PROJECT NARRATIVE:

This project required the use of SolidWorks to create a complex item found that has an
important use in real world application. The team chose a propane camping grill to model. It is
important in engineering to be able to convey complex ideas and designs using 3D modeling.
The team learned the challenges and accomplishments that come with splitting a modeling
project among four different people. First the team took apart the propane camping grill and split
up which group member would model which piece of the grill. There were baseline regulations
that needed to be set up for all group members to follow when creating the separate parts. These
included using measurements in millimeters, working together on similar parts, and assembling
any parts necessary before going through the main assembly.
To start, each team member took the part they were responsible for and created a
SolidWorks model of the part. These varied in difficulty and size, and were split up in the most
seemingly fair way possible so that all team members were required to do the same amount of
work. The group set a deadline for when all individual parts should be finished. After each group
member was finished within this deadline the team planned a meeting to start assembling each of
our parts. This is where the team first encountered difficulties.
Even though the team used a digital caliper to make almost all measurements, there were
still problems encountered with measurements when assembling different parts together.
Because the team had previously set up guidelines for measuring these setbacks were minimal
and simple to fix. Many of these issues only took changing measurements on the original
sketches to make sure that everything matched up properly. There were parts that needed to be
modified in size or screw holes that needed to be modified slightly. It was realized that the
assemblies with moving parts could not be assembled as sub-assemblies and then added to the
main assembly. To ensure the moving parts would continue to move in the main assembly they
were brought into the main assembly part by part instead of as a sub-assembly. Other problems
the group came across were simply fixed with small edits in the original parts.
After trouble shooting and working together as a team to solve all problems, the propane
camping grill turned out to look like the grill in real life. A bill of materials, and an exploded
view is provided for someone looking to design, sell, or learn more about the grill. These items
would be vital for the manufacturing of the propane camping grill and creating an instruction
manual for said grill. Being able to know how to work with a complex 3D design problem is
crucial to working in the manufacturing industry, thus this was an important learning experience
for the team of aspiring Industrial Engineers.
