Course Objectives:
This course aims to impart the knowledge of graph theory in power system and to apply mathematical concepts in solving Power Flow equations problems.

Pre-requisites:
Basic Electrical Engineering, Power System-I, Power System-II, Electrical Power Generation Transmission & Distribution,

Course Contents/Syllabus:
Weightage (%)
Module I ; Load Flow Studies
Introduction; bus admittance matrix; formation of Y bus; tree graph; co tree; primitive network; bus incidence matrix; formul ation of Y 20
bus using singular transformation.
Module II : Power Flow Solutions
Approximate load flow study; Gauss-Seidel method for load flow study; algorithm and flowchart for computer application to load flow studies
using G-S method; Newton-Raphson method for load flow studies; algorithm and flow chart for computer application to load flow studies using 30
N.R. Method. Decoupled load flow studies; fast decoupled load flow; comparison between G-S and N.R. Methods; load flow study of
distribution system.
Module III : Digital Techniques in Fault Calculations
Bus impedance matrix; algorithm for formulation of Z bus; all types of modifications, Sequence Matrices, Equation for Short Circuit Studies, 20
Calculation of Line currents, Consideration of Prefault Current.
Module IV : Power System Stability
Introduction, Power Angle Curve, Mechanics of Angular Motion, Steady State Stability, Transient Stability, Equal Area Criterion and its 30
application, Factors affecting Transient stability and techniques for stability improvement.

Student Learning Outcomes:


After completing this course, students will be able to
1. Apply graph theory concepts in power system
2. Analyze load flow studies using different iterative techniques.
3. Perform short circuit studies for different faults
4. Identify and analyze different types of stability in power system
5. Apply engineering principles to design transmission lines experimentally.
6. Model Load Frequency control using MATLAB.
7. Experimentally study iterative techniques for load flow and verify the same by use of MATLAB and MiPower

1. To Simulate No-Load Test and Ferranti Effect on Transmission Line using MiPower
2. To simulate Load Test and calculate regulation, efficiency of Transmission Line using MiPower
3. To simulate the behaviour of Transmission line for LG fault using MiPower
4. To simulate behaviour of Transmission line for LL fault using MiPower
5. To simulate behaviour of Transmission line for LLG fault using MiPower
6. To study the behaviour of Transmission line for LLL fault using MiPower
7. To simulate Definite Minimum Time characteristics of over current Relay using MiPower
8. To plot characteristics of Percentage Bias Differential Relay using MiPower
9. To study Transformer Protection using Differential Relay using MiPower
10. To simulate Static VAR Compensation for improvement of efficiency, regulation and reducing losses in Transmission line using MiPower
