In the past few years a well-known legislator called Alfredo Olmedo caused a huge stir stating that if he won

the election he would fight and do whatever was possible in his hand so as to apply the military service. This
affirmation during his political campaign not only won supporters but caused a constant debate among the
Argentinean. Therefore, Mr. Olmedo stated, while in campaign, that the Military service should be applied
for those teenagers who did not study or work. For this reason, many people joined to this idea about
military service but there are, as well, many individual who are completely against this initiative. In the
following paragraph you will see the different advantages and disadvantages of applying the military service
again in Argentina.

One of the main advantages of applying military service is that teenagers could have the chance to continue
their education. Those individuals that for different reasons abandoned their secondary education could
enlist to the military service and finish it there. Moreover, teenagers will have the opportunity to learn
different craft such as, electricity, carpentry or plumbing. But, thats not all, while doing the military service;
teenagers who choose to become a military could do different courses in the field of engineer or
administration.

Another advantage that offers the military service is that teenagers will learn how to be disciplined and
respectful. These are one the features that need nowadays youngsters. In the military camp, teenagers will
have to follow a strict scheduled activity, for instance, get up at six oclock, do homework, study and train
hard; these activities will help to improve their habits and give them a sense of discipline. Moreover, young
individuals will learn how to treat people with respect; this habit will be reinforced with moral value and
etiquette.

One of the main disadvantages is that those youngsters who enlist to do the military service will have their
freedom limited. This is one of the principal reasons why many individuals do not want to do the military
service; it is because individuals have limited freedom in there; they have to follow and do whatever is
scheduled and there are no possibilities to do whatever they want. Apart from that, teenagers have to live
there during the week with their commanders and military mate and they have just the weekend for them
to do whatever they want inside or outside the camp.

Another relevant disadvantage of doing the military service is that there is not a clear and efficient
regulation about how to treat teenagers in there. There are many reports that show that there was criminal
violation regarding to individuals rights. Many commanders were accused for being rude or punish
teenagers in a very cruel ways, for example, insulting, humiliating or hitting them hardly up to the point to
cause the death. However, these are not the only causes that many people decide not to support the idea
of the military service since there was also evidence that many female and male teenagers suffer from
sexual harassment.

Taking everything into account, the military service proposed by the legislator Alfredo Olmedo is a very nice
initiative as it has many beneficial aspects to be considered; but, the history and different reports showed in
the last few years got dirty the military institution. However, the military service has many advantages such
as, education, discipline, respectful and many more but in order to teach youngsters these wonderful
aspects; the state or government should make strong regulation and control everything what is going on in
the military institution so as to avoid breaking individuals right.
