Monologue

Victor climbs into his cabin and sits on the bed. He gets out Paper Magic and starts making

paper planes. He is deep in thought)

I feel so bad that I have to leave Adeline behind. She was a very nice person. She even gave

me this book, which I had relished at her father's house. But why did she give it to me?

Because I defended her? But isn't that a small thing?... I still do wonder why Aunt Jeanne

was so mean to her.

(Victor throws a paper plane towards the door. He starts making origami animals)

Aunt Jeanne probably resents her as she isn't her child. But I wonder why Uncle Joseph was

mean to her? The other day, James was telling me that Uncle's dog killed Adeline's pet duck

because he wanted to see if his dog was disciplined. Obviously not though. How about that

time I overheard Aunt talking to Uncle about how Adeline was whipped because she went

to a birthday without telling them and were planning to do worse torturous things to her. If I

went to a birthday party without telling my parents, I would be scolded a little. Why would

they do that? I wish I had done something to stop the bad treatment. But I really don't

know how to stop it.

(Victor could hear Claudine calling him. Victor starts packing up)

I wish I could make a difference. It would be heavenly if she was adopted by us, then we

would have more fun. Well, at least, she would have a better life.

(He leaves the room)
