theabilitytoslipintoanalternatehyperdimensionofspaceknownasthe"Warp",whichallowed
forfasterthanlighttravelthroughourgalaxy.Earthwasadump,sowefigured"Hey,Ibetwe
canfindsomeplacebetter."Thevariousgovernmentsandcorporationsbuiltvastcolony
transportationvehicles,wewavedatearfulgoodbyetoourruinedmotherplanet,andshotoff
intotheWarp.TheWarpprovedtobeunstableinregardstobothreliabilityandtime,but
technologyismakingitbetter!MuchliketheWildWestofyeolde,mostofthegalaxywas
unchartedandunexploredwhenthecolonistssetouttofindanewhomeandmakeanamefor
themselves.CenturieshavepassedsinceourancestorsleftEarth,thousandsofsystemshave
beenimplantedwiththeseedofhumanity.Somearebetterthanothers,andthereareprobably
countlessothersthatarestillunknown:we'vebeenatthisforawhile.Boy,wasFermirightwe
havebarelymadecontactwithanyextraterrestrialintelligentbeings,andrarelyfindany
evidenceofformercivilizations.Ifintelligentaliens,or"exos"areoutthere,they'rehidingpretty
good.
Dogsareacolloquialnameforanybraveadventurerswhodaretotravelbetweenthesystems
throughtheWarpforprofit.Theydelivercargo,persons,prettymuchwhateverthey'repaidfor,
aswellassalvagewhatevertheycanfromwrecksandruins.ThechaoticnatureoftheWarp
givesnoguaranteethey'llmakeit,buttheDogs'mottois"Welltry."Andbythestarstheywill.
Dogsarethelifebloodoftradeinthegalaxy.WithoutDogsthereisnotradebetweensystems,
andmanysystemsdependonregulartradetokeeptheircoloniessurvivable.Thereisnogreat
galacticgovernment,ascommunicationisstilllimitedtothespeedoflight,unlessyouwantto
writealetterandpayaDogtodeliverit.Thelettermightgettothedestination,oritmightget
lostintheWarp,orcrashintoastar,youseewhereI'mgoingwiththis.

hazards,megadiseases,andothermenacesthatplaguethedailylifeofDogs.
