MYP YEAR 2
Year 7 Water Polo

Water polo is a competitive water based team sport that incorporates

elements of swimming, football, basketball, ice hockey, rugby and
wrestling. (9 marks)
The diagram illustrates standard measurements for a water polo field.
With the exception of the goalie, players may not use the bottom of
the pool to shoot or pass during the game. (3 marks)

Important lines for a water polo pool:

Each game consists of 7 x 4 minute quarters. The offensive team has 35

seconds of actual playing time to take a shot at the goal, or else it loses
possession of the ball. "Shot clocks" is used to indicate the number of
seconds remaining before a team will lose possession. (5 marks)

The two-meter line (red), visible on each side of the pool, delineates the
distance from the goal. The offensive team may not pass this line unless
preceded by or accompanied by the ball. (2 marks)

The five-meter line (yellow) is a second mark visible along the side of the
pool. Should an offensive player who has possession of the ball, and is
moving towards the goal be fouled inside this line, he/she may be awarded a
penalty from the four-meter line. (2 marks)

The mid-field (white) mark indicates the center of the field of play. To start
each quarter, the ball is placed on the center line and the teams race from
their respective goal lines for possession. After a goal, the teams line up on
the center line, each in their respective sides, to restart play. (2 marks)

Please identified the following pictures of the fouls in water polo (6 marks)

1) Striking the ball with the fist (except goalie)

2) Pushing off from an opponent
3) Kicking People
4) Holding to the sides
5) Holding opponents head underwater
6) Holding the ball underwater during a tackle

Reflection -

In this Water Polo Unit, I enjoyed it a lot and find it very fun to play. This is because
the rules are just like a football game but only using hands instead of foot. If you
dont know, I am very passionate about football and I like playing in the Goalkeeper
Position. So during our water polo matches, I mainly stay in front of the goal and
play the goalkeeper position. I have developed my skills by making good saves and
showing my shooting and dribbling skills by dribbling pass players and scoring
goals. I find it quite hard to score a goal because the goal is too small and the
goalkeepers can make saves easily so Ill need to have better skills to score pass the
goalie. But above all that, I find the most challenging thing to do is stealing the ball
from others. This is because when your opponent has the ball, they pass the ball
very quickly and its hard to steal it when your floating on the water and cant reach
the ground.
I think I deserve at least a 5 for Criterion A and C because throughout the Unit I
have showed good teamwork while playing and passed the ball constantly and show
support to my teammates as well. Also I showed very good attitude while playing
and I didnt shout at my teammates when they accidentally did something wrong.
But most importantly I tried my best in every game I played, this is why our team
won every game. We felt really good about this because we all contributed in the
game and we showed a lot of good teamwork. Next time, I should focus on trying to
play in an outfield position because being in goalie and scoring a goal does not
count. To improve my shooting skills, I have to at least play in an outfield position.
