the favorite for the win
because you cant argue with the
hardware. The battle against Laura Muir
in London wouldnt be as fun without the
American record holder so well tab
Rowbury in there for second. Graces
improvement over the past few years
has been remarkable and making a
world championship team in the 1,500
meters will be another testament to
that.
J AG E R B O M B S
 basically taking a bath each lap
womens steeplechase
Most of the heavy hitters havent raced
a lot this outdoor season and theyve
only steepled once or twice each.
Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn
showed that shes in PB shape with her
9:07.96 at the Prefontaine Classic.
Olympian Courtney Frerichs clocked a
personal best of 9:19.09 in the same
race. Olympian Colleen Quigley and
2015 world championship team member
Stephanie Garcia have posted times that
indicate they are ready to roll, as well.
Star to watch
Coburn is the obvious favorite here with
that Olympic bronze and having almost
bested her own American Record at
Prefontaine. It will be fun to see how
she decides executes her race plan with
such an edge on the rest of the field.
Dark horse pick
Oiselles Mel Lawrence has been having
a good season by throwing up PRs
across the board and shes no newbee to Fun Stat:
the event. Its going to be hot on the Daniel Huling has made every world
track in Sacramento and shes tough. team since 2009 but has never made
an Olympic team.
Picks to make the team
Coburn this seems obvious. Frerichs
has got momentum and she races
smart. The "Quigley or Garcia" is hard to
pick. Garcias sharp right now and has
the sting of missing the Olympic team
last summer to go with it. Quigley, on
paper, isnt as sharp right now and
appeared to be a little banged up back
in May. But things like that havent
stopped Quigley from making a team
before.
Mens steeplechase
Same as the women, most of the
heavy hitters on the mens side have
only raced one or two steeples as well.
Except Jager, who hasnt raced any.
Contenders Hilary Bor, Andy Bayer,
and Stanley Kebenei has all run sub
8:20 this outdoor season.
Favorite to Watch
Jager is the obvious favorite here with
the Olympic sIlver and the American
Record. Though he hasnt raced over
water barriers recently.
Dark horse pick:
Dark horse pick isnt exactly the
respectable terminology that Cabral
deserves as an Olympian. So this is
more like my Iknowyouhadsome
interruptionsinyourtrainingthis
springbutIseeyou pick. He also
knows how to get it done. It being
making teams.
Predictions of who makes the team:
Jager Obvs. Andy Bayer has been
one spot out of making teams a few
too many times so hes got that sting
of motivation and some momentum
from a PR to mix with it. As mentioned
above, Huling knows how to run well
in hot Sacto and knows how to make
teams. But, Bor threw down a 8:11.82
at the Rome Diamond League.
 12 laps plus a half of another
Mens 5000
Looking at the entries, only five men in
my mind have a legitimate shot at the
U.S. team Paul Chelimo, Eric Jenkins,
Ryan Hill, Ben True and Hassan Mead.
Favorite to Watch
America's star in this event has to be
Rio silver medalist Paul Chelimo. I
mean, who else has such a stellar
Twitter feed AND a country music song
written about him? Chelimo had a solid
indoor season and ran decently at the
Pre Classic, where he was seventh in the
5k in 13:10.11. There's no reason to
think he's not the favorite heading into
Sacramento.
Dark horse pick:
Honestly, nobody. I see the
aforementioned five men with a real
shot of making the team Chelimo,
Jenkins, True, Hill, and Mead. I have a
hard time seeing anyone else in the mix,
especially those doubling back from the
10k run in brutal heat the night before.
Fun Stat:
Did you know Eric Jenkins is a super
duper secret rap star? No, I'm not
joking.
Predictions of who makes the team:
1. Paul Chelimo: No question.
2. Eric Jenkins: He's run some solid
doubles earlier this spring. A fresh
Jenkins should be able to make this
team.
3. Ben True: He broke the American 5k
road record in Boston in April but since
then ran poorly at Pre Classic, where he
ran just 13:28.24. No reason to think he
won't bounce back from that.
womens 5000
This race should be a strange one. As of
this writing, six of the top eight entrants
are expected to focus on events other
than the 5,000 meters. As a result, the
race might end up being a matchup
among the top runners who didn't make
the 10K team the night before.
Star to watch
Shelby Houlihan! Houlihan had a strong
indoor campaign, winning U.S. titles at
onemile and twomiles, but has raced
sparingly outdoors. However, runners in
Schumacher's camp have shown to be
able to peak at championship races
without stellar early season races. Given
her track record, there's reason to
believe Houlihan can do the same.
Dark horse pick
Natosha Rogers has had a strong
comeback season. Seen as an upand
comer back in 2012 when she won the
NCAA 10k title, Rogers suffered from
injuries and briefly left the sport. Now
she's back and is being coached by
Steve Magness. She ran 15:08.29 at
Oxy, so don't be surprised if she's in the
mix in SacTo.
Fun Stat:
Karissa Schweizer, the junior from
Missouri, won the NCAA cross country,
indoor 5k, and outdoor 5k titles. She's a
gamer and will certainly be in the mix
late in the race.
Picks to make the team
Shelby Houlihan. Marielle Hall (she ran a
solid 15:11.02 at Pre Classic) and
Natosha Rogers not just a dark horse
pick, but someone who genuinely can
make the team. Look for a PEAK
PERFORMANCE.
 LOTS OF PEOPLE RUNNING LOTS OF LAPS
Mens 10000 METER womens 10000 METER
Phrases like carnage, bloodbath, The womens race looks considerably
and too dang hot should be used deeper, with 14 women boasting an

two women to compete for the U.S. at Rio in
this event, and theyve both continued to
race competitively in the months since Rio,
placing 15th and 17th, respectively at the
Pan American Race Walking Cup this May.

Melissa Moeller. In case you hadnt noticed,
women with M's for initials do very well in
this race. It makes me a little curious about
what Marshall Mathers could accomplish in
this event if he put his mind to it. But back to
Moeller. Shes got the sixthfastest qualifying
time, in a field of 13, but shes packing the
double Ms, so anything could happen.
