2. FORMAT INTRODUCTION

2.1 The basic idea

Trendy ZULU makes primitive hobby trendy!

The classic bingo game is a well known entertainment game in Denmark but primarily targeted
at elderly people gathering in local community houses to play.

TV 2 ZULU being a very young channel a bingo programme had to have a twist that attracted
young people. However, the elderly viewers also wanted to play along and had their young
relatives printing the plates for them from the internet!

The general idea is to create a retro entertainment programme with a comedian host and invite
all viewers to play along for free.. The production should be live in order for the viewers to
play along. And we wanted to include interactive elements such as the internet and telephone
calls.

So. One host (a stand-up comedian or otherwise household name), his side kick (who looks
nothing like a host), a retro musician, a retro-inspired studio, lots of awkward prizes and bizarre
elements in front of a live studio audience.

Even though we are doing a funny programme with bizarre ideas and comedy elements we
keep our minds on taking the programme seriously and also to sell this message to the public.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 5 of 25

3. FORMAT DESCRIPTION

3.1 The program as a series

ZULU wants to invite their viewers to play Bingo every Tuesday night! It generates talk after the
programme and expectations for the coming programme. The viewers prepare themselves by
printing the sheets/plates from the internet and they gather privately or at the cafs to play.

Although targeted at a rather small audience (15-35) the show immediately became talk of the
town in Denmark!

The series is also linked together with the delivery of the main prizes which are recorded and
shown in the next programme and also by the host performing in the sketches as various
characters whom you get acquinted with during the series.

The studio

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 6 of 25

4. THE HOST

The host is already known to the public as a comedian. Jan Elhj in the Danish show was
already known from another comedy/bizarre programme on DR2. The host must not be afraid
to create his own style and must be good at improvising since the show is live. He must of
course be likeable but at the same time not be afraid to surprise with crazy or even outrageous
ideas. Due to lack of production photos (live show) when launching the show in the press the
host should be prepared to do several photo shoots.

The host has been involved on a full time basis in the preparation of the show. Both in
preparing the different ways of drawing the numbers but also in recording the sketches and the
presentation of the prizes. He has also talked to the celebrity guests beforehand and of course
prepared the acts with the side kick and the musician.

The host takes part in the editorial team.

During the show the host interacts with the photographer who focuses on the host all through
the show. The photographers hand is often visible in the picture as he grabs items (numbers,
prizes) from the hosts desk. The host calls him by name and the camera can be seen nodding
or shaking etc.

4.1 The sketches

In the Danish show the host has three different characters starring in the sketches and in the
presentation of the prizes. These sketches are planned and produced in the pre-production
period before the first broadcast. We spent up to 8 weeks preparing for each season.

Bobby the Mechanic

The host plays a very stupid mechanic when he introduces each of the used cars, that can be
won every week (apart from the top prize). He sits on each car or takes a ride in it perhaps
with a celebrity when introducing the car in the VTs.

Cozynos from Fucknos

The host plays a Greek casanova who talks dirty and visits every place in Denmark that is likely
to have beautiful young girls; a high school, a technical school for hairdressers, a beach, a
shopping street etc. These field productions are pre-arranged with any closed surroundings
and then improvised whereas they are fully improvised when going to public places such as the
beach or streets.

The Jogger
Finally the host plays a jogger, who is rather fat and who makes the most obnoxious stretch
excercises anywhere public! He keeps bumping into people and shouts move it God damn it
to everyone.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 7 of 25

After the first series the public recognised the host in his different disguises when we were
recording for the next series and that created even more fun in the recordings and made it
easier to improvise.

The number of sketches for each season was as follows:

- presentation of prizes: 1 sketch/presentation + 10 small presentations (one detailed of each

car and an overall presentation with all the cars)
- the mechanic: 10 sketches (one for each show) 3-5 minutes each
- the jogger: 10 sketches (one for each show) 3-5 minutes each
- the Greek casanova: 10 sketches (one for each show) 3-5 minutes each

The sketches were produced with only the host, a photographer and a sound technician.

4.2 The side kick

In the studio the host has a side kick which in the first two series was a rather fat, bold guy who
was very ordinary and nothing like a celebrity or good-looking host.. The side kick ping-pongs
with the host in the studio and helps out in drawing the numbers and involving the studio
audience.

He opens the closet door for the celebrity guest, he handles all the accessories and he opens
the doors in the prize-closet when the winners choose their prizes.

In the production the side kick only takes part in arranging the accessories, costumes etc. He is
not part of the editorial team.

4.3 The musician

Since the bingo game is a revival of a retro game we wanted to complete the picture by having
an old hat musician in the show! He must not look smart, he should wear a traditional outfit
and play the keyboard (electrical organ) He is not part of the editorial team but in the
production he prepares himself by arranging his involvement for tonights show with the host.

Casting of both host, side kick and the musician is very important and they must be able
to interact with each other and their characters must correspond.

In the 3rd series in Denmark we changed both the host and the side kick without great
success...

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 8 of 25

4.4 The celebrity guest star

Each week we invite a celebrity guest star to come out of the closet!

The general idea is to add glamour to the show without the celebrity really doing anything
predictable or hardly saying anything at all. Its a surplus thing just having them there and its a
surprise to the viewers that we invite celebrities who usually would be interviewed, sing a song,
do an act etc. and we dont ask them to do anything. They just sit there next to the host.

But towards the end of the show we ask them to throw something disgusting (e.g. a liver pat,
mudd, an old cheese etc) at our wheel of numbers to pull a number!

In the 3rd series we introduced yet another guest star; a well known band with a young profile
who played one song.

The host as the mechanic.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 9 of 25

5. THE STUDIO

The studio measures 400 square meters and has the following:

A stage for the host:

One chair, one desk and one rack behind the host with different small prizes (see below). On
the desk was a bag of numbers and a wheel of fortune with the weekly main prizes and the top
prize on.
One additional chair for the celebrity guest star at the desk.

A stage for the musician with one organ, one chair.

(A stage for the celebrity band) 3rd series only in DK.

A prize closet with celebrity faces on the doors.

A caf environment for approx. 50 people in the audience.

Small round tables and chairs with lamps or candles on. Beers are served before the show
starts and can be fetched during the show by the audience.

A wheel of numbers for the celebrity to pull a number.

Wide screens for the audience. Both the sketches, the prize presentations and the programme
signal is shown on the wide screens.

5.1 The audience

The studio audience (50-70 people) plays an important role in the production. They add value
to the programme as the host plays up to them during the show and they also interact as they
are used in drawing the numbers. We need a cheerful and informal atmosphere in the studio
and the audience is expected to be rather noisy and couragous! Our studio audience was aged
18 30 years.

In the first series we were casting different groups of people in society (professionals) such as
nurses vs. firemen, cheerleaders vs. soldiers, hairdresses vs. mechanics etc. The audience
would show up in their uniforms which created a good and humouros atmosphere in the studio
and enabled us to do specialised gags.

The audience are not prepared on the gags/acts. They are welcomed in the studio 30 minutes
before we go on air by an audience entertainer and beers are served in numbers! Bingo
plates and pens are handed out to the audience so they may play along in the studio. However,
there should not be any Bingos in the studio.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 10 of 25

The audience is picked up in central Copenhagen by a special ZULU Bingo bus (which serves
as a tourist bus in Copenhagen the rest of the time) and returned. The audience was queing to
get a seat in the studio during all 3 seasons.

Preparing an act before the show.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 11 of 25

6. PRIZES

The prizes in ZULU Bingo has to correspond to the feel in the show! Therefore we buy used
cars instead of brand new ones and the side prizes on the shelves/rack are items of rather
bizarre and insignificant characters

6.1 Row prizes

The row winners (2 x 1 full rows) may pick a prize from the prize-closet. These prizes are
mainly sponsored by manufacturers of DVDs, cell phones, TVs, computers, playstations etc.
However, as a start-up we budgetted with DKK 15,000 per programme (Euro 2,000).

6.2 Main and Top prizes

The used cars are bought from garages around the country or maybe on a good deal from
one garage only. Cars are extremely expensive in Denmark and therefore there is good reason
but also good ZULU-feeling in giving away used cars. The cars are fully functional. The cars
are not sponsored.

The cars can be won by winners calling in with a full plate/3 full rows the main prize of every
week/show.

The top prize has been different in each series but has been a great and unusual prize which
has caused head lines in the press!

1st series had an aeroplane, the 2nd a wooden fishing boat and the 3rd series a fully functional
fire truck. The top prizes are not sponsored.

The top prizes can be won by winners calling in with a full plate/3 full rows.

The delivery of the weekly prizes are recorded and shown in next weeks show.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 12 of 25

6.3 Small supplementary prizes

These are the side gifts which in a classic bingo game is given to the person sitting next to the
winner. In our series this was handled as follows: the week-winners of the prizes were also
given boxes of liver pate (Danish national spread) to give away to his/her neighbours! The
distribution was recorded and shown in the next programme.

Additional prizes such as cans of food, packets of flour, sauces, beer and other beverages,
porno films, condoms, cinema tickets, boots, merchandise from films or ZULU, flee markets
findings, gift tokens etc. etc. were handed out generously to the two winners calling in with 1 or
2 full rows and given to the audience when they were participating in pulling a number.

Most of these prizes are sponsored.

After a few programmes we had sponsors falling over themselves to get their products in the
programme! Both row prizes and small prizes.

The top prize during the first season: an aeroplane!

7. RULES REGARDING CONTENTS

7.1 Rules of playing

ZULU Bingo is for everyone and its free!

The plates have 15 numbers each and 3 in one sheet which can be printed from the internet.
Both the audience and the viewers play along. And the viewers may call in when they have 1
full row (2 rounds) or a full plate (last round). Each plate has a secret code which is a very
naughty description of a prostitutes attributes (taken from one of the Danish tabloids) and a
letter + figure code and the plates also has a telephone number for the winners to call.

They call in to a call center which is situated next to the studio. After the call center one winner
gets through to the studio and talk to the host. The call center takes a few minutes or seconds
to talk to the caller to establish if the caller is suitable to put on air. The host checks the code
again to entertain the viewers and the audience.

The winner gets to pick a door in the prize-closet and wins a prize such as a DVD-player, a
refrigerator, a playstation, a cell phone or a TV-set etc.. In addition to this prize they receive a
number of small prizes which the host chooses according to his mood and the availability of
prizes..!

7.2 The call center

3 phoners and 1 play official are working in the call center answering the phone calls from the
winners among the viewers. They check the code, the numbers and evaluate (by posing
questions) the winners ability to have a conversation with the host live on air. The phoners
are informed of the winner codes from the play official before the show. See section 7.3. The
phoners meet approx. 2 hours before show start.

7.3 The number system

The number system is rather advanced and may be difficult to fully comprehend in this paper.
The following is based on the rules of 90-numbers bingo:

3 rows with 5 numbers in each row

1 row full means bingo in either row
1 full plate means bingo
In ZULU Bingo we play 2 rows and one full plate.
(Appendix D)

It usually takes 68 random figures in a classic bingo game to get a full plate (of course
dependent on the number of plates you play). In our bingo show it only takes approx. 33

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 14 of 25

numbers as we know the results beforehand. We decided to pull the numbers well in advance
to achieve the following advantages:

1. We control exactly when there is a bingo in the programme as we know what plates and
how many hold a bingo.
2. We can limit the number of figures to approx. 15-20 planned figures + the random figures.
This allows more time for each sketch.
3. We can print the plates with the right codes for use in the call center, so we may become
independent of electricity breakdown or computer problems during the show.
4. We control that the 3 bingos in the programme is divided on 3 different plates to enable as
many different people to win as possible.

The solution with planned figures requires 3 different software programmes all programmed
in PHP.

7.3.1 The plate generator programme

The plate generator programme is a programme which generates random bingoplates in a

database.

These plates were created as graphic files in HTML-pages with 3 plates on each page which
facilitates easy printing from the ZULU home page. The programme is born with 400 funny
sentences - all with a sexual undertone and codes. These sentences are combined with a
short code, which enables the programme to create many different plates. (E.g.: A14 big
banana blonde goes all the way ).

We keep an eye on the number of plates printed before each broadcast and by regulating the
number of different plates we decide how many viewers have bingo.

We have made the following considerations about the winners:

1. We do not want too few; the number of annoying viewers who call in and moans or say
stupid things dominate the number of real winners.
2. We do not want too many; to avoid disappointing too many viewers who try to call in and
cannot get through on the line to the call center.
3. We wanted enough winners to avoid giving all our prizes to the nerds who uses autoplay
robots with OCR and therefore always win.

We chose to have approx. 50 different viewers calling at each bingo. E.g. if 40,000 plates are
printed from the net: 40,000/800 different plates = 50 winners.

Due to the plates being printed for free from the internet we never experienced any complaints
from callers being disappointed even if they did not win.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 15 of 25

7.3.2 The drawing programme

The drawing programme randomly chooses a draw with the following requirements:
- only one win (bingo) on each plate
- fewest numbers possible
- this gives approx. 20 figures (dependent on the number of different plates)

7.3.3 The player programme

The play official uses this programme during the broadcast/production. The player programme
makes it possible to play on all plates and shows the plates that hold the winnings. The aim is
to reveal if random numbers release an unforeseen bingo.

7.4 Drawing of the numbers

The winning numbers that are drawn by the computer system is drawn one week in advance to
avoid any breakdown or confusion on the live TV-show. After the numbers and plates have
been selected the play official of ZULU prints all the plates as a safety set.

The random drawing which takes place in the studio and consists of acts from the host, side
kick, audience and the viewers are listed in Appendix C. After the first few shows the viewers
started unprovoked to send in letters, photos, even recordings of numbers to be drawn in
the show.

7.5 Tariff and Tax authorities

According to Danish law the prizes with a value of more than DKK 200 (US 35) must be
registered to settle an additional prize VAT of 17.5% which the production company must pay.

We had one play official (from ZULU) present in the call center during every production/show to
register the prizes and the winners.

In addition we had one employee from the production company watching all the shows and
registering the prize flow. This information was cross checked with the play official and against
the budget.

8. PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The programme can be divided into 3 main parts/rounds according to the games development.

Intro: The host is seen approaching the studio outside he is always

dressed up on a bike, rollerskates, funny car etc.

In the studio: Graphics with ZULU Bingo logo on the screen and the
Bingo jingle.

The host welcomes the team around him (side kick, musician,
photographer etc) and the audience.

The main prizes (cars) are presented in a VT of 3-5 minutes.

Now the game can begin: Graphics on screen: We are playing one
row!

1st part (1 full row) 11 numbers are drawn in every round. After the 11th number there is a
break of some kind while waiting for the winner to call in via the call
center. The break is a big event of number drawing which takes some
time (see 6.4 drawing of the numbers) including the audience or
event-guests or a sketch is shown.

When there is bingo the graphics will appear on screen: BINGO and
the Bingo-jingle goes on.

The call center receives approx. 50 calls from winners and one winner
gets through to the studio, reads the code (just for the fun of it) and
gets to choose a door in the prize rack as well as being given small
prizes according to the mood of the host!

VT with jogger

The celebrity guest appears in the show (out of closet).

Afterwards the game continues: We are playing one row!

10. PRODUCTION

11.1 The team

A list of the production team is attached in Appendix A and is also presented in section 1 of this
bible.

The producer
The producer is in overall charge, being involved in every stage of the production, from the
celebrity guest selection and to the choice of the drawing of the random numbers. He or she
must liaise between the host, side kick and the rest of the editorial team.

He or she approves of the idea of the sketches and is in charge of the post production of these.

The producer liaises with the host on all aspects of the production and coordinates the ideas
meetings in which comedy angles for each programme are discussed. It is very important that
the producer has a background in comedy production/scripting so that these decisions can be
made with confidence.

The producer runs a tight organisation together with the production manager who controls all
spendings and that the show corresponds with the broadcasters ideas.

Considering the level of cheekiness and almost pornographic elements in the show, the
producer has a great responsibility in ensuring that the accepted limit for what to put on air is
not violated.

The editorial team

There is no research required in a programme like this. However it is vital that the editorial
team consists of comedians and for our part has a good understanding of the ZULU profile
in general and also of the hosts sense of humour and mission in the programme.

The host plays a major role in the editorial team. He sets the standards and he has to be able
to interact with the rest of the team in a both professional yet creative manner.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 20 of 25

11. TECHNICAL SIDE OF RECORDING SESSIONS

The technical resources is listed in the budget and production plan in the Appendix A and
section 1 in this paper.

There is no unusual use of technics in the programme, other than for a live show we made
wide use of sound effects.

The musician

12. GRAPHICS

12.1 Logo
The ZULU Bingo logo is of course available for any territory who wants to make use of the
same logo. The logo is used in the scenographic as well as on the screen numerous times
during the broadcast.

The graphics are:

- ZULU Bingo (intro)

- BINGO (after each round of numbers)
- the telephone number to call when winning
- introduction of 1 row (twice in the broadcast) and a full plate (we play 1 row! we play a full
plate!)
- in the VT of the cars/prizes: graphics are used to tell about each cars winner as the series
progresses and more and more cars have already been won.

The side kick in front of prize closet.

STV A/S 2005 Production Bible Page 22 of 25

13. EXPERIENCE WITH ZULU BINGO - 3 series

13.1 Episodes and Duration

After the first season of 10 episodes we and the broadcaster decided to let the show go on for
another season and we did not change the number of episodes.

Neither did we change the duration of the programme which was 1 commercial hour. The first
2-3 broadcasts went far beyond the 55 minutes planned, but the audience loved them..

The time of boadcast was forwarded as the programme had a broader appeal than first
anticipated.

13.3 Host and side kick

The broadcaster was totally in charge of casting and choosing the host and the side kick. Both
the host and the side kick were significant characters in the first seasons. After the first two
seasons our host chose not to continue in the show as he wanted to move on.

The choice of the new host and the side kick changed the show significantly in sense of
humour, elements and the build-up. It became more a one-man-show than an interaction
between the players in the studio.

13.4 Prizes

The prizes continued in the same standard (or lack of same?) and types as the previous
season.

The experience from the first series taught us to act independently of sponsors, i.e. we made a
budget that was independent of sponsors or choice of sponsors. This is important to the feel
and the profile of the show as we did not want to lock the host on what to say or how to
describe the prizes. However, most of the minor sponsors did not care as long as they got
their products on the show.

After the first 4-5 shows we experienced great interest from new sponsors who wanted their
products on the show, as the show soon got to be talk-of-the-town in Denmark.

13.5 Local Bingo evenings

Throughout the country cafs, schools etc. made their own local ZULU Bingo evenings. They
would put up a TV-set or even a wide screen and advertised locally with a ZULU Bingo play
together evening. They would print the plates from the internet and distribute to the guests.

This idea started in one caf in DK and shortly after TV 2 ZULU introduced a package deal to
the cafes, schools etc. with merchandise to be won or given away to the guests as well as
signs and stickers to be used for advertising.

13.6 Merchandise

TV 2 ZULU is very good at selling their programme-related products on their home page and a
lot of youngsters consider it very hip to be wearing ZULU T-shirts etc.

For ZULU Bingo we created T-shirts both with the logo on, but also with sentences from the
programme, i.e. from the sketches or something significant from the host that would be easily
recognisable.

For the show we also had special bi-cycles produced with the ZULU name on, which could be
won as row-prizes.

13.7 Editorial pre-production

For the first season the scenography and the elements and structure of the programme were
defined in the pre-production period. We spent 3 months together with TV 2 ZULU to define the
programme, the studio, hiring the editorial team + producer and preparing and producing the
sketches.

After the first season we only had to focus on the sketches, the presentation of the prizes and
the recordings of the winnings.

In each season there were recordings of the winnings of the main prizes (cars, aeroplane,
fishing boat, fire truck). These recordings were obviously made between the shows from week
to week; we followed the prize when handed over to last weeks winner of the main prize. We
saw his or her reaction when seeing the prize and this was prearranged with the winner.

The week-winner was also given liver pat (sponsored by the manufacturer) to give away to all
the neighbours. A production team followed the winner on his round to the neighbours.

13.8 Post-production

ZULU Bingo being a live show we only used post-production on the sketches. For each season
there were up to 30 sketches (3-5 minutes) to be recorded and post-produced as well as the
weekly winner (2-4 minutes).

14. ESTIMATED BUDGET

The budget differs for each season of the programme due to improvements or different choises
made by the broadcaster.

The budget is made on the assumption that we do not get sponsors for any of the prizes.

The budget is made excl. costs of host and side-kick who are both employed by the
broadcaster.

Viewer Profile
Viewer Profile

How to describe the typical ZULU Bingo viewer?

The description is based on the viewers who are heavy users of ZULU Bingo i.e. 1/3 of
the population that has seen most ZULU Bingo. All descriptions are related to the general
Danish public.

The viewers are almost equally male and female however with a small majority of men
(60%/40%).

Approx. 40% of the viewers is between 20 and 30 years and 20% is 30-40 years and they
live in rented or partly owned apartments. The typical viewer is among the modern and
individually orientated lifestyle segments.

The percentage of viewers with automatic lawnmowers is underrepresented! They spent

their time indoor with both DVD and surround sound for their TV-set.

The consumption of both rented and purchased DVD and VHS films are high among the
ZULU viewers. They often listen to music which typically is pop/rock.

The majority owns a computer/PC and they play more frequently that the rest of the
population. However not only computer games but also cross words!

When communicating they use SMS, which more than 50% does every week, and they
keep themselves updated via Text TV, which also more than 50% uses daily or almost
daily (which in fact is typical for young people). The internet is also used frequently.

The culture is very low represented, as the ZULU Bingo viewer is strongly
underrepresented among visitors to the theatre, galleries, museums etc.

The viewers must be said to put great emphasis on their dental care, as more than 50%
uses an automatic toothbrush (compared to the general population of 32%). They
frequently uses automatic shaver both ordinary and lady shaver.
