Additional Mathematics Project Work 2017

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MALAYSIA

GENERAL GUIDELINES ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF

ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS PROJECT WORK 2017

Every student taking Additional Mathematics is required to carry out a project work while they
are in Form 5. This year, the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education has
prepared four tasks. Students are to choose and complete only ONE task based on their area of
interest. Upon completion of the Additional Mathematics Project Work, it is hoped that
students will gain valuable experiences and able to:

apply and adapt a variety of problem-solving strategies to solve routine and non-routine
problems;
experience classroom environments which are challenging, interesting and meaningful
and hence improve their thinking skills.
experience classroom environments where knowledge and skills are applied in
meaningful ways in solving real-life problems.
experience classroom environments where expressing ones mathematical thinking,
reasoning and communication are highly encouraged and expected.
experience classroom environments that stimulates and enhances effective learning;
acquire effective mathematical communication through oral and writing, and to use the
language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas correctly and precisely;
enhance acquisition of mathematical knowledge and skills through problem-solving in
ways that increases interest and confidence;
prepare students for the demands of their future undertakings and in workplace.
realise that mathematics is an important and powerful tool in solving real-life problems
and hence develope positive attitude towards mathematics.
train themselves not only to be independent learners but also to collaborate, to
cooperate, and to share knowledge in an engaging and healthy environment.
use technology especially the ICT appropriately and effectively.
train themselves to appreciate the intrinsic values of mathematics and to become more
creative and innovative.
realise the importance and the beauty of mathematics.

Additional Mathematics Project Work 2017

Project work can be done in groups or individually, but each student is expected to submit an
individually written report which is marked and graded by the teachers according to the rubrics
supplemented with the task. A high percentage of marks is allocated to the application of the
mathematical processes such as reasoning, making connections, communicating
mathematically, representation and using technology. Students are to realize that going through
the mathematical processes while solving the task, is as important as finding the correct
answers. Hence it is important that teachers move away from the traditional teaching and
learning and they are expected to spend some amount of time doing the following:
organizing and monitoring students, so that everyone is not only working hard towards
completing the task but working also together effectively;
brainstorming ideas to solve the tasks;
answering questions, offering suggestions and guides whenever necessary but not up to
giving the answers directly.
accessing and evaluating students process and progress along the way.
guiding students to effectively do their research including how to use the resources
effectively.
keeping students focused and interested on the task to be solved.
making the students realise that in solving the given tasks, mathematical processes are
as much crucial as finding the correct answers.
providing enough time (3 weeks) for students to complete the task.
Students are expected to work and produce an individually written report to the project work
within THREE weeks from the first day the task is being administered to them. Failure to
submit the written report will result in the students not receiving any certificate.
