Dear Student

1 INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Mechanics of Machines III - Theory (MOM3601) offered by the Department of
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering under School of Engineering in the College of Science,
Engineering and Technology at University of South Africa (UNISA).
Please read this tutorial letter carefully because it contains some of the most important
information.
We will do our best to make your study of this module successful. You will be well on your way
to success if you start studying early in the semester and do the assignments properly.
A tutorial letter is our way of communicating with you about teaching, learning and assessment.
This tutorial letter contains important information about the scheme of work, resources and
assignments for this module. We urge you to read it carefully and to keep it at hand when
working through the study material, preparing the assignment(s), preparing for the examination
and addressing questions to your lecturers.
Please read Tutorial Letter 301 in combination with this tutorial letter as it gives you an idea of
generally important information when studying at a distance and within a particular College.
In this tutorial letter (101), you will find the assignments and assessment criteria as well as
instructions on the preparation and submission of the assignments. It also provides all the
information you need with regard to the prescribed study material and other resources and how
to obtain them. Please study this information carefully and make sure that you obtain the
prescribed material as soon as possible.
We have also included certain general and administrative information about this module.
Please study this section of the tutorial letter carefully. This can be included in Tutorial
Letter301, which is specific to each college.
Right from the start we would like to point out that you must read all the documentation you
receive during the semester immediately and carefully, as they always contain important and,
sometimes, urgent information.
Some of this tutorial matter may not be available when you register. Tutorial matter that is not
available when you register will be sent to you as soon as possible, but it will also available on
muUnisa
Please ensure that you are registered on myUnisa. This is an internet facility that helps you to
submit assignments, to have access to the Library functions, download study material, chat to
your lecturers or fellow students and participate in online discussion forums and get access to
all sorts of learning resources.
We hope that you will enjoy this module and wish you all the best!

Assessment will be done through assignments during the year and the examination by end of
the year.
8.2 Assessment plan
The year mark contributes to 20% of final mark and the examination mark contributes to
80% of the final mark

The year mark is based on all the assignment marks obtained and their contribution towards
the final mark are as shown in the table below:

ASSIGNMENT CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS

NUMBER YEAR MARK FINAL SUBJECT MARK

8.3 Assignment numbers

8.3.1 General assignment numbers
Assignments are numbered consecutively per module, starting from 01. For detailed
information and requirements as far as assignments are concerned, see My studies @

8.4 Assignment due dates

The closing dates for the submission of the assignments are:

THE CUT-OFF SUBMISSION DATES FOR THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE :

Assignment 01 15 May 2017

Assignment 02 03 August 2017

Note: The cut-off dates given here are the official, last dates on which a given assignment
may be submitted. Students must adhere to these dates only. All other dates referring to
cut-off submission dates for assignments, as may be posted on myUnisa or elsewhere,
refers to administrative dates as managed by the Assignment Department and does NOT
influence or change the above dates.

8.5 Submission of assignments

IT IS COMPULSORY TO SUBMIT ALL ASSIGNMENTS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN EXAMINATION
ENTRANCE FOR THAT YEAR. NO LATE ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
KEEP A CLEAR COPY OF ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS FOR YOUR OWN REFERENCE. THIS IS
IMPORTANT AS ASSIGNMENTS DO GET LOST.
Submissions of all assignments must be in accordance to the booklet My studies @ Unisa The booklet
My studies @ Unisa and Procedures explains how you may submit assignments electronically. Note: if
you choose to submit your assignments electronically, make sure that you have fixed your Excel or
Word files in such a way that it will print on one page wide and not spill over on to a second page. The
assignment section just prints the file, they do not check to see whether parts of a page are cut off
It is your responsibility to check whether UNISA has received your assignment. You may submit the
assignment typed or handwritten, even if you have not received the stationery, using an ordinary A4
envelope. Non-receipt of stationery will not be deemed as reason to obtain extension of time
forsubmission by due dates.

For detailed information on assignments, please refer to the my Studies @ Unisa

brochure, which you received with your study package.

To submit an assignment via myUnisa:

Go to myUnisa.
Log in with your student number and password. Select the module.
Click on assignments in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
Click on the assignment number you wish to submit.
Follow the instructions.

8.6 The assignments
There are two assignments in this module in the ADDENDUM: Assignment 01 and
Assignment 02. Assignments are seen as part of the learning material for this module. As you
do the assignment, study the reading texts, consult other resources, discuss the work with
fellow students or tutors or do research, you are actively engaged in learning. Looking at the
assessment criteria given for each assignment will help you to understand what is required of
you more clearly. In some cases, additional assessment might be available on the myUnisa site
for your module. For students attending tutorial sessions, tutors may also set additional tasks
and give feedback in class. As soon as you have received the feedback, please check your
answers. The assignments and the feedback on these assignments constitute an important part
of your learning and should help you to be better prepared for the next assignment and the
examination.

The assignments must not be written by pencil. For calculations problems, the final answer must
be rounded to three significant figures and the intermediate answers must be rounded to at least
five significant figures.

8.7 The examination

Use your my Studies @ Unisa brochure for general examination guidelines and examination
preparation guidelines.

This module is offered in a year period of 30 weeks. This means that if you are registered
for the 2016, you will write the examination in October/November 2016 and the supplementary
examination will be written in January/February 2016.

During the year, the Examination Section will provide you with information regarding the
examination in general, examination venues, examination dates and examination times.

The examination must not be written by pencil. For calculations problems, the final answer must
be rounded to three significant figures and the intermediate answers must be rounded to at least
five significant figures.

The examination is a closed book examination. The duration of the examination is 3 Hours and it is
written in English Language. Only non-programmable calculator can be used in the examination.

Question 3

A vertical internal combustion engine has a stroke of 200 mm with a connecting rode of length
400 mm and cylinder diameter of 115 mm. The reciprocating parts have a mass of 50 kg. When
the crank has rotated through 300 from the top dead centre, the steam pressure on the head of
the piston is 600 KPa and on the piston-rod side is 100 KPa.
If the crank rotates at 200 r/min, determine:
3.1 the torque on the crankshaft; (12)
