cancer survivor. Sponsored by the Hackensack University
Medical Center Foundation, the program offers breast
cancer survivors free weekly indoor professional ten-

County. According to Ms. Saslow, who has been with the
group since its beginning, it also offers monthly guest
speakers on health-related topics, and it runs weekly sup-

by its members.
Whether tennis has kept Ms. Saslow healthy and vibrant
is open to question. But in 1991, when she first was diag-
nosed with breast cancer, she was told by her doctor that
she had only three to five years to live. Yet she now lives a
happy and independent life, driving up and down the east
coast to visit family and friends. At least one of her fellow
tennis players, Linda Gould of Paramus, has described Ms.
Saslow as inspirational.

Ms. Saslow said that our coaches initially were people

thankful, at least, for that piece of good news.
As Americans await thoughtful and worthy responses
to this incident from our leaders beyond inane pro-
testations of their personal capacity for bipartisan
friendship we would do well to listen to a prayerful
voice from our not-too-distant history. On February 14,
1947 70 years ago the Rev. Peter Marshall, chaplain
of the United States Senate, opened that august bodys
daily session with words of prayer that now seem pro-
phetic in their anticipation of this past weeks tragic
events:
O Thou Great Architect of the Universe As we are
now united in our praying, so may we be united in our
working, that, as a team, we may be doing together the
will of our Father, who is not a God of any one party,
of any one nation, or of any one race. Open our eyes
that we may discern what God is doing, and our ears
that we may hear what God is saying. And then, O God,
give us all we need to take due notice and to govern
ourselves accordingly Amen.
It is especially noteworthy that the Senate chaplain
intoned these prescient words of prayer and blessing
on Valentines Day. While no one reasonably expects
congressional partisans to view political opponents
and detractors with romantic ardor, elected officials,
together with those they represent, are properly
reminded that we cannot claim to love America while
simultaneously hating Americans.

Jeremy Corbyn didnt win,

F

Corbyn, the far-left leader of
the opposition Labour Party,
didnt win it.
Most of the ridicule in the

servative party, Prime Minister
Theresa May, for her political
error. It was worthy of an Elizabethan farce calling an
election with the aim of increasing her majority, only to
end up needing the votes of a right-wing Unionist party
in Northern Ireland in order to form a government.
The scorn heaped on May by most of the British media
has been matched with the fulsome praise tossed in Cor-
byns direction. Since Labour, under his leadership, had
been tipped for electoral annihilation, the fact that he
received a respectable portion of the vote was heralded
as if hed actually won the thing.
For Labour, the last decade has mirrored its experi-
ence in the 1980s. Back then at a time when there was
no Twitter universe for left-wing activists to use to coun-
ter the invective directed at the party from right-wing
tabloid newspapers Labour, with its myriad far-left fac-
tions, became an electoral wreck.

British Jews feels left behind

Klaff again is finding herself unable to imagine
a future for her family in her country and soci-
ety because of racism.
And this time, the problem is hitting nearer to home,
said Klaff, 69, who is Jewish, a yoga teacher, and the
mother of two.
Troubled by the Labour Partys recent electoral suc-
cesses despite its perceived failure to tackle anti-Semitic
vitriol in its ranks, Klaff felt even more concerned when
London Mayor Sadiq Khan a Muslim Labour politi-
cian who reached out to the citys Jews on his first day
in office allowed hundreds of protesters to march at
an anti-Israel event carrying flags from Hezbollah, the
terrorist group.
There probably isnt a place for me here as a Jew,
Klaff, who attended an unauthorized counterprotest
against the annual Al-Quds march, said. And Im kind of
wondering wheres the place of anyone who belongs to
Western, democratic civilization.
In the Jewish media, few spoke out quite as pessimis-
tically as Klaff about the march, or about Labours per-
formance in the June 8 general elections, when the party
gained 29 seats rather than suffer the collapse anticipated
by critics of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The story of Hebrew
A look at Lewis Glinerts wonderful new book
CURT LEVIANT

L
ets say it at the outset. This book
is a gem.
Every page of The Story of
Hebrew is packed with infor-
mation about the language, from its begin-
nings through post-1948 Israel. In addition
to this longitudinal approach, Lewis Glin-
ert, a professor of Hebrew and linguistics
at Dartmouth, also approaches his subject
laterally, focusing on various lands where
Jewish or Hebrew life and culture thrived,
including early Palestine, Babylonia, North
Africa, Spain, Europe, Russia, the United
States, and Israel.
The author shows us how living under
Greek and Roman domination affected
Hebrew, and how vocabulary from those
occupiers seeped into the language. Two
examples, the first mine, the second Glin-
erts: the simple word for shoemaker in
Hebrew, sandlar, which comes from the
Latin sandalrius; and Sanhedrin, the
Jewish High Court, which stems from the
Greek synedrion.
Jews did not shy away from these for-
eign influences; their Hebrew language
embraced them.
Glinert also traces the changes in the Franz Kafka kept a notebook where he entered German/Hebrew translations.

*APR = Annual Percentage Rate. APR is accurate as of 4/16/17 and may vary based on loan amounts. Loans are
for 1-4 family New Jersey owner-occupied properties only. Rates and terms are subject to change without
notice. As an example, the 10-year loan at the stated APR would have 120 monthly payments of $9.66 per
thousand borrowed based on a 20% down payment or equity for loan amounts up to $500,000. Payments
do not include amounts for taxes and insurance premiums, if applicable. The actual payment obligation will be
greater. Property insurance is required. Other rates and terms are available. Subject to credit approval.
